Men’s Premier Championship

Atami repulsed a strong final-quarter challenge from Wolverines, winning 76-64 in the third round of the Men’s Premier club basketball championship played in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

Gators with speed and precision pulled away in the second half to defeat the defending champion Checkers 76-56 while University turned its early season poor performances around with a solid 97-67 victory over Lincoln University.

University thumps Lincoln 97-67

The University Men turned in a power-packed performance as it overwhelmed its Lincoln counterparts, leading 19-10 at quarter-time and then continued to extend their lead. King force behind the University revival after abysmal performances to date this season was Willy McVitty who claimed 27 points from 12/20 field goal attempts and finished with a huge double-double adding 23 rebounds (11def, 12off) to his stats. Matt Campbell added 16 and Ollie Crawford another 15 points as University shot 44/85 at 52%. University also got far more points off the bench, 28 to Lincoln’s 11, while dominating the boards at both ends, recording 73 rebounds to Lincoln’s 32.

Campbell slotted 3/7 from behind the arc but such was the pressure that neither side gained much from the outside shot, both sides launching 13 attempts and Lincoln only landed two.

By half-time University had edged to a 41-28 lead and 62-40 by the third break but the pressure came off in the final quarter as University out-pointed Lincoln 35-26.

Lincoln’s whizz kid Nick Erwood was contained to just 14 points and five rebounds while Aled Jones controlled play as best he could under close attention from University. Manuel Nunez-Tenasque and Vincent George also got among the action for Lincoln.

Gators beats Checkers 76-56

Gators continued their push towards championship honours this season with a fast running game. Jordan Duggan splashed three triple pointers early followed by more from Chris Duthie and Zach Lilburne. After trailing 25-14 at the first break, Checkers fought back through the efforts of its coach Kenny Perkins and Ben Teale while danger-man Nat Connell actions were quite limited, scoring only seven points before retiring. By half time Checkers only trailed 41-34 and it was still anyone’s game.

Matt Stevenson got among the action for Gators in the second half with 18 points while Duthie continued to penetrate Checkers reasonable tight defence. Ben Van Oosten and Pip Johnston toiled long and hard for Checkers, but without the services of the brothers, Bede Marsters and Ethan Rusbatch, Checkers were continuing to struggle in pressure situations.

Atami outpoints Wolverines 76-64

Atami marched on with a good team performance to quell the strong Wolverines attack. Rusty Thompson and Paul McFarlin set the ground work for Atami with some telling baskets while Lionel Hopgood rebounded strongly to keep Wolverines in the hunt. Atami’s tight defence had Wolverines struggling after recent top efforts with Wolverines landing only 25/65 field goal attempts (38%) to Atami’s 30-70 (43%). Michael Kinley still threw his body all around the court but was limited to nine points and last week’s heroics from Nino Nabong failed to materialise, managing one early triple pointer and another baskets for his five points.

American bound Mike Karena only managed eight points and seven rebounds for Wolverines. After leading 20-25 at the half-time break, Ritchie Howell crashed the boards for a valuable 16 points and eight rebounds as Atami extended its lead to 53-31 (14 points) but Wolverines where not done yet and continued to close the gap. By the third break they trailed 42-62 and continued to close until running out of time.

Master coach Jamie Graham adds to this report

The Premier boys struggled to get going for over 3qtrs against the undefeated Atami boys as they fell behind 53 - 31 going into the final qtr.
A huge fight back in the final quarter (22-14) saw the Wolfpack get within six pts before Ashley Rees hit the dagger 3pter to kill any hope of a dramatic comeback, finally losing 76 - 64.
Captain fantastic Mikey Kinley was kept to a season low nine pts, 2/11 shooting as the team shot just 38.5% (25/65) for the game.

Women’s PremierChampionship

Patron’s trophy winner Halswell got back on track with a solid 62-25 win over Gators in the second round of the Women’s Premier championship. The return of Emma Hazeldine sparked a strong effort from Minties to beat off a strong challenge from Pioneer to win 77-47 while the defending champion University repulsed a strong second-half effort from Lincoln University to scrape home in the final quarter 62-52.

University repulses Lincoln University 62-52

Tessa Burry and Ashley Fane led University’s early efforts while Fran Edmondson and Hannah Turton got among the boards for Lincoln. University looked to have the game under control, leading 14-9 by quarter-time and 28-21 by the second break. Bridgette Lawn responded for Lincoln grabbing many rebounds and slotting key baskets as Lincoln went ahead 39-38 by three-quarter time as University began to miss their target. Canterbury Wildcats Rosanna Katene and Laken Wairau then stepped up to put University back on track with some strong play and deep penetration.

Minties beats Pioneer 77-47

Pioneer gave one of its better performances this season against a fast running Minties. Reinforced by the return of Anna Constable, Pioneer took a handy 12-10 lead into the first break but the speedy Hazeldine fired up Minties while running in 23 points. Sally-Anne Tull and Hayley Gray both added to the Minties efforts as Minties pulled clear to lead 30-24 by half-time and race away in the second half to a comfortable victory.

Connie Dick distributed the ball for Pioneer while Harriett Hlavac and Hannah Brand also got among the action with 11 points each.

Halswell 62 Gators 25

Halswell had too much strike power for Gators, with Rebecca Falloon taking Halswell to a 16-5 first-quarter lead. Italian and Canterbury Wildcat Cecilia Zambrini added to the Halswell efforts while the mother-daughter combination, Marinda and Natasha, got in the action as Halswell continued to extend their lead.

Scorers were:

University 62 (Rosanna Katene 15, Laken Wairau 13, Ashley Fane 13) Lincoln University 52 (Fran Edmondson 19, Hannah Turton 10) HT: 28-21. Halswell 62 (Cecillia Zambrini 14, Marinda Van Vuuren 14, Natasha Van Vuuren 10) Gators 25 (Marnie Block 7). HT: 31-13.

Men’s Division One

Men’s Div 1/MU23 challenge bye teams game

Believe it or not story from Sunday at Cowles

Jamie Graham sends his report

An unofficial record or two may have been set in Cowles stadium on Sunday in the Men’s Div 1/MU23 challenge bye teams game with the Canterbury Under 19 team taking on Atami MU23 with MP player, Rusty Thomson filling in, it took three periods of extra time before Atami sneaked home 161-159.    Rusty Thompson scorched 91 points (possibly another unofficial record including 21x3pters (another record?) - hit three to win in 3rd overtime) with back up from Brynn McLennan on 45.
Canterbury U19’s were led by Ben Hood 63 (puff, puff), Louis Mann 41, Ashleigh Adamson 32 and Logan Woodill 17 points.
Thrilling game that took three overtimes to get a winner. Rusty hit buzzer beater from just over halfway to win with 2.2sec on the clock. No official score sheet done as Rusty had to play as Atami didn’t have enough players. Scores taken from a parent’s stat sheet. Great game but no defence haha. LOL

Back to the more serious competition in the very tough battle for bragging rights in the very competitive Men’s Div one grade. Wolverines, the 2010 champion, have taken a narrow two point lead in the competition, ahead of long-term champion Placemakers Wolves and arch-rival Atami sharing second place while University, HSOB, Checkers and North Canterbury are locked in a close battle to find the Top six after Week 11.

About this time each year according to those in the know, Placemakers, with the three Costley brothers ruling the roost, appear to seemingly take the pressure off, having won the grade four times in five seasons (2008/9 and 2011/12), often coming back from the impossible while Atami came up with some great moves to upset the boys in blue, winning 70-61 on Sunday.

Atami upsets defending champion Placemakers Wolves 70-61

James Lissaman sends in his report

Atami used some solid play across the two middle quarters, to turn a four point deficit into a six point lead, which they were able to hang on to and grow to the final margin of nine once the Wolves were forced to start fouling in an effort to extend the game.

Andy Baird won the battle of the big men, scoring 18 points, whilst holding John McDonald to only 9, and Jamie Fitzsimons also contributed 18 for Atami. For Wolves, who were missing Sam Evans this week, they tried to share the scoring load around, but only Cameron Costley (15), Fraser Costley (13) and Andrew Gebbie (10) were able to reach double figures.

University too much experience for Pioneer Yellow winning 85-65

James Lissaman sends in his report

Tim Richardson’s team had struggled the last two weeks, and was eager to have Chris Grant back in the lineup, after being away for a few weeks on holiday. Unfortunately for the Pacers, this meant they were in line to receive a lot of shots, and a lot of scoring. Grant led all scorers in this game with 30 (3 three pointers), backed up by Joe “The Destroyer” Hammond (19, 4 three pointers), Richardson with 11, and James Lissaman with 10. The size advantage University had, meant even their missed shots were still able to be converted into points a high percentage of the time.

For The Pacers, Ben Magon caused problems attacking the rim off ball screens, leading his team with 25, helping the Pacers be extremely competitive for three of the four quarters (losing the second 25-10). Mark Simmons helped the Pacers efforts with 11.

North Canterbury edges Checkers 77-75 in a key game

Angus Gourlay, NCJBA Development Officer, has supplied this match report

"It was a game that was a must win for North Canterbury if they wanted to keep their hopes of making the top 6 alive. Both teams came out strong and was a tightly contested game for most of the first half with the Checkers going in to the half time break with a narrow 33-31 lead. Some strong work by the returning Corey Crampton down low helped North Canterbury pull away in the third  but the lead was pulled right back in the fourth and came down to the wire at the end of the game. Thanks to some clutch plays by Simon Falloon in the final couple of minutes North Canterbury managed to hold on and secure the win."

North Canterbury outpointed Checkers 28-16 in the third period, leading 59-49 and Checkers ran out of time as it reversed the scoring 26-18 in the final quarter.

Wolverines 81 HSOB 57

Jamie Graham sent in his report

The Div One boys got back to their winning ways with a team effort win over HSOB, thumping them 81 – 57 after leading 36-28 at Half-time.
Six of the seven players scored double digits with Paul Havill leading the way after a quiet game the week before scoring 18pts.
Carl Willocks had another great game adding 16pts with three 3pters.
For Old Boys Cris Benevice topped the sheet with a hard-earned 17 points while the veteran Craig Wilson set many of the moves.

Scorers were:

Wolverines 81 (Paul Havill 18, Carl Willocks 16, Jamie Graham 14, Shaun Dornbusch 12, Nick Purcell 11, Todd Blake 10) HSOB 57 (Cris Benevice 17, Craig Wilson 12, Jamie Day 10),North Canterbury 77 (Corey Crampton 20, Simon Falloon 19, Angus Gourlay 13) Checkers 75(James Harris 17, Stephen McLeod 15, Gabriel Calcott 15, Michael Young 12), Gators 66 (Brad Young 18, Logan Campbell 17) Pioneer Blue 42 (Ollie Dawe 16), University 85 (Christ Grant 30, Jo Hammond 19, Tim Richardson 11, James Lissaman 10) Pioneer Yellow 65 (Ben Magon 25, Mark Simmons 11), Atami 70 (Andy Baird 18, Jamie Fitzsimmons 18) Placemakers 61 (Cam Costley 15, Fraser Costley 13, Andrew Gebbie 10). Bye teams game: Atami MD1 161 (Rusty Thompson 91 inc 21x 3pts, Brynn McLennan 45) Canterbury Under 19 159 (Ben Hood 63, Louis Mann 41, Ashleigh Adamson 32, Logan Woodill 17) in 3rd period over-time.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

Gators moved into the Number one contender for U23 championship honours after repulsing a strong challenge from Wolverines to win 72-67 in a top-of-the-table clash while a re-vitalised University stretched Lincoln University to win 73-51 leaving Gators, Wolverines. Lincoln and Atami to qualify for the Top four double round robin. The defending champion Checkers finished in fifth place and University sixth and will play the remaining three teams in a single round robin Bottom five before an elimination play-off on 31st August to see which two teams will join the Top four in the Quarter-Finals that commence on the 7th September.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday morning’s action in Cowles stadium.

CBA U23 Reports – Round 9

University of Canterbury v Lincoln University (73 – 51)

Ollie Crawford, once again, proved that he may be the most underrated player in the competition with a huge 34 point and 17 rebound game to lead the University of Canterbury to a 22-point W over rivals Lincoln University. Bolstered by the return of Wellington Saints and ex-NZ U20 guard Matt Campbell (11 points, 5 steals), the Varsity squad proved too deep and too strong for their country counterparts, leaping out to a 20 – 6 quarter lead and never relinquishing it. However, as usual, Lincoln’s Nick ‘Stick’ Erwood dropped another double-double (31 points, 10 rebs), showing off his increasing repertoire of offensive moves, including his famous baseline drive and floater. Seven foot centre Vinny George added another 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Lincoln Bulls.

Pioneer v North Canterbury (60 – 57)

Pioneer notched up their first W of the season against North Canterbury, 60 – 57 - however it was not without drama, as NC almost pulled off a remarkable comeback thanks to late back-to-back treys from perimeter shooting specialist Liam Connelly (13). NC ran out to a narrow 20 – 18 first quarter lead but Pioneer, led by guard William Marsden (22) and swingman Tyla Harrison-Hunt (12), ran in front at half time 35 – 33 and then maintained the lead going into the final quarter up 5 points. North Canterbury failed to capitalize on numerous chances in the fourth, until Connelly heated up, but unfortunately ran out of time as Pioneer clung on to victory. For NC, Scott Edwards and Sam Haigh-Ward added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Gators v Wolverines (72 – 67)

The clash of the two unbeaten teams proved to be a nail biter as Gators pulled out a victory in a closely fought match, 72 – 67. Gators pulled out to an early lead, but the young Wolverines side pulled them back through sheer hustle and determination. However, the difference between the sides on the day was the strong perimeter shooting from the Gators guards, namely Jordan Duggan (17) and Jozef Knottenbelt (15). Athletic lefty forward Tom Mulvihill (13) and former Junior Tall Black Chris Duthie (10) were the other double digit scorers for Gators. For Wolverines, Oli Davies sliced his way to the hoop for 23 points and Michael Karena was an ever present force inside, adding 12 points.

Checkers v Royals (74 – 63)

Bottom of the table Royals proved again that they are no easy beats, pushing defending champions Checkers all the way to the end, with Checkers narrowly coming out victors, 74 – 63. In what seems to be a recurring trend, Royals’ swingman Simon Hodgson ran well in transition to post 26 points. Jade Penn added another 10 for Royals. However, Checkers’ constant perimeter threats Aidan Ryan (15) and Jacob Naylor (11), and jack-of-all trades Tyson Silberry (11), helped to fend off the Royals’ charge to ensure a Checkers victory.

Scores were:

University 73 (Ollie Crawford 34, 17R, Rowan Feeney 17, Matt Campbell 11) Lincoln University 51 (Nick Erwood 31, 10R, Vincent George 12, 13R) , Pioneer 60 (William Marsden 22, Tyla Hunt 12) North Canterbury 57 (Liam Connelly 13, Scott Edwards 11, Sam Haigh-Ward 10), Gators 72 (Jordan Duggan 17, Jozef Knottenbelt 15, Thomas Mulvihill 13, Chris Duthie 10) Wolverines 67 (Oli Davies 23, Michael Karena 12), Checkers 74 (Aidan Ryan 15, Tyson Silberry 11, Jacob Naylor 11) Royals 63 (Simon Hodgson 26, Jade Penn 10). Bye: Atami.

Men’s Under 20

North Canterbury, Lincoln High and Rangiora High are holding on tightly to a top eight position on the ladder while biting at their heels are St Bedes and St Andrews Colleges after eight rounds of the fifteen round competition. The Top eight go into a Quarter-final play-off (1 v 8, 2 v 7 and so on) on Saturday 31st August while the bottom group play-off for final placings.

North Canterbury edges Christchurch Boys High 81-72

The North Canterbury Under20 side had a tough battle against arch-rivals Christchurch Boys High and in a game of changing fortunes North Canterbury pulled away with a strong final-quarter to an upset 81-72 win. Lawson Morris-Whyte splashed in 26 points including several tremendous dunks as he took control of the boards. Playing back-to-back games Liam Connelly added a key contribution of 17 points while setting many of the moves. Jordan De Winter was solid on defence and quickly penetrated Boys High to score some telling baskets. Daniel Mills also worked hard keeping the score moving for Rangiora while Jarrod Satherley gathered in precious rebounds and put back shots in the closing moments to see North Canterbury home.

Boys High led 24-19 at the first break but North Canterbury closed the gap to trail by just 37-39 at the turn around. Nathan Campbell controlled much of the ball as Boys High challenged strongly with early support from Scott Ralston while Tom Davison and Joshua Campbell featured in many promising moves.

After leading 56-50 at the three-quarter mark North Canterbury crumbled under pressure from Boys High, the gap narrowing until finally some shots started to drop and the country boys escaped to a narrow win.

Burnside High demolished a lack-lustre Rangiora High school 87-37

The Men’s Under 20 champion Burnside is again finding top form after a recent set-back and comfortably demolished a lack-lustre Rangiora High school 87-37. Riley Block toiled long and

Hard for Rangiora but could only show eight points for his efforts and Rupert Jackman finished next with seven. Burnside’s Shou Nisbet, a NZ U17 player, who has just returned from an Asia Pacific Team Camp, presented by NIKE and the National Basketball Association in Nanjing, China, quickly scored 23 points on Saturday, very athletic about the court and caused Rangiora players much difficulty. Josh Coard and Oliver Fairbrother were always a handfill for Rangiora to contain, especially in the last quarter when the game was already lost.

Wolverines pulls away from Gators to win 60-47

Wolverines coach Nick Purcell supplied this report

Wolverines u20 were slow to get going against Gators u20 and trailed 15-17 after the first. It was youngster Lewis Davidson (13 points) that provided some much needed energy off the bench in his strongest performance of the season. Hayden Murphy (14 points) and Aaron Gunstone (11 points) stepped up the defensive rebounding in the second half and held Gators big man Tarapi Neilson (12 points) scoreless for the half. In the end Wolverines pulled away to win 60-47

Cashmere High bounces back with a solid 109-39 win over Shirley Spartens

Cashmere looked like it was making up for lost time as it raced away to a 38-3 first-quarter lead through the early efforts of Joemar Altabano and  Kyle Tikao while the towering George Love, back from a recent ankle sprain, picked up much of the loose ball like picking cherries from a gigantic but low-lying cherry tree. Alex Irvine kept the momentum rolling late in the quarter.

Scott Howell must have had some stern words for his young Shirley charges as they came out in the second quarter to match the Cashmere effort with Connor Page and Patrick Roger, two of Shirley’s five U17 players in the side.

After leading 54-18 at the turn around, Ben Sheat ran his bench to good effect as Cashmere pulled further away to a big win and cement a share of third placing in the grade.

Papanui High records its first win, beating Aranui Academy 72-67

There would have been another round of cream cakes, this time at the Britt household, as Papanui came from behind with a strong third-quarter to upset the Aranui Academy side 72-67 on Saturday, Papanui’s first win  since entering the open grade competition.

The Ataera brothers, Jarvis and Javan, gave Aranui a strong start as the Academy raced to a 21-10 first quarter lead. Taylor Britt, landed two early triples before ducking and driving through weakening Aranui defence as Papanui closed to trail 29-35 by half-time. Britt compiled a handsome 44 points with assistance from Carl Isitt and Alem Gebrekirstos as Papanui outpointed Aranui 27-13 in the third quarter to lead 56-48 at the third break and hold off an Aranui recovery in the final period to take a well-deserved win.

Lincoln High overcome a strong St Bedes challenge 88-80

Lincoln High kept a possible top eight chance alive, forcing St Bedes to drop below the dividing line but was made to work much harder in the second spell after St Bedes had fought back from a six point first quarter deficit to lead Lincoln 47-42 at the break.

James Cawthorn, released a top performance as he outran or drove around his many markers to score a mammoth 44 points for Lincoln. His go to man, Stu Erskine, added another 22 points, picking up many useful rebounds or loose ball.

Lauchie Weston launched the early play for St Bedes while Benjamin Hood plundered the hoops from behind the arc to break Lincoln’s defence. Connor McCrossin added to the Bedes attack as they outpointed a slackening Lincoln in the second-quarter.

Sam Riley pulled Lincoln back down to earth with some good baskets, setting Lincoln’s challenge back in motion. Erskine and bench player Ben Bowie mopped up the remainder to carry Lincoln to a much needed win.

Pioneer beats Christs College 54-38

In a bottom-of-the-table challenge Pioneer started the first period strongly through the efforts of William Brown but was soon hauled back in the second period as Christs College came back to trail 17-21. Nick Kwant and Paul Viteetarm found the hoop to send Pioneer on its way in the second spell while Louis Mann kept the College in touch.

Women’s Division One/Under 20

Checkers, the defending WD1 champion, shares the lead with the unbeaten and 2009 champion Royals on 14 points but Checkers has played one more game. The defending WU20 champion is in third place in the combined grade with 13 points from 7 games. Division one stalwarts Minties is close behind on 12 points. A chart showing the individual grade standings is also below.

Pina Lissaman, Wildcats Asst coach, observed all the WD1/U20 action in Cowles on Sunday

What an exciting week for Women’s Div 1/U20 Basketball!!

Rangi Ruru pips Halswell WD1 45-44

Halswell and Rangi Ruru went head to head slugging it out with Halswell taking a narrow lead in the first half. Spectators had to keep an eye on the scoreboard as the lead changed numerous times and a couple of timely made free-throws took the game into overtime. Strong defence by both teams in the extra period made it a low scoring over time with Rangi closing it out by 1 point. (Anna Radovonich 10, Rangi Ruru)

Checkers too strong for Pioneer Pacers winning 99-49

Checkers proved too strong for the up and coming Pioneer Pacers with solid play from the more experienced players Helen Neighbours and Step Hilton. Helen lead all scorers with 30 points, she received awesome assists from her team mates. Chrystal Pal from the Pacers put up a strong fight to lead the Pacers scoring with 23 points. (Helen Neighbours 30, Step Hilton 19, Checkers: Chrystal Pal 23, Rose Clarkson 10, Pioneer)

Royals beats Pioneer Red 80 – 29

Undefeated Royals still keep their clean record with no loses playing great team basketball. Pioneer Red found it hard to defend inside players Pina Lissaman and Jo Casey and the quick outlet passes to guard Candice Costley show that the oldies still have it.   (Pina Lissaman 30, Jo Casey 20, Candice Costley 12, Royals)

University 131 Cashmere High 5

University played a very strong game winning 131 to 5 against Cashmere. (Rosie O’Shea 25, Olivia Clarke 22, Varsity)

Minties secure win 59 – 34 over Gators

Minties showed why they are in the top four playing hard basketball and using their experience to their advantage. Captain Alana Pitman led by example in her defence getting her hands on many balls and causing havoc in the lane for Gators. Dominant inside play from Claudette Smith and Amiria Rule helped. (Claudette Smith 15, Amiria Rule 10, Minties: Tanaysha Morris 12 Gators)

Scorers were:

Royals 81 (Pina Lissaman 30, Jo Casey 20, Candice Costley 12, Royals) Pioneer Red (CGHS) 29, University 131 (Rosie O’Shea 25, Olivia Clarke 22)Cashmere HS 5, Rangi Ruru 45 (Anna Radovonich 10) Halswell 44, Checkers 99 (Helen Neighbours 30, Step Hilton 19) Pioneer Pacers 49 (Chrystal Pal 23, Rose Clarkson 10), Minties 59 (Claudette Smith 15, Amiria Rule 10) Gators 34 (Tanaysha Morris 12). Mid-week Men

University clips Checkers White 44-38

Bragging rights in this season’s Mid-week Men’s competition were retained by the defending champion University as it applied heavy pressure in the closing minutes to defeat arch-rival and three times former champion Checkers White 44-38 in a heavy battle for supremacy. In the first half University had trouble breaking through the tight Checkers defence so James Grant, Nick Gee and Stuart McGirr rained in three pointers from behind the arc. Meanwhile Checkers White got inside the students defences through the efforts of former Canterbury Ram Paul Isitt who slotted eight of his 14 points on the trot after Sam McNeil and Terry Brunel had plundered triple pointers. Brendon Cowles was also struggling to get inside the students defences so he put Checkers ahead 22-21 at half-time with a 3 pointer.

While Checkers double teamed University dangerman David Baird, restricting him to just one free throw all game, Universities Nick Gee found the hoop wide open to keep his side intouch as Checkers appeared to be pulling away. Just as quickly University then sunk several telling baskets in the closing minutes by Stuart McGirr and James Grant while Checekers shots began to fall short of the target.

Burnham overpowers Bandits 71-45

Bradley Fraser led his Burnham side to a swash buckling victory over Bandits in a battle for second place honours. Fraser with strong support from Shea Bently ran a fast breaking game back against the Bandits every time they scored and when shots went astray the tall Vince Van Dorn was around to pick up the rebounds and put back the shot for Burnham. By half-time Burnham where in control 29-17 but a determined Bandits kept up the pressure through the efforts of Nelson Santos (18) with very deceptive ball control skills and Rene Tolentino until exhaustion started to kick in in the fast running game.

Raiders 82-Goauld 37

Scott Richardson ran in early baskets as Raiders took control of its game against the deaf team, Goauld, slotting 18 points on the way to a 82-37 win. Five Raiders players hit double figure returns including the veteran organiser Derek Watson with 14 and Peter Randle who dominated the boards to grab 13 points.

Ashley Bentley stood out for Goauld with 19 hard-earned points.

Raiders win gave it a two win buffer ahead of four chasing teams , sharing 5th place with The Bishops in the race to find a top six after week 11.

The Bishops 115 Pioneer 28

The Bishops also wanted to consolidate its top 6 placing thumping Pioneer 115 to 28 after leading 48-13 at the break. Simon Meggat was almost unstoppable as he shot 39 points for the Bishops while Jack MCDougall shot accurately for 25.

Royals outpoints Sphinx 48-46

Royals came from behind with some more accurate shooting by James McPherson (22), beating The Sphinx 48-46 in the closing moments after having trailed 21-26 at half-time.

Zibin Li led the early challenge for The Sphinx with 18 points.

Lincoln University 85 Special Olympics 76

A make-shift Lincoln University team shrugged off a strong challenge from the Special Olympics team to pull way in the closing moments to win 85-76 after leading 48-36 at the break. The Special Olympics team closed the gap several times in the second spell through the efforts of Craig Bennett and Bradley Garner, both 20 points while Stephen Lowe led the Lincoln effort with 33 points.

Scorers were:

The Bishops 115 (Simon Meggett 39, Jack McDougall 25, Corey Crump 20, Murray Kennedy 17) Pioneer 28 (Mark Valentine 13, Mark Winter 10), Raiders 82 (Derek Watson 14, Peter Randle 13, Matt Havill 11, Steve Gainsford 11)  Goauld  37 (Ashley Bensley 19), Burnham 71 (Brad Fraser 16, Shea Bentley 16, Vince Van Dorn 16) Bandits 45 (Nelson Santos 18, Rene Tolentino 18), University 44 (Nick Gee 15, Stuart McGirr 10) Checkers White 38 (Paul Isitt 14), Lincoln University 85 (Stephen Lowe 33, Eddie Innis 18, Fabian Kulpe 17) Special Olympics 76 (Bradley Garner 20, Craig Bennett 20, Jason Roberts 12), Royals 48 (James McPherson 22, Sam Sloane 10) Sphinx 46 (Sibin Li 18, Jilong Zhang 13, Victor Chu 10).
