Herald on Sunday Sideline Champs Award 2013

 

Canterbury Basketball Association is thrilled to be involved in the new Sideline Champs Awards 2013, celebrating the best grassroots sports fans around New Zealand.

This week’s sideline champs award went to

Ray Hastie  Taxi for shuffling his daughters around basketball including NZ Junior rep Kendal Hastie playing for University and a development player in the Canterbury Wildcats and ready supplier of a family scorebench team for many years.

Bert and Di Knops, the long-term driving force behind the Aranui Academy side week in and week out for over a decade, Diane can be seen every Saturday, tape recorder in hand to record all the good and bad moves for Bert to talk further about at training

The SKYCITY Breakers are opening their doors to young players eager to secure development player spots available for the 2013/14 Australian National Basketball League, as the club scours the Bartercard National League and the basketball community for the next generation of emerging talent.

The club is renowned for fostering young talent, with a number of stars on the current roster having come through the pathway of academy and development categories before securing fulltime playing contracts with the three-time champions. It is this New Zealand based pathway that is increasingly offering players a way into the professional game without having to leave home.

The list of players who have made their way through the club’s Player Development Pathway is impressive, including Tom Abercrombie, Isaac Fotu, Tai Webster, Michael Fitchett, Hayden Allen, Everard Bartlett, Josh Bloxham, Corey Webster, BJ Anthony, Alex Pledger, Lindsay Tait, and current Tall Blacks captain Mika Vukona.

Prospective development players are invited to apply for a try out at the club’s Atlas Place headquarters in early August. Applications are open to any players that meet the initial criteria, the primary one being aged between 17 and 24 and that those chosen are available for all SKYCITY Breakers commitments throughout the season.

Breakers Academy Head Coach Judd Flavell says this is a chance not to be underestimated.

“Providing a suitable pathway for young players to develop their on and off court skills and grow into successful young men has always played a big part in this club,” said Flavell. “Securing a role as a development player can for some be the first step towards a long and successful career in professional basketball, and often these players will emerge from the Bartercard League.

“It is a chance to practice day in day out with a championship winning roster and to spend time on and off court with some of the great mentors and leaders in the game. It is not purely about basketball, this is about learning how to become a Breaker, understanding and living by the club’s values and standards on and off court. There is a wealth of young talent coming through the New Zealand league”

The application process is open to all-comers, including those players who are or have been previously in the Breakers Academy Programme. The initial list of applicants will be whittled down to a selection who will be invited to attend trials at Atlas Place, with the final selection made from those in attendance.

Applicants are asked to send relevant information to Judd Flavell by July 14th, with those invited back for the official tryouts notified with further information by July 19th.

Men’s Premier Championship

 

No Men’s Premier club basketball was played at the weekend with a planned break in the calendar.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Women’s Premier Championship

 

Focus on club basketball moved to the Women’s Premier championship while the MU23 and Men’s Prem took a planned break on Saturday.

 

Minties, despite a poor showing in the Patron’s trophy, showed that they were still a championship contender this season with a comprehensive 68-57 over long-term champion University in Cowles stadium on Saturday.

Halswell, the  Patron’s trophy winner, started very strongly against Pioneer and sustained a strong second half challenge before winning 48-38 while Lincoln University had a comfortable 62-35 win over Gators.

 

Minties, still a championship contender, beating University 68-57

A six man Minties raced away to a 24-3 first-quarter lead against a stunned University which was struggling to find combinations without the direction of inspirational leader and Canterbury Wildcat, Pip Connell who is still out injured. Kaiapoi based Gemma Hazeldene ran many promising Minties moves, slotting 23 points while Anita Snowdon stepped up her efforts in the second quarter as the momentum slowed, Minties still ahead 38-16 at the turn around. Tessa Burry and Laken Wairau found form and combinations as the young students started a controlled comeback, out-pointing Minties 19-7 to trail 35-45. Another Canterbury Wildcat Rosanna Katene stepped up to keep University close, helping to close the gap to around four points but Minties dug deep through the efforts of Hayley Gray and Olivia Bensley to ride out the challenge.

 

Halswell defeats Pioneer 48-38

Guided by Canterbury Wildcat Lori McDaniel and backed up by a former Wildcats Anna Williams and Bridgett Salkeld, Halswell moved to a handy 28-17 lead by half-time but had to withstand a strong challenge from Pioneer in the second half. Tessa Boagni made a tentative return to the courts after suffering an ankle sprain with the Wildcats while the lively Connie Dick set the moves for Pioneer. Boagni with support from a hard-working Gabby Edmondson kept pace with Halswell but could not bridge the gap.

 

Lincoln University, a comfortable 62-35 win over Gators.

Gabby’s bigger sister Fran Edmondson dominated the boards as Lincoln University kept Gators scoreless in the first quarter and ahead 24-7 at half-time. Bailey McDougall added punch in the first half for Lincoln and Kate McLaughlin more in the second while Rachel Harrison was forced to shoot from behind the arc, landing four triple pointers for her efforts for Gators.

Placemakers Wolves bounced back beating High School Old Boys 85-71

The double defending champion Placemakers Wolves bounced back strongly to beat off a strong challenge from High School Old Boys, winning 85-71 on Sunday in Cowles stadium. Cam Costley with 28 points and brother Gareth with 18 did the damage for Placemakers with support from the tall John McDonald while Martin Maunsell (22) and Cris Benevice 18 points replied for Old Boys.

 

North Canterbury edges Gators 54-47.

North Canterbury kept its chances of making the top six section of round two in the Men’s Division one competition have lifted with a narrow 54-47 win over Gators in Cowles Stadium on Sunday. They sit on 13 points in fifth place but have only one game to go whereas Checkers and High School Boys have two to play and one point adrift. Checkers have two tougher challenges ahead and North Canterbury beat them narrowly the previous week 77-75. North Canterbury meets lowly ranked Pioneer Blue in its final round robin game this Saturday and has the bye the following week.

Key contributors to North Canterbury’s win were Reilly Price on 18 points and new recruit from Mid Canterbury team Gannetts, Jamie Carlson on 11 while NCJBA Development Officer, Angus Gourlay marshalled the teams efforts to good effect.

 

Atami staves off a strong challenge from Pioneer Yellow 67-62.

After the previous week’s giant-killing of Placemakers, Atami struggled to keep a much improved Pioneer Yellow at bay but through the efforts of Andy Baird and Jamie Fitzsimmons Atami held on dearly as Pioneer threw everything at them, led through the tenacious efforts of Benjamin Bathurst (25) and Mark Simmons with 17 points.

 

University accounts for Checkers 64-50

University continued their improved play over the past two weeks, despite a frigid start (air temperature was 0 degrees at tipoff outside, and assumed to be the same indoors) they were able to eventually warm up and find some scoring touch. Checkers missed Bob Weatherford on the court, but he did what he could from the sideline, helping to coach his team. Chris Grant led all scorers with 20.

 

Wolverines too experienced for U19’s 97-68

The Div 1 boys showed too much class for the young Canterbury U19's as they cruised to an easy 97 - 68 victory.
Stu Brooker, the oldest player in Div 1 turned back the clock as he dominated inside the paint for 26pts, 27reb, 11assists and 6 blocks. Wolfpacks other big man, Nick Purcell was also too much for the young U19's as he scored an impressive 22pts, 18reb 5 blocks and 5 assists.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

Men’s Under 20  

 

Focus also moved to the very competitive Men’s Under 20 grade where 16 school and club teams are challenging for a top eight play-off position in one of the strongest school competitions around the country. The defending champion Burnside High repulsed a strong challenge from St Bedes College, pulling away in the second half to win 94-67, the unbeaten Middleton Grange Gators, the school team, had a comfortable win over Christ’s College 74-28, the ever improving Lincoln High School upset Wolverines 81-61 and in a battle of the brothers, Morris-Whyte and Ross, North Canterbury came back in the second spell to edge out Rangiora High 69-60. Rangiora is holding on to the important number eight spot while still being challenged by St Bedes College, St Andrews College, Aranui High and Gators all just one point behind. Stac have a catch-up game in hand down for 4^th July against Middleton Gators.

 

North Canterbury fights back to edge out Rangiora High 69-60

Many eyes were focused on the Under 20 grade battle featuring the two sets of brothers going head to head with Lawson Morris-Whyte stealing the show for North Canterbury making a number of spectacular dunks, one over his baby brother William playing for the opposition. In another match up during the game big brother Callum Ross was closely guarding little brother Alex who is just making his presence felt in the Rangiora side.

Rangiora came out all guns blazing, catching the older North Canterbury boys by surprise and raced to a handy 16-9 first-quarter lead but it had taken five minutes before mainstay Jordan De Winter started the ball rolling for North Canterbury. Riley Block ranged wide and free, penetrating slack North Canterbury defence while Will Morris-Whyte was on hand to put back any misses.

As the Rangiora defence work slackened for a moment, Lawson Morris-Whyte was ready to punish Rangiora, grabbing the ball at both ends of the court and slotting 34 points at will. Liam Connelly and De Winter added to the pressure as North Canterbury came back strongly in the second-quarter to take a 41-29 half-time lead.

The third-quarter slowed to a trickle as both sides maintained very tight defences with North Canterbury still ahead 49-37 but, Rangiora lifted its efforts in the final quarter, closing the margin to within four points before North Canterbury pulled clear to win by an uncomfortable nine points.

The win leaves North Canterbury comfortably sharing sixth place with Lincoln on 15 points in the race for a top eight play-off spot while Rangiora sits on a narrow one point lead in eight placing with four other teams a point behind.

 

Cashmere thumps Papanui 98-57

Both teams left the defense at home with a high scoring start to the game with Papanui really coming to play in the first quarter which ended 30-20. Still trying to understand some of our systems the team did a good job stepping up in the second and 3rd quarter outscoring Papanui 53 -24. For Papanui Taylor Britt hit some deep 3s and was a challenging match up all game. The bigs did a great job for us George Love ended with 29 points 13 rebounds and fellow big Sam Oldroyd grabbing 14 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Alex Irvine nearly had a quad double scoring 22 points as well as getting 10 steals, 8 assists and 8 rebounds.

 

Aranui Academy clips Pioneer 70-64

Pioneer Pacers continued to improve as they rattled the students from the Aranui Academy with Aranui’s long-term coach Bert Knops scratching his head in frustration as the Aranui moves failed to materialize or crumble under pressure.

Aranui’s key weapon Jarvis Ataera was in good form, slotting 27 points but having a close battle with Pioneer’s William Brown and Kyle Spriggs as Pioneer sneaked ahead 14-13 at the first break. Ricky McDonald added some flare in the second-quarter as Aranui edged ahead 28-25 by the half-time break.

Pioneer’s main contributor Karesse added to Aranui’s frustrations as he added key baskets ion the way to compiling 19 points including a triple pointer to finish but Aranui eventually escaped to a narrow win through numerous points form the free throw line.

 

Lincoln High scorches Wolverines 81-61

Wolverines u20 got off to an ok start against Lincoln high school. Things were fairly even at the 1st break with Lincoln holding the slight edge 21-18. From there things went downhill with Wolverines unable to handle the full court defence from Lincoln. Wolverines continuously threw the ball away and struggled to contain the lethal 2 punch combo from former U17 Wolverines players James Cawthorn (3...1) and Stuart Erskine (21). Wolverines were outscored through the middle two quarters 44-19 and trailed 65-37 going into the final period. After some stern words from the coach Wolverines finished off with a 28-14 final quarter but it was too little too late and Lincoln took the game comfortably 81-61.

Burnside rattles St Bedes 94-67
Jahnim Campbell (22) and Oliver Fairbrother (21) had Burnside up and running quickly out to a 29-18 lead against a stunned St Bedes but the experienced Bedes coach, Michael Barnett slowed the game down to allow his young charges, Ben Hood (17) and Connor McCrossin (17) to make some inroads into Burnsides dominance. Lauchie Weston (18) stepped up to keep the St Bedes momentum rolling against the taller Burnside attack. Shou Nisbett added great depth to Burnside’s challenge showing the benefits of training with the NZ U17 side and a recent NBA camp, rebounding both boards strongly and intercepting many a stray ball. After trailing 37-53 at the turn around, Bedes matched Burnside in the third-quarter but pressure told in the final period and Burnside shot clear.

 

Gators 59 St Andrews 54.

In a key battle to see which side can dislodge Rangiora High from the top eight spot, St Andrews and Gators plied there trade with quiet determination. Jayden Chan, showing many advanced skills of his older brother Dan, ran in four baskets for St Andrews as Max Cowey and Cole Jefferies began to dominate for Gators. After leading 18-15 at the first break Stephen Collins led the way to nudge Gators ahead but the experienced Zak De Roo settled the St Andrews defence and kept his side in touch, trailing 30-32 at the turn around.

Honours were even in a tight third quarter with De Roo penetrating more often while Cowey replied in the final quarter as Gators inched clear in the closing stages.

 

Middleton Grange Gators too strong for Christ’s College

The unbeaten Middleton Grange Gators had too much depth for the hard working Christ’s College team, pulling quickly to a 32/7 first-quarter lead through the efforts of Zach Lilburne, Ash Adamson and Peter McLean. Regan Burnett splashed a three followed by three bombs from behind the arc to George Clomp. Middleton ran its bench in the second quarter with Mclean adding extra pressure in the second half. Oliver Jones-Allen made good use of the relaxed defence in the second half to finish with a promising 14 points for the College.

 

Boys High 81 Shirley Spartens 49

Shirley Boys High did well to keep in touch with the more experienced Boys High side, led by the tall Nathan Campbell with strong support from the athletic Scott Ralston. Connor Page and Steve Chambers carried the early workload for Shirley.

Boys High stepped up the pressure in the second quarter, restricting Shirley to just two baskets while adding 25 to take them to a handy 45-24 lead as the baskets flowed for Campbell.

Patrick Roger led a Shirley challenge in the third quarter but Boys high forged ahead in the final quarter through the efforts of Andre Tamagushiku and Ralston.

Boy’s Under 17

 

Burnside White challenged by Shirley Spartens

The defending champion Burnside White received a wake-up call as it was strongly challenged by an ever-improving Shirley Boys High team in the quiet confines of St Bedes College gym on a cold frosty morning but managed to keep its unbeaten record eventually winning 68-60.

Shirley led out strongly through the efforts of Connor Page and Jake Simpson while Burnside kept in touch through Han Gil Jeong and Oliver Fairbrother. After trailing 10-14 at the first break, Burnside opened up the Shirley defence through the efforts of Kazuki Tsukiji and Page, taking a 33-24 lead by half-time.

Shirley rallied strongly in the third-quarter levelling the game 48-48 with Ollie Lidstone stepping up for Shirley. Fairbrother (15) led the Burnside recovery in the final period of play while Lidstone kept Shirley close on hand.

 

In other matches Burnside’s second team Burnside Green moved into a top six placing with a narrow 76-69 win over Papanui, St Andrews held off a strong recovery from Cashmere Gold before winning 66-59, Middleton White beat Christ’s College 58-37 while Boys High held off a strong second-half effort from St Bedes before winning 53-45.

 

The grade will divide into top six bottom, five after the final round robin games this weekend. Cashmere Gold and St Bedes are head to head to see who can dislodge Burnside Green from the sixth spot as the boys in green have an almost impossible task off beating the Burnside White team. A St Bedes win will probably be enough to put them ahead of Burnside Green as they beat Burnside earlier while Cashmere have little chance having lost their encounter with Burnside.

Shirley and Boys High are fighting for third placing while Middleton Green in second place takes on the Middleton White side and St Andrews clashes with Christ’s College.
