Men’s Premier Championship

Long term champion and Hoben trophy winner Atami repulsed a strong challenge from the  two-times defending champion Checkers, pulling away to win 86-69 in the second round encounter of the Men’s Premier championship played in Cowles stadium on Saturday.

Wolverines outstripped University with a heavy 93-40 win over the students while Lincoln University continued its strong challenge, a poor second quarter proving costly, eventually beaten 83-76 by a hot and cold Gators.

Gators outsmarts Lincoln 83-76

The Gators/Lincoln men’s clash had all the intrigues of a play-off match with the lead changing hands 13 times, the biggest lead being 13 points with Gators ahead 41-28 just before half-time. Matt Stevenson returned to splash four early baskets for Gators while Vincent George got around the boards to see Lincoln level 13-13 by the first break. Lincoln’s tight defence forced Gators to attack from behind the arc with Jozef Knottenbelt, Jordan Duggan (3) and Kaye McKee all obliging with triple pointers as Gators pulled to a 43-32 half-time lead.

Lincoln responded in the third-quarter through the solid efforts of Nick Erwood (29 points and eight rebounds), Manuel Nunez-Tenasque and James Cawthorn to level the game 59-59 by three-quarter-time. Better teamwork from Gators saw them pull clear in the final quarter.

Wolverines thumps University 93-40

Even the return of the lively Marty Davison didn’t inspire University as it slumped to a huge loss to a rampant Wolverines. Nino Nabong sparked Wolverines with some quick-fire triple pointers (3) and four other baskets (17 points) as Wolverines pulled away to lead 26-18 by quarter-time. Mike Karena and Oli Davies responded in the next quarter as Wolverines applied pressure, racing to a 50-24 half-time lead while the students could only manage three baskets. University fared a little better in the third quarter but Lionel Hopgood (10 points and 11 rebounds) had Wolverines in control of the boards while Karena added to the students’ problems, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds. Wolverines emptied its bench in the final quarter but still managed to outpoint University 23-2 to take a comfortable win.

Jamie Graham adds a Wolverines view

The Premier Men's team thumped University 93 - 40 in what was a one sided affair right from the get go.
Pocket rocket Nino "The Ninja" Nabong put on a scoring clinic as he scored all of his 17pts in the 1st qtr, the first 9pts from beyond the arc. He was a man possessed as he tore the Varsity defence to pieces.
The Wolverines defence however was suffocating keeping Varsity in single digits in both the 2nd qtr (6pts) and the 4th qtr (2pts) in a dominating display.
Wolverines shot the ball at over 50% (39/77) compared to Varsity's 26% (19/73) and outrebounded them 61 to 34. The Wolverines bench also got it done outscoring Varsity's bench 42 to 7.   Top performers where,
Nino Nabong 17pts, 4reb, 3ass and 3 steals
Oli Davies 15pts, 3ass and 3 steals
Michael Karena 14pts, 8reb
Lionel Hopgood 10pts, 11reb
Joel Stratford 7pts, 18reb, 5as and 2 steals

Atami draws away from Checkers to win 86-69

Checkers matched Atami in the first quarter through better teamwork through the efforts of Nat Connell and Pip Johnston while Atami’s player-coach Ash Rees led an aerial attack with some three pointers. Scottie Howell got among the paint for some hard earned points. Rees splashed more three’s as Atami applied pressure to edge out to a 42-34 half-time lead. Rusty Thompson and Paul McFarlin added depth to the Atami challenge in the third period while Ben Van Oosten put back numerous rebound shots to keep Checkers in touch. Johnston splashed four triples in the final quarter for Checkers, matched by more from Thomson and Cam Chalmers as Atami extended its lead.

Scorers were:

Atami 86 (Rusty Thomson 21, Paul McFarlin 17, Ash Rees 16, Scott Howell 15) Checkers 69 (Pip Johnston 22, Nat Connell 13, Ben Teale 12, Ben Van Oosten 11). HT: 42-34. Women’s Premier Championship

Lincoln University Women also caused an upset in the opening round of the Women’s Premier championship by upsetting Patron’s trophy winner Halswell 47-42 on Saturday. Minties where worked hard by a determined Gators team before getting on top in the third-quarter, going on to win 67-40 while long-term champion University strong second quarter led to a comfortable 60-32 win over Pioneer.

Lincoln University 47 Halswell 42

The Wildcats captain Shea Crotty showed that Lincoln meant business snapping an early three-pointer, followed by another from Charissa Theyers while Bridgette Lawn dominated under the boards. In the absence of an off-colour former Wildcat Anna Williams, Halswell was slow to react to the Lincoln challenge with only Rebecca Falloon responding to the call. Emily Baker threw her body all around the court to try and lift Halswell’s intensity. After trailing 27-20 at the half-way stage Halswell slowed the game but only closed the gap in the final quarter but ran out of time.

Minties 67 Gators 40

Gators showed more determination, especially in the first quarter, holding Minties back to trail 14-15 but the superior teamwork from Minties, led by Wildcat Hayley Grey started to pull away in the second half. Sally-Anne Tull showed a quick change of pace to drive around her marker and compile a valuable 18 points.

Anatasia Tauamiti stood out for Gators with a hard-earned 11 points.

University 60 Pioneer 32

University showed that it is still the team to beat this season with an actioned packed game against Pioneer, winning 60-32 against Pioneer. Teenage national representative Laken Wairau was busy all around the court, slotting 17 points as University marched to a 40-28 half-time lead when the Pioneer response fell away to a crawl. The experienced Connie Dick led Pioneer by example but apart from some assistance from Abby Rutledge, Pioneer was unable to bridge the gap.

Scorers were:

University 60 (Laken Wairau 17, Lauren Kelly 14, Tessa Burry 13) Pioneer 32 (Connie Dick 10, Abby Rutledge 10). HT: 40-28. Minties 67 (Sally-Anne Tull 18, Hayley Gray 10, Anita Snowdon 10) Gators 40 (Anatasia Tauamiti 11). HT: 26-19. Lincoln University 47 (Bailey McDougall 12, Fran Edmondson 10) Halswell 42 (Emily Baker 10, Rebecca Falloon 10). HT: 27-20.

Formats: Women’s Premier (6 Teams)

This competition will be split into two distinct competitions. The first 5 weeks will be Round Robin play with the finals on the 6th week for the Patron’s Trophy won by Halswell. The next ten weeks will be double Round Robin play with the semi-finals in the 17th week, Saturday 14th Sept and the Grand final in the 18th week Saturday 21st Sept, playing for the championship trophy. Men’s Division One

Atami knocks off Wolverines 64-59   Jamie Graham writes

The Div 1 Men lost their first game of the season to arch rivals Atami 64 - 59 leaving the U23's the only Wolverine’s team undefeated.
The boys just never got going which was very disappointing considering how well they played the week before. Carl Willocks (19pts) and Earl Rickard (14pts) tried gallantly to keep the game close in hopes of a Wolfpack run but it never came as poor execution offensively and lack of intensity defensively cost them dearly.
Paul Havill who sprained his ankle at training struggled through the pain as he scored 13pts, well below his season average.

Editor: Where was master blaster Jamie himself??

North Canterbury edges out Pioneer Yellow to win 81-74

North Canterbury in the Men’s Division one competition in Cowles Stadium got the edge over Pioneer Yellow to win 81-74 and record its second win of the season. A solid team effort saw North Canterbury home through the efforts of Jamie Carlson (18), Reilly Price (16), Lee Forman (14) and Angus Gourlay with 12 points. Benjamin Magon (26 points) was always among the North Canterbury defence to keep the Pioneer score ticking over.

Angus Gourlay NCJBASport Administrator & Basketball Development Officer
 sent in this contribution.

"North Canterbury got out to a strong start with several assists by Clinton Olson who has recently returned to playing. At several stages in the game Pioneer looked to come back but were held off by some sharp shooting from Reilly Price and Jamie Carlson." Carlson joins us from the Gannetts side that had to withdraw from the competition.

Placemakers Wolves overwhelms University 73-47

Close rivals over the last three or so seasons sees the double defending champion Placemakers Wolves prove far too strong for the former students, running out to a comfortable 73-47 winners over University and become the only unbeaten team in the competition. The three Costley brothers know each other’s play inside out and back to front, quickly taking control of the game while the tall John McDonald punched holes in the students defence.

Scorers were:

Atami 64 (James Burrows 13, Hamish Williams 12) Wolverines 59 (Carl Willocks 19, Earl Rickard 14, Paul Havill 13), North Canterbury 81 (Jamie Carlson 18, Reilly Price 16, Lee Forman 14, Angus Gourlay 12) Pioneer Yellow 74 (Benjamin Magon 26, Mark Simmons 16, Josh Poi 12, Daniel Challenger 10), Placemakers 73 (Gareth Costley 14, Cam Costley 13, John McDonald 11, Fraser Costley 10) University 47 (Edward Lissaman 10), HSOB 107 (Craig Wilson 24, Martin Maunsell 21, Jamie Day 14, Cris Benevice 13, Adam Lord 12) Canterbury U19 93 (Alex Irvine 30, Ashleigh Adamson 16, Ben Hood 13, Ryan Jones 13), Checkers 91 Pioneer Blue 46. Bye teams game: Checkers U23 103 Gators MD1 59.

Formats: Men’s Division 1 (11 Teams)

This competition will hold an 11 week round robin, which will determine the ranking of each team going forward. Men’s Under 23 Championship

Wolverines and Gators, the only two unbeaten teams, will be fighting out for bragging rights this Saturday after last Saturday’s results left a reasonably clear top four for the second round of games to follow. Unless a forfeit becomes involved then Gators 14 pts, Wolverines 14, Atami 13 and Lincoln University 12 pts will be in the top Four. Checkers 10, University 10, Nth Canty 8, Royals 8 and Pioneer 7 are all Bottom five. Checkers, the defending champion and University are the most likely candidates to win the elimination finals in Week 15 although an unpredictable North Canterbury could produce a surprise. The top two from the bottom pool join the top four for quarter-final play-offs.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday morning’s action in Cowles stadium.

CBA U23 Mens’ – Round 8

Gators v Atami (63 – 46)

Atami’s Cam Chalmers lit it up with 28 points but it was to no avail as the undefeated Gators were too clinical for a gritty Atami team, running out victors, 63 – 46. The fourth year Engineering uni trio consisting of Chris Duthie, Kaye McKee and Thomas Mulvihill were too much to handle for the smaller Atami team as they dropped 17, 15 and 11 points respectively. Gators will play Wolverines in an exciting matchup of unbeaten teams next week.

Lincoln University v Royals (94 – 51)

The Lincoln Bulls were much too strong for a depleted Royals outfit, winning with relative ease, 94 – 51. Former Burnside superstar Nick Erwood (28 points, 9 rebounds) was efficient as ever, dropping treys as if he were Danny Green or Darryl Corletto, Vinny George (19 points, 18 rebounds) took advantage of some size mismatches and Joe King hustled his way to a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. For Royals, ex-StAC student Nathan Hight worked hard for his own double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. The win for Lincoln all but assures them of finishing third on the first round of the U23 competition.

Wolverines v North Canterbury (94 – 43)

Continuing the trend of blowout wins in this round, the Wolfpack blew out the boys from North Canterbury by 51 points. The depth of the Wolverines squad showed with four players hitting double figures – captain Oli Davies (16), Michael Karena (14), James Levings (12) and Hitesh Pratap (10). Mobile forward Pratap commented that it was, “probably the most complete performance we have had so far and we will need to play even better next week.” For North Canterbury, it was the consistent Scott Edwards (15) and Angus Forbes (10) which again provided some scoring punch.

Varsity v Pioneer (74 – 41)

Varsity comfortably ousted Pioneer by 33 points in a mainly one-sided W. The uni boys set the tone early as they restricted Pioneer to a measly 5 points in the first quarter, but the determined Pioneer outfit showed they are not to be taken lightly, winning the second period 14 – 12. However, the depth of the Varsity side proved too much in the end with four players recording double figures – Ollie Crawford (22 points, 10 reb), Karl Magon (13 points, 10 reb, 7 steals, 6 assists), Daniel Mulder (10 points, 10 reb) and Harley Campbell (10 points, 3/5 3pt). Pioneer’s Tyla Harrison-Hunt provided some resistance dropping 19 points on 50% 3PT FG shooting.

Scorers were:

Gators 63 (Chris Duthie 17, Kaye McKee 15, Thomas Mulvihill 11) Atami 46 (Cam Chalmers 28), Lincoln University 94 (Nick Erwood 28, Vincent George 19, Joseph King 18) Royals 51 (Nathan Hight 10), Wolverines 94 (Oli Davies 16, Michael Karena 14, James Levings 12, Hitesh Pratap 10) North Canterbury 43 (Scott Edwards 15, Angus Forbes 10), University 74 (Ollie Crawford 22, Karl Magon 13) Pioneer (Tyla Hunt 19). Bye: Checkers.

Men’s Under 20

Nine, possibly 10 teams. are still in line for the very important top eight teams that will contest the Quarter-final play-offs on Saturday 31st August Week 16.

After seven rounds of the greatest school team competition in the country Cashmere High 12pts, Lincoln High 11, Rangiora High 11, St Andrews Coll 11, North Canterbury 11 and possibly even St Bedes College with 10 could still make the top eight to ensure the competition remains really competitive.

The grade is led by the unbeaten Middle Grange Gators with seven wins while right behind on six wins and a loss apiece are Wolverines, Ch Ch Boys High and the defending champion Burnside High.

Middleton Grange Gators shuts out Wolverines 76-68 in a top-of-the-table clash

Report from Nick Purcell – Wolverines coach

Wolverines U20 suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the well drilled Middleton Grange Gators. Middleton’s intense defence and deep bench made it tough for the eight man Wolverines squad. Through the hot shooting of Chris Johnston (20 points 5 x  3 pointers) and the typical hustle play of Aaron Gunstone (15 points, 10 in the 3rd quarter) the Wolverines pack rallied back from a 14 point deficit to trail by one going into the fourth quarter. In the end Middleton pulled away to win 76-68 led by a strong quarter from Ihaka Pink (18 points, 14 in the fourth).

Lincoln High despatches Rangiora High school 77-50

Rangiora High school in the Under 20 competition also ran victim to a strongly co-ordinated attack from Lincoln High school with the duo of James Cawthorn (29) and Stu Erskine (21) in hot form for Lincoln. After trailing 14-19 at the first break, Rangiora, through the play-making efforts of Riley Block (16) and the strong rebounding from Will Morris-Whyte, crawled back into the game to trail 30-32 by the half-time break. Cawthorn fired in 11 of his 29 points in a third-quarter rout from Lincoln as Rangiora was stifled in every move they made and outshot 26-6, trailing 36-58 by three-quarter time. Regular contributor Barclay Miller was well contained by the roaming Lincoln defence.

Burnside crushed North Canterbury 101-71

The defending champion Burnside crushed North Canterbury in the other Men’s Under 20 match at Bishopdale YMCA, winning comfortably 101-71 despite a mammoth effort from Lawson Morris-Whyte who slotted an increditable 43 points with several huge dunks.

As North Canterbury maintained a pretty tight defence, it was the sharp shooting prowess of Kyle Louis and Oliver Fairbrother, both 26 points, who carried Burnside to victory with 14 triple-point baskets between them, scored at regular intervals. North Canterbury missed the ball skills of a sick Liam Connelly while Daniel Mills grafted hard for little reward.

Gators 65 St Bedes Coll 58

St Bedes made the early running over the slower more methodical Gators with Connor McCrossin and Cole Wilson leading the St Bedes charge while tight defence forced Gators to try an aerial attack. Ben Hawthorne and Oliver Carran (18) landed back to back threes to keep Gators within touch, trailing 16-18. Ben Kroening added some more while Tarapi Neilson (15) got among the paint in the second spell as Gators finally took control in the second spell after trailing 37-42 at the mid break.

McCrossin finished with a bold 20 points while Lauchie Weston (14) also helped keep St Bedes close.

Shirley Spartens nips Aranui Academy 71-63

Aranui Academy made one of its most promising starts this season as it took on Shirley Spartens and led 21-16 by half-time through the encouraging effort of Floyd McNabb (19) and regular contributor Jarvis Ataera. As the game progressed Ricky McDonald (15) added some strong touches but pressure from the Shirley Spartens defence and some good ball control from Connor Page (24) and Patrick Rogers (12) saw the game swing in Shirley’s favour. Shirley had cut the lead to 34-37 by half-time, leveled the encounter 49-49 by the next break and slowly edged clear with Page, lethal from the charity line as well as penetrating the Aranui defence.

Christchurch Boys HS fights back to pip Cashmere HS 62-60

Cashmere lead out early taking a 19-11 first quarter lead through the efforts of Tim Jesson who notched five baskets while Nate Campbell and Scott Ralston were a little slow out of the blocks for Boys High. Cashmere held their own in the next period through the efforts of Alex Irvine (12) and Kyle Tikao but lacked consistency. Ralston closed the gap to 26-32 by half-time and Lawrence Botting stepped up as Boys High grabbed the lead 50-47 by three-quarter time. Cashmere’s Joemar Altabano (16) featured in the closing battle against the inform Ralston who finished with the healthy figures of 22 points and secured an important victory for Boys High over their long-term rivals Cashmere.

Ben Sheat- Cashmere and Canty Rep coach sent his view of the game

Yeah it was a very dark day for Cashmere basketball, very frustrating. Tim Jesson scored 18 points. Looking at the game overall Boys high wanted it more than we did. We poorly executed throughout and our defence was very poor giving up easy basket after easy basket. All credit to Boys high who had Scott Roulston dominate for them. Though, in saying that, they played much more as a team than we did. They deserved the win and it’s another big wake up call for our Cashmere boys, who along with the U17s, will be battling to make the top 8 and 6 respectively in their age groups. Tim Jesson had a season high 18 which was about one of the only positive to get out of the game.

A modest Ben Sheat failed to mention that his dangerman George Love was resting a sprained ankle

Christ’s College 73 Papanui HS 69

There would have been great celebrations in the Mann and the Duggan households, perhaps cream cakes all around, as Christ’s College scored a rare basketball victory, defeating new-comers Papanui High 73-69 but not before Papanui had staged a fighting comeback in the second spell.

Christs College teams always give their best despite overwhelming odds and a solid team effort from Louis Mann (22), Lachlan Stark (18) and Oliver Jones-Allen 17 pts paved the way for a well-earned victory. Jones-Allen and Stark set the pace for Christs while it was left to Taylor Britt (31) to weave his magic for Papanui.

Michael Newton and Harry Beadle kept the pressure on as Christs took a handy 24-13 lead by quarter-time and held on doggedly to a 44-31 half-time lead.

Louis Mann (22) stepped up the pressure on the boards at both ends while trying to control the rampant Britt. Mann received support from Alem Gebrekirstos and Michael Chu but Papanui levelled the match 56-56 by three-quarter time. Christ’s College eventually prevailed 73-69 in a tight finish, Stark adding the finishing touches for the College.

Scorers were:

Burnside HS 101 (Jahnim Campbell 26, Kyle Louis 26, Oliver Fairbrother 13, Toby Gillooly 11, Kazuki Tsukiji 10) North Canterbury 71 (Lawson Morris-Whyte 43, Anton Tuarev 10), Gators 65 (Oliver Carran 18, Tarapi Neilson 15) St Bedes Coll 58 (Connor McCrossin 20, Lauchie Weston 14, Benjamin Hood 11, Cole Wilson 11), Lincoln HS 77 (James Cawthorn 29, Stu Erskine 21, Sam Riley 11) Rangiora HS 50 (Riley Block 16, Will Morris-Whyte 12), Middleton Grange Gators 76 (Ihaka Pink 18, Regan Burnett 12, Zach Lilburne 10, Ashleigh Adamson 10, Jonny Suddens 10) Wolverines 68 (Chris Johnston 20, Jacob Fairhall 15, Hayden Murphy 15, Aaron Gunstone 15), St Andrews Coll 55 (Zac De Roo 17) Pioneer Pacers 38 (Nick Kwant 13, William Brown 13), Shirley Spartens 71 (Connor Page 24, Patrick Rogers 12, Will Grocott 10) Aranui Academy 63 (Floyd McNabb 19, Ricky McDonald 15, Javis Ataera 13), Christchurch Boys HS 62 (Scott Ralston 22, Nathan Campbell 10) Cashmere HS 60 (Tim Jesson 18, Joemar Altabano 16, Alex Irvine 12, Kyle Tikao 10), Christ’s College73 (Louis Mann 22, Lachlan Stark 18, Oliver Jones-Allen 17) Papanui HS 69 (Taylor Britt 31, Alem Gebrekirstos 12).

Shirley Spartens repulsed Burnside Green 89-70

Shirley Spartens repulsed a strong challenge from the Burnside Green development team winning 89-70. After a tight first–quarter, Shirley pulled away in the second period to lead 45-28 but a tenacious Burnside Green with a number of promising players including Toby Gillooly (37 pts) and Lewis Baker-McMillan (22) kept honours even in the second spell.

Jake Simpson (22) and Patrick Rogers (21) led the early response for Shirley while Connor Page (14) led the Shirley challenge in the second spell.

Burnside White thumps Middleton Grange White 114-34

Burnside White with Oliver Fairbrother (39) and Kyle Louis (20) in control raced to a comfortable victory over Middleton Grange White. Burnside High, the defending champion, is well placed for a double title this season while its main opposition will again come from Middleton Green machine and a vastly improved Shirley Boys team.

St Bedes Coll fightbacks to edge out Christ’s Coll 55-54

There was nearly a double celebration for the brave Christs College U17 team and its many supporters as it succumbed to a strong last quarter fightback from St Bedes College to be pipped 54-55 in the late game at the Bishopdale Y on Saturday.

Ollie Weston (15) led the charge for St Bedes with capable backup from Jack Hodgins and Jaiden-Lee Manera, both 13points while the Christs college efforts where driven by strong performances from Michael Newton (16) and  Matthew Boyce 14 pts.  Lachlan Stark led the Christs team by example controlling the sides many moves.

In the other two matches St Andrews College consolidated a fifth placing in the 11 team competition with a comfortable 84-45 win over debutants Papanui High while out at St Bedes gym on a cool damp morning Middleton Grange Green cruised to a strong 94-24 win over Cashmere Gold to keep in touch with Burnside High White.

Scorers were:

Shirley Spartens 89 (Jake Simpson 22, Patrick Rogers 21, Connor Page 14)  Burnside Green 70 (Toby Gillooly 37, Lewis Baker-McMillan 22), Burnside White 114 (Oliver Fairbrother 39, Kyle Louis 20, Kazuki Tsukiji 17, Matt Lake 12) Middleton Grange White 34 (Lewis Seo 10), Middleton Grange Green  (Sam Riley , Sam Lees , Zach Faige , Amosa Faitaia-Nanai )  Cashmere Gold ,  St Bedes Coll 55 (Ollie Weston 15, Jack Hodgins 13, Jaiden-Lee Manera 13) Christ’s Coll 54 (Michael Newton 16, Matthew Boyce 14, Lachlan Stark 10) St Andrews Coll 84 (Jayden Chan 26, Ben Collerton  14, Ben Cushing 14) Papanui HS 45 (Tane October 14). Bye: Ch Ch BHS.

Formats: Men’s U17 (11 or 12 Teams), one team recently dropped out)

Women’s Division One/Under 20

Royals, the 2009 champion side very much still together under matriarch Cathy Hyland remained the only unbeaten team after six games in the combined WD1/U20 competition after despatching arch-rival Minties 56-31 last Sunday.

The defending champion Checkers accounted for Gators 73-43 and shares the lead with Royals on 12 points but has recorded 5 wins, 2 loses to date.

Checkers 2/2 and Royals 3/0 also share the lead in the individual section of the WD1 first round points.

The defending U20 champion University holds third place on 11 points in the combined grade but has a deferred game against Pioneer Pacers to catch up.

Rangi Ruru easily accounted for Halswell U20 on Sunday winning 70-39.

The Halswell U20 side leads the WU20 part of the first round but has finished its games against the other teams in the same grade with a 3-2 record and 8 points, followed by Rangi Ruru 3-1 and 7 points while University 3-0 and 6 points has the game in hand in third place.  See charts below.

A second round robin with teams in their respective grades starts on Week 12, on August 4th, after the July 21 & 28 holiday breaks.

Scores were:

Royals 56 Minties 31, Halswell WD1 50 Pioneer Red (CGHS) 48, Rangi Ruru 70 Halswell U20 39, Checkers 73 Gators 43. Deferred game: University v Pioneer Pacers. Bye: Cashmere HS.

Formats: Women’s Division 1 (5 Teams) & Women’s U20 (6 Teams)

These two grades will combine for the first 11 weeks. The first 11 weeks will run as a Round Robin. The grades will then split for the remainder of the season. The next five weeks will be played within their own grade as a round robin competition. Week 17 will be the Div 1 semi-finals and U20 semi-finals on Sunday Sept 15th, and Week 18 will be the Grand finals for Div 1 & U20 on Saturday 21st September, each team playing for their respective Championship Trophies. Please note, points carry over from round one to round two for games played between teams from the same grade (i.e. WDiv 1 v WDiv 1 games; not WU20 v WDiv1).

Mid-week Men

Double defending champion and Top-of-the-table University defeats Raiders 56-44

Derek Watson of Raiders supplied this report – Thanks Derek

Was a typical game for us against University. We have to play a physical game to keep them close. Dave (Baird) quickly become our man to pressure as he was looking dangerous early on. Uni pulled away on us in the second half as our shooting went cold then we started coming back, way too late though.

The Bishops 117 Special Olympics 104

Craig Bennett slotted 40 points, many with his trademark end for end dribble and lay-up for the Special O team against The Bishops in an extremely high scoring encounter last Wednesday evening, considering it was only an hour long (2x26min half) game. Simon Megget (39) got inside the Special O defence while Jack McDougall (36) splashed numerous outside shots. The game was close until the closing few minutes when The Bishops applied pressure to pull clear.

Pioneer comes from behind to beat Royals 56-49

Alex Kelliher (24) and Mark Valentine (15) made inroads to an early Royals lead to see their side Pioneer escape to a handy 56-49. James McPherson replied with 17 points for Royals but loss of accuracy under strong defence cost Royals dearly its chances in the second spell.

Scorers were:

The Bishops 117 (Simon Megget 39, Jack McDougall 36, Corey Crump 24) Special Olympics 104 (Craig Bennett 40, Tracey Thompson 14, Jason Roberts 12, Bradley Garner 12, Carlton Vivian 10), Burnham 65 Lincoln University 22, Checkers White 58 (Nigel Buchanan 17, Paul Isitt 15, Gordon Hayward 11) Sphinx 51 (Yang Li 22, James Taylor 13), Bandits 62 Goauld 43,

University 56 Raiders 44, Pioneer 56 (Alex Kelliher 24, Mark Valentine 15) Royals 49 (James McPherson 17, Sam Sloane 13).

Format: Midweek Men (12 Teams)

This competition will hold an 11 week Round Robin. The top 6 and the bottom 6 will split out for the next 5 weeks of Round Robin play, playing for positioning. Week 17 will hold the following three separate semi-final competitions: 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3, 5 vs. 8, 6 vs. 7, 9 vs. 12, and 10 vs. 11. Finals will be held in Week 18 with all teams participating. Please note, points do not carry over from round one to round two.

Goauld, a new deaf club team, has heavy games against top placed teams over the next three rounds so will have great difficulty breaking into the Top six while new entry, Sphinx, with a slightly easier road maybe have a chance of breaking the barrier by upsetting The Bishops whose form has been up and down this season. Raiders, a previous three times winner, has a difficult game against another three times winner Checkers White coming up but has easier opposition in its other two games so should be safe in the top six.

Mid- week Women Cup Finals

The defending champion Halswell Red wrapped up the first round Cup Final, demolishing a lack-lustre CYA 58-17 in Cowles Stadium last Wednesday evening. Besides the strong running play of Gina Papahadjis (17) the Halswell Red side contains numerous former representative players including Tracey Buchanan, Jo Mumm, Sue Bennie and Fiona Booth. Aly Rooney and Belinda Campbell stepped up for CYA in the absence of their leader Carmel Gunn.

The other play-off matches were much more closer with Checkers edging out University 25-24 in a point for point battle while Royals took a long time to gain an edge over a determined Halswell Green side before winning 38-34.

In the battle to avoid the wooden spoon between the two new entrants Hi-Rollers, led by a sound 24 points from Aria Café pulled clear of Pioneer 49-30.

Scorers were:

Cup Final: Halswell Red 58 (Gina Papahadjis 17) CYA 17,

Play-off for 3rd: Checkers 25 (Katelin Russ 12) University 24 (Chrissey Bell 7),

Play-off 5th: Royals 38 (Lesley Dick 6, Denise Ryan 6, Francis Menzies 6) Halswell Green 24 (Debbie Bryant 8),

Play-off 7th place: Hi-Rollers 49 (Aria Café 24) Pioneer 30 (Amie Dawson 12).

Formats:Midweek Women (8 Teams)

This competition will be split into two distinct competitions. The first half of the season will hold a 7 week Round Robin. Week 8 will be the finals based on team standings, in which team in the 1st position will play team in position 2, team 3 vs. 4, team 5 vs. 6, team 7 vs. 8. The second half of the season will hold a 7 week round robin, followed by quarter finals in week 16. The semi-finals & consolation semi-finals will be held in week 17. The finals will be held in week 18, playing for the Championship trophy.   Please note, points do not carry over from round one to round two.
