Our Redbacks Juniors In Action

Here's the latest reports from our Warrandyte Redbacks in action. Each week hundreds of local junior basketballers proudly wear the Redbacks uniform. This week we take a look at the U9 and U17 girls.

17.1 Girls

Under the Coaching skills of Jennet Ure this side although many ( 10 ) players have started the season very well. After getting off to a slow start in their last game, the team started to score and at the 8 min mark with a series of great steals and defensive work. Some very valuable assists saw Warrandyte catch Koonung`s 5 to zip start and soon our girls had a narrow but consistent lead. Some very effective double teaming slowed a very persistent Koonung teams rush to the basket and a half-time score of 13 to 10 saw Warrandyte in the lead. A fantastic opening in the second half had Warrandyte secure a 12 point lead with Koonung being scoreless for the first 7 mins. Significant lack of concentration on Warrandyte`s part had a very determined Koonung make a quick comeback and close the gap to 3 points. The second half of the game was action-packed with very feisty battles for possession. In the final 22 seconds it was still anyones game and Koonung were not giving up the battle. A very timely 3 pointer from Koonung drew the game but Warrandyte could not secure the win in the dying seconds. Final Score 32 to32.
It is heartening to see these girls playing as a cohesive team and this is a testimony to the team building and the Coaching skills of Jennet. She has achieved great things in a very short space of time because it is not easy to bring such a large number of players together, balancing court time and inspiring them to work as one. Point scorers for the game were Courtney 12 , Nicolette 10 , Jess 6 and Amber 4.

9.1 Girls

After coming up against the Vikings on numerous occasions, and not leaving the games very successful, last weeks games proved very challenging, and my girls rose to the occasion perfectly. After 5 weeks of training hard and improving immensely, they pulled it together and worked as a team, bringing home a spectacular win. Leading the point scoring was Amy Potter on seven points, followed closely by Phoebe Joy and Siobhán Broderick on 6 points each. The final score was 20~21. But let's not forget the other champions that played. The superstar efforts from Ellie Caruana, Nietta Curry, Kayla Bell, Sophie Cookes and Shelby Green, in both offence and defense, were the foundation of this marvelous game. The girls played a spectacular game, each putting in 100% and found out that by working together and playing as a team, they can pull through and come from four points down, to win by one.
