Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Otago community for the loss of basketball legend John Paul (pictured second from left), who has left us after passing his love of the game to generations of hoopsters.
Premier Championship
No Men’s and Women’s Premier grade and U23 club basketball played on Saturday
Men’s Under 20
With Canterbury teams at the Under 23 National championships no Premier and Under 23 club basketball was held, so all eyes became focused on the final pool games in the tough 16 team Men’s Under 20 and 12 team Boys Under 17 competitions.
The defending Under 20 champion Burnside High was desperate to get its team back functioning well with Secondary School Premierships (Qualifying) looming shortly, an improved effort from Christchurch Boys High saw them almost upset Burnside. Burnside had to come from behind to force extra-time 60-60 when all looked lost. With Ryan Jones and Remy Tamagushiku splashing triple pointers for Boys High as the clock ran down it was Kyle Louis that coolly slotted a basket for Burnside and moments later a free throw but missed with the other two to save the game for Burnside.
In the extra-time that followed, Burnside started strongly before Boys High rallied again but it finally took a last gasp shot from Oliver Fairbrother to clinch victory 70-68 for Burnside, the officials having to double check with the scorebench to ensure the shot had left the hands before the hooter sounded, it was that close.
This left the unbeaten Middleton Grange Gators as top qualifier and a quarter-final match up against Wolverines whereas St Andrews had jumped to seventh place and a quarter-final against Burnside.
The ever-inproving St Andrews College caused a change in the pecking order for this week’s quarter-finals when it upset second placed but depleted North Canterbury 85-80.
Burnside escapes in overtime beating Boys High 70-68
Coach Joe Hammond sent in his report
With our New Zealand player, Shou Nisbett, away for his NZ team training camp in Auckland the heart and soul of the Burnside basketball spirit was shown as two of our key players, played through injury and showed a toughness which is unusual for high school players. Jahnim and Kyle you were both warriors and played through so much pain it's crazy. This win at the buzzer in overtime showed our spirit which is to do our best for every second of the game no matter what. To be able to coach this group is a privilege and I'm so impressed with them all. Oliver nailed the buzzer beater, a Tim Duncan bank shot from mid-range. Yeah buddy! Boys high are so well coached its impressive to watch.
St Andrews stumps North Canterbury 85-80
Liam Connelly sent in his report on the match
The North Canterbury under 20 men’s Basketball team went up against St Andrews College on Saturday in a close encounter that saw several lead changes throughout the match. The absence of key big men Lawson Morris-Whyte and Jarrod Satherley was evident from the start and St Andrews big man Nick Symon (19) often finished low or got easy points from the free throw line. North still held a two point lead at the half (30-28) however, primarily through the efforts of Jordan De Winter (30) that started strong for North, hitting baskets both from strong drives and accurate shooting from beyond the 3 point arc. Liam Connelly (27) took control through the third quarter, and was able to finish inside through good penetrating play. But youngster Jayden Chan (29) was the real killer for St Andrews barely missing a shot through the second half and hitting continuous outside shots down the stretch. De Winter hit a couple of key 3’s late in the game but it wasn’t enough, St Andrews walking away with the victory 85-80. With pool play now over, North Canterbury will face Christchurch Boys high in the quarter finals (4v5) next week in what is sure to be a great match.
STAC 85 North Canterbury 80 Richard Kenny sent in these reports, thanks Richard
With Rangiora and Cashmere playing across town and Burnside earlier beating Boys High there was a lot on the line for both teams. For North the chance to secure 3rd spot or fall potentially to 5th spot and for STAC the chance to punch their ticket into next week’s quarter finals or face the possibility of slipping out of the Top 8 if Rangiora were to be successful. It had the makings of a tight finals-like contest and so it would prove as not much could separate the teams for the first 20 minutes with North taking a slender 2 point lead into the main break. In the 3rd quarter the STAC brigade started slowly gaining an edge stepping up their defensive pressure and turning a 2 point deficit into an 8 point lead at ¾ time, with Jayden Chan scoring 12 of his 29 points either side of the break. That burst gave STAC a 10 point lead early in the 4th term which was followed by both sides trading baskets before STAC calmly slotted 7 free throws in the dying minutes to ice the game and book their place in the quarter finals. Jayden Chan was well supported by Nick Symon (19 points) and Zac De Roo (17) whilst Jordan De Winter (30 points including the last 3 pointer of the game) and Liam Connelly (26 points) fought long and hard for North in a losing effort.
Wolverines 84 Christ’s College 35
A solid 2nd quarter and dominant 3rd quarter (31-8) cleared the way for the Wolverines to cement 7th spot on the ladder. Scoring for the Wolverines was spread around as 5 players hit double figures led by Chris Johnson with 18 and Hayden Murphy with 16. Christs continued to plug away courageously against the odds with harry beadle, Lois Mann and Nic Crenshaw striving hard.
Cashmere crushes Rangiora High 103-53
Cashmere’s Coach Ben Sheat sent in his report
We started to find some consistent effort from all players and took another good step towards South Islands. We started well although Rangiora came fighting back finishing the first quarter 24-16. Then we pushed the tempo managing to pull away in the 2nd and 3rd. Most players came to play with 4 starters getting into double figures George Love 18 points 14 rebounds, Kyle Tikao 26 points, Joemer Altabano 17 points, Alex Irvine 10 points 7 rebounds 7 assists. Gainlorenzo Gai our Italian exchange student played his last game for us before he heads home to start his own season. He finished with a near Quad double 19 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds and 7 steals.
Riley Block continued to lead the Rangiora response with another energetic display but he lacked support while RHS coach, Peter Buckley was disappointed at the team’s fitness to stay with the busy pace set by Cashmere.
St Bedes 95 Aranui Academy 62
St Bedes took the opportunity to test out a number of its moves against Aranui Academy and a tight game followed for much of the first half. Bedes took a handy 37-28 lead at the break. Teenage representative Jaiden-Lee Manera showed some of his advanced skill slotting a high 27 points for St Bedes while Ben hood, Reid Gibbens and Lauchie Weston all kept the score ticking over. Hayden Lee was the anchorman of the Aranui challenge.
Middleton remains unbeaten downing Pioneer 96-47.
Top dog Middleton Gators raced to a handy 24-8 lead through the efforts of Regan Burnett, Ihaka Pink and Zach Lilburne while Ash Adamson kept the momentum rolling in the second spell. Pioneer looked to Karesse Lavery as their go to man who responded with 21 points. With a championship goal set firmly in their sights and an easier 1 v 8 quarter final match-up against the unpredictable Wolverines then their focus will start to shift to the AA Secondary school Premierships in Nelson starting on Wednesday 3rd September.
Papanui High thumps a weakened Gators 62-39.
Gators and Papanui went toe-to-toe in the first half with Gators taking a narrow 23-21 lead at the half-time break but mounting pressure from the fast running Papanui side against Gators who only could field six players through injury, saw Papanui applying the pressure an gaps soon opened in the tiring Gators defence. Taylor Britt turned power into points as he clocked up 24 points while Carl Isitt and U17 player Benji Gray added valuable contributions about the court. Cole Jefferies and Cyrus Eade kept Gators score slowly turning over.
Lincoln welcomes back James Cawthorn and thumps Shirley 82-39
James Cawthorn got quickly into his stride after an injury lay-off at the Breakers trials hitting three trebles and a basket. Backed up by Stu Erskine and Sam Riley Lincoln scored with regular momentum and by half-time was ahead 55-17. Lincoln maintained a reasonable tight defence making it difficult for the Shirley pack to break through but they kept on trying with Connor Page and Steve Chambers managing to break the defence.

Boy’s Under 17
In the final round of the Top six section of the Under 17 competition the defending champion Burnside White was upset by arch-rival Middleton Grange Green 76-70, Burnside’s first loss this season. Middleton now meets Boys High in the semi’s on September 14th while Burnside meets Shirley Spartens in the 2v3.

Richard Kenny sent in these reports, thanks Richard, Bruce adding a few extra comments
Middleton Green upsets Burnside White 76-70
In this top of the table clash, Burnside were playing to keep their undefeated season alive whilst Middleton seemed to be playing for bragging rights ahead of the finals series. For 3½ quarters nothing could separate the teams, then seemingly out of nowhere, Middleton became red hot hitting 17 points in the space of a few minutes to blow the game apart. Despite a late rally from Burnside, it couldn’t complete the comeback as Middleton handed out Burnside’s first loss of the season by six points. Han Gi Jeong led the way for Burnside with 21 points (13 from the free throw line) whilst for Middleton, Sam Lees ran hot early, scoring 17 of his 19 points in the first-half. After the break Jaden Janssen, Barclay Miller (12) and Sam Riley (12) would carry the load with 27 of Middleton’s 43 second-half points between them.
Bruce takes up the story
Three telling triple pointers in the final quarter to MGG’s Mathew Mischewski (11) told heavily on Burnside with Gi Jeong slotting a basket and six free throws to keep Burnside in with a chance. Earlier Kazuki Tsukiji (23), who had played a key role in the Burnside U20 OT win, contributed much to Burnside’s efforts in the middle stages while Oliver Fairbrother had left all his energy in the U20 game and was contained by tight Middleton defence.
Shirley 97 Burnside Green 36
Shirley showed too much class for Burnside Green winning 97-36 as it secured 3rd spot in the top 6 and a semi-final against Burnside White in a few weeks. Simon Fairbrother’s Green team meanwhile will now be looking to next year for further development.
Tom Christie showed that he had some strong ball skills slotting 22 points for Shirley while Patrick Roger (20), Ollie Lidstone (15) and Jake Simson made their regular contributions.
Lewis Baker-McMillan continued to shine for Burnside with support from Toby Gillooly.
Boys High edges STAC 66-63
After a tight 1st half, Boys High established themselves in the 3rd period and pulled away to a 10 point lead at ¾ time before holding on in the end by 3 points against a desperate STAC team. The win lets Boys High into the semi-finals where they will take on Middleton (1 v 4) in what could be an interesting semi-final given how Middleton has stumbled at the semis in recent seasons. As far as the main contributors to this game, Boys High would be led by Quinn Clinton (21 points) and Jack Ansell (14 points) whilst STAC had the services of Jayden Chan (17 points backing up from his 29 points the game before) and Sam Martel (14 points) and Theo Van Hout (9) keeping them in the game.
BOTTOM SIX
Papanui 96 Christ’s College 47
Papanui were just too tall and too classy for Christ’s College despite what seemed to be a never say die approach from the latter. Carl Isitt, son of former Tallblack Paul, splashed in 36 points with a gritty effort, rebounding strongly and driving to the hoop. Lachlan Stark (16) led Christs College by example, running hard and strong to the end.
Lincoln 64 Middleton White 59
A narrow win for Lincoln (64-59) to push them to 4th in the Bottom 6 round robin.
Lewis Seo again stood out for Middleton White with support from Timothy Barnes while the scoring for the Lincoln fill in team was led by Karesse Lavery. The match was close throughout with Lincoln ahead 31-29 at the turnaround, 44-40 at the last break and Middleton did all it could to go out in a winning mode but Lincoln held firm.
St Bedes 62 Cashmere Gold 56
In what was a very closely contested game, St. Bedes would hold onto win by six points and forcing a 3-way tie with Papanui & Cashmere at the top of the Bottom 6 ladder. Jesse Campbell featured all around the court for Cashmere, slotting 21 points for Gold as well as setting up many of Cashmere’s moves. Jaiden-Lee Manera showed of his rep skills with a good 18 points on top of his effort with Bedes U20 side earlier in the day.
Papanui topped the Bottom six pool on goal average ahead of Cashmere, then St Bedes in third place.
Scorers were:
Top 6:Middleton Grange Green 76 (Sam Lees 17, Sam Riley 12, Barcaly Miller 12, Mathew Mischewski 11) Burnside White 70 (Kazuki Tsukiji 23, Han Gil Jeong 22, Blake Alps 13), Shirley Spartens 97 (Tom Christie 22, Patrick Rogers 20, Ollie Lidstone 15, Jake Simpson 12) Burnside Green 36 (Lewis Baker-McMillen 13, Toby Gillooly 12), Christchurch BHS 66 (Quinn Clinton 22, Jack Ansell 14, Michael Knopick 10) St Andrews Coll 63 (Jayden Chan 17, Sam Martel 12).

Wolverines repulse Atami comeback to win 59-55
Master coach Jamie Graham sent in his report
The Div 1 boys got off to a dominating display in the first half as they outclassed Atami to lead 37 - 23 at half time. The 3rd Quarter was a lot more even but the Wolves still kept a handy 15pt lead going into the final quarter.
Unfortunately everything went wrong in the 4th and Atami started to pile on the pressure as poor execution from the Wolfpack led to easy baskets for Atami and with less than 30sec to go, Atami had closed the gap to three and with ball in hand looked to tie the game. But the one thing that was going well for the Wolves was their defence as they pinched the inbound pass leaving Atami no option but to foul. One of two free throws sealed the victory for the boys, finally winning 59 - 55.
Paul Havill was the only Wolverine to hit double figures with 17pts but notable mention to Todd Blake who proved to be a handful for Atami and Nick Purcell (9pts) who was a beast on the boards.
It was a yet another great team effort with all 9 members contributing on the score board. The boys look towards next week as they take on the defending champs Placemakers Wolves.
In other matches, defending champion Placemakers Wolves edged out arch-rival University in another tight tussle – winning in overtime while Checkers caused a minor upset, edging past HSOB 86-81.
Placemakers and Wolverines share the lead in the Top four round unbeaten followed closely by Atami. University have yet to record a win.
Bottom Four
North Canterbury produced some of its best teamwork as it drubbed Gators 77-54 in the early game. Led by Angus Gourlay, the NCJBA Development officer Angus Gourlay, North Canterbury piled on the points and pressure with Reilly Price and Jamie Carlson in on the action. Big man Trevor Brown put up a strong display on the boards, having a great game down low. Sam Sherwood and Luke Smith-Williams kept Gators in touch.
Pioneer Yellow outsmarted fellow side Pioneer Blue 65-58 in the other match.
Pioneer Yellow topped the pool and will meet Gators in a bottom four semi-final this Sunday while North Canterbury clashes with Pioneer Blue in the other.
Scorers were:
Top six: Placemakers 77 University 67, Wolverines 59 (Paul Havill 17) Atami 55 (Jamie Fitzsimmons 14, Ivan Hill 12), Checkers 86 HSOB 81.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
