Dear AFL Newcastle Juniors,
To clarify any confusion that may arise in regards to AFL Trials, and to also greatly assist with helping your AFL players have the best opportunity to attend several trial dates, please see below an explanation of each Trial and their respective dates and please pass on to your members.
PSSA STATE CARNIVAL (Primary State Carnival for Years 5 and 6)
The State PSSA AFL Carnival will be played on 20th - 22nd MAY at Coffs Harbour. To ensure your players have a chance to make this carnival they must attend one of the following trials (depending on what type of school they attend):

In the Hunter, only students in the Maitland PSSA district need to attend the Maitland PSSA District Trial, which will be on 21st February at Maitland Park. If your child is in any other of the other Hunter Districts, then they automatically nominate for the Hunter PSSA AFL Trials - see below.
Step 2: Attend a Regional Trial. The Hunter PSSA AFL Trails are on the 11th March, at Tulkaba Park, Teralba. (not Hawkins Oval as previuosly advised). Students must obtain a nomination form from their school (most likely from the Sports Coordinator) and have school permision to attend. The above information relates to individuals winning a place to compete at AFL State Championships in the SCHOOL SYSTEM. Two other competitions that the SCHOOL SYSTEM conducts are State Knockouts:
1. TONY LOCKETT SHIELD (PRIMARY SCHOOLS - Yrs 5 & 6): During this knockout competition, schools play each other until a State 'School' Winner is determined.
2. SWANS SHIELD (SECONDARY SCHOOLS - 15yrs & Under, born 1993 or later): During this knockout competition, schools play each other until a State 'School' Winner is determined.
I hope this helps Clubs, Players and Parents clarify where their best opportunities are when determining their extra opportunities with School AFL and wish them all the best with their resepective trial days.
PLEASE NOTE: AFL Development Staff do not conduct any of the above programs but we do offer assistance to the various school sporting bodies when required. Some of the many programs we do conduct (that may be confused with the programs listed above are):
AFL NSW/ACT Development Programs:
1. Paul Kelly Cup (Yr 5 & 6): Schools compete at a local Gala Day (in Term 2) before then competing a NSW Final in Sydney.
2. Auskick Carnivals (Yr 3 & 4): Schools attend a local Gala Day (in Term 3) and are taught an Auskick Lesson before playing some modified matches.
3. Swans Cup (Secondary School Open Age - approx. U18's): This is an AFL Secondary School Competition (in Term 2) and is a round-robin tournament in which the winner moves on to a State Knockout Phase to be played in Sydney in Term 3.
Kind Regards
Glen Waide
