We’re now in the second rounds of the McDonald’s Thompson and Whelan Trophy Competitions, with one game already in the books (CGHS accounting for Avonside 116-35). There were plenty of exciting games last week, and this week has a slate of interesting matchups on tap as well.

Cashmere High school has their home openers tonight, with both teams from Ashburton coming up, while Rangiora has their home openers against Middleton Grange (at Ohoka). St. Margaret’s has a very short trip to St. Andrew’s and then St. Bede’s will play the StAC boys after them (Whelan at 5:15pm and Thompson at 7:00pm). Hillmorton also has their home opener, against the Lincoln girls (6pm) and Riccarton boys (7:30pm).

In #McDsWT single game action, the Kaiapoi girls have the cardiac winners from last week, Burnside, coming to play at 5pm, and Rangi Ruru hosts the Ellesmere girls at 5:15pm. On the Thompson side, Shirley’s home opener is against Christ’s College, and St. Thomas has Papanui (also at 5:15pm). After a tense, but ultimately successful Dowson Cup Defence last Tuesday, CBHS hosts Burnside at 6:15pm, in what is expected to be another tight game with the Dowson Cup up for grabs. 7pm sees Hornby’s 2017 home opener against Ellesmere, and Linwood doing the same with a visiting Lincoln team.

Kaiapoi is scheduled to play at Cathedral this Thursday night.
