While most clubs run a jumper presentation or family day at the start of each season, Penshurst Panthers decided to take a different approach by combining the traditional season launch with a series of footy based fitness and skills assessments.
While the emphasis was on getting all players together and kicking off the 2012 season, the assessments will help the club to not only identify fitness and skill levels, but also to develop these important aspects of our game across all age groups.
The fitness and skills assessments included a 1200 metre time trial; kicking accuracy and kicking distance (both feet); 20 metre agility test; 20 metre sprint; and a beep test. All players from under 10s through to under 15s participated, whilst our Auskick group participated in some handball and kicking drills. Points were awarded for each assessment and the player who accumulated the most points in each age group received a prize, with a grand prize for the player who accumulated the most points overall.
A carnival atmosphere prevailed with the inclusion of a jumping castle for the mini brigade, together with popcorn, snowcones, fairy floss, the obligatory sausage sizzle and fantastic Panthers coffee.
The day culminated with a parent/player kicking competition and each player receiving their 2012 jumper.
This event provides just one example of the myriad of ways Greater Sydney Juniors clubs are kicking off the 2012 season and improving retention throughout their ranks.
