Men’s Premier Championship

Lincoln University showed that they will be a side not to under-estimated as the championship section of the Men’s Premier grade club basketball commenced on Saturday in Cowles Stadium. Lincoln challenged the defending champion Checkers all the way, forcing extra-time, locked at 74-74 before Checkers clinched victory 85-83 as the students missed several scoring chances in the hectic closing seconds.

Atami, which has appeard in all championship finals over the last decade, demolished University 81-40 while Wolverines repulsed a strong third-quarter come-back from Gators to escape to a 62-57 victory.

Checkers 85 Lincoln University 83 in extra-time

Checkers have been struggling for continuity in the absence of Ethan Rusbatch on NBL duties with New Plymouth and his brother, Bede Marsters, out for the season with a broken leg. While the experienced Nat Connell dominated the Checkers defensive boards with 15 rebounds, it was Pip Johnston that weaved through tight Lincoln defence to slot 28 points for Checkers including two vital free throws in the extra period. Ben Teale returned to play alongside his former Royals team-mates with 15 points and six rebounds, Ben Van Oosten added 13 and 10 rebounds while the elusive Connell added a key 18 points.

Nick Erwood graduated from Burnside High school, and now on scholarship at Lincoln University, continues to blossom in the game, defending strongly and punishing the offensive boards to compile 23 points and 13 rebounds in addition to the 29 points and 11 rebounds for his Under 23 team earlier in the day. James Cawthorn was tightly marked, restricted to 13 points while Aled Jones controlled the tempo of the game for the students with masterly ease.

Wolverines beats Gators 62-57

Wolverines started very strongly against a disorganised Gators team, which was missing Jeremy Kench, pulling clear to lead 21-13 by the first break through the efforts of Lionel Hopgood and Dean Le Wane while Joel Stratford made a welcome return after a long injury break. Gators came back with a better third-quarter through the efforts of the masterly Chris Duthie (15 pts, seven rebounds)  while Kaye McKee and Alex Jellie also made their presence felt.

Coach extraordinaire Jamie Graham adds his side of the game report.

Men's Prem got off to a great start to the Championship round with a hard fought victory over Gators 62 - 57. Lionel Hopgood (17pts, 12reb) dominated inside with the help of veteran Dean Le Warne who showed the young Gators team he still has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Michael Kinley (13pts) shot well from the outside as well as taking on the defensive duties of marking Chris Duthie.
The game saw the welcome return of sharp shooter Joel Stratford returning after a year off with a torn ACL. Joel helped spark the defensive effort grabbing five steals.

Atami crushes University 81-40

Atami opened strongly, jumping to a 22-8 lead against a depleted University. Ritchie Howell found good rhythm in the second quarter while Rusty Thompson ran the perimeter to pick up the slack. University’s Brent Fisher found a few gaps in the Atami defence but once the gaps were closed Atami continued to pull clear as Paul McFarlin and Scott Howell added to the Atami scoreline.

Scorers were:

Atami 81 (Rusty Thomson 23, Ritchie Howell 21, Paul McFarlin 17, Scott Howell 14) University 40 (Brent Fisher 10, Sam Crozier 10). HT: 35-24. Checkers 85 (Pip Johnston 28, Nat Connell 18, 15R, Ben Teale 13, Ben Van Oosten 13, 10R) Lincoln University 83 (Nick Erwoood 23, 13R, James Cawthorne 13, Aled Jones 10, 7R, Isaac Williams 10, 8R). HT: 43-41. Wolverines 62 (Lionel Hopgood 17, 12R, Michael Kinley 16) Gators 57 (Chris Duthie 15, 7R, Alex Jellie 12, 10R, Kaye McKee 12, 7R). HT: 32-23.

Men’s Division One

Wolverines beats University 80-60 with master coach Jamie Graham reporting

The Div one boys had their first real challenge of the year, a top of the table match against Varsity. Varsity had the better of the Pack in 2012 being the only team they couldn't beat in three attempts. Some much needed payback was due and the boys didn't disappoint.
Wolves where up just one at the end of the first quarter 23-22 with some average defence. But in the 2nd quarter they lifted their defensive intensity and executed their offence superbly outscoring Varsity 26 - 13 to take a 14 point half time lead.
Wolverines continued the pressure in the 2nd half and never let up, going on to win 80 - 60.
Paul Havill led the way scoring 21pts with Carl Willocks adding 16pts and Nick Purcell 15pts.

Placemakers Wolves outpaces North Canterbury 77-55

The Costley brothers, Gareth (13), Fraser (14) and Cameron (14) turned up the pressure on North Canterbury and the points flowed. Placemakers, the defending champion, retaining their unbeaten status after five games to defeat North Canterbury 77-55 and has won the title four times in the last five seasons, often coming back from badly placed position on the table.

Meanwhile the 2010 champion Wolverines leads the grade with 12 points unbeaten from six games. Atami and University are other top contenders with nine points each from five appearances.

Scorers were:

Wolverines 80 (Paul Havill 21, Carl Willocks 16, Nick Purcell 15) University 60 (Joe Hammond 19, Jamie Tomars 14 ), Placemakers 77  (Fraser Costley 14, Cameron Costley 14, Gareth Costley 13, Sam Evans 11, Josh Manning 11) North Canterbury55 (Angus Gourlay 19),  Checkers 61Gators 53,  Atami 90  (Andy Baird 16, Jamie Fitzsimmons 14, Paul Cameron 13) Canterbury U19 55 (Ben Hood 11, Louis Mann 10, Ashleigh Adamson 10), Pioneer Yellow 71 Pioneer Blue 51.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

Gators and Wolverines maintained their lead at the top-of-the-table on 12 points, both unbeaten from six wins after seven rounds. Wolverines came back in the final quarter to edge University 64-60 inside the last few minutes while Gators had the bye. Atami, the defending Cup competition winner maintains a share off the lead on 12 points but has yet to have the bye and has suffered two loses. Lincoln University moved up the ladder after upsetting the defending Championship winner Checkers, both teams now share fourth place on 10 points but Lincoln have played one fewer games.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday morning’s action in Cowles stadium.

Wolverines v Varsity (64 – 60)

The return of US-based 6’9” centre Michael Karena sparked a come-from-behind victory for the unbeaten Wolverines unit against a very determined Varsity side. The Wolfpack got off to a slow start, only managing 8 points in the first quarter to Varsity’s 16. The students maintained their 8 point buffer going into half time, thanks to a 17-point first half scoring blitz by Varsity captain Rowan Feeney and a great job defensively on Karena by the ever consistent Ollie Crawford. However, the young Wolves team clawed their way back into the game in the third after a timeout called by Coach Jamie Graham which contained unsavoury language not even fit for those who have seen Snakes on a Plane. The Varsity boys still led by 6 at the start of the fourth, but momentum had shifted, as the boys in blue lifted their defensive intensity. With less than 2 minutes to go, NBA camp-bound Shou Nisbet hit a trey to give the Wolverines squad their first lead of the game. Oli Davies (16 points) sealed the win with some clutch FT shooting down the stretch. Karena finished with 15 points, and Wolves centre Kieran Ball had 12 points, 13 boards and 5 blocks. For Varsity, Feeney ended up with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Crawford posted a monster stat line of 23 points and 20 rebounds.

Lincoln University v Checkers (60 – 57)

The Lincoln Bulls ground out a tough win against a pesky Checkers side, 60 – 57. LU only had 7 active players, including a hobbled Raghav Pratap, who is still recovering from a torn labrum, not dissimilar to the injury of Dwight Howard. The game was tight throughout, with LU winning the first two quarters but Checkers fighting back to win the last two. However, it was not enough as LU’s Nick Erwood, known as Nerwood5 to many of his peers, posted yet another double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds, and centre Sam Dixon took advantage of a smaller Checkers lineup to add another 14 points. For Checkers, the scoring was pretty even – swingman Isaac Silberry the only player to notch up double figures with 19 points.

Royals v Pioneer (87 – 79)

The matchup between the two cellar dwelling teams in the competition proved to be a thrilling one as Royals trumped Pioneer 87 – 79. In what was essentially a back and forth game between Royals’ captain Simon Hodgson (35 points) and Pioneer’s Tyla Harrison-Hunt (31 points), the game was decided in the final period as Royals only led by 1 heading into the fourth quarter, 64 – 63. However, some lackadaisical transition D by Pioneer allowed Royals to pull away in the final stages of the game. Royals’ Josh Olds notched up 12 points and for Pioneer, swingman E.J. Hamilton added 17 points and ex-Cashmere student Jimmy Davis another 10.

North Canterbury v Atami (34 – 69)

After a series of slow starts, the Atami boys finally got going against NC early, running out to a 17 – 7 first quarter lead. A defensively stingy second period by Atami saw NC only post 5 points, while Atami stretched the lead out to 23, with the half time score reading 12 – 35. The guard-heavy Atami team (missing captain Alex Dobbs out with a high ankle sprain) finally ran out 34 – 69 victors against an NC side missing its leading scorer in Daine Parata. A slightly altered Big 3 for Atami once again provided over 75% of the points – Cam Chalmers (23), Bryn McLennan (16) and Callan Tucker (14). For North Canterbury, the consistent swingman Scott Edwards added 13 points but was fouled out during the game.

Scorers were:

Atami 69 (Cam Chalmers 23, Bryn McLennan 16, Callan Tucker 14) North Canterbury 34 (Scott Edwards 13), Royals 87 (Simon Hodgson 35,  Josh Olds 12) Pioneer 79 (Tyla Hunt 31, EJ Hamilton 17, James Davis 10), Lincoln University 60 (Nick Erwood 29, 11R, Sam Dixon 14) Checkers 57 (Isaac Silberry 19, 9R), Wolverines 64 (Oli Davies 16, Michael Karena 15, Kieran Ball 12, 13R, 5 blocks) University 60 (Ollie Crawford 23, Rowan Freeney 21).  Bye: Gators.

Men’s Under 20

Bragging rights in the Men’s Under 20 grade will be settled this Saturday when Middleton Grange Gators clashes with Wolverines, both unbeaten after six rounds. The game is scheduled for 11.30am at Cowles stadium so all eyes will be focused on this game. Hopefully there will be no draw change.

Cashmere High, ChCh Boys and the defending champion Burnside High are one point (one loss) adrift in third place while North Canterbury and Rangiora High share 6th place having had two losses each.

St Bede’s and St Andrew’s Colleges along with Lincoln High are in the middle of the pack, fighting for the all-important top 8 placing with three wins, three losses to their name.

Wolverines defeats Pioneer 63-46 with master coach Jamie Graham reporting.

Wolverines U20 took a while to get going against a determined Pioneer side. Through the best part of three quarters they were outhustled by the much smaller Pioneer unit. In the end Wolverines pulled clear to win 63-46 thanks to a late flurry from Chris Johnston (21) and some great cuts to the basket by Sam Chadwick. The boys know they will have to up their game significantly when they meet Middleton Grange next week.

Cashmere outpaces North Canterbury 93-67

Alex Irvine turned on one of his top performances of the season to date with a polished 23 points to pave the way for success of the strong North Canterbury side. Irvine sunk several good baskets and as he was fouled going for more, clocked up numerous free throws to push Cashmere ahead 17-11 by quarter-time. Sam Oldroyd, George Love and Kyle Tikao all added to the Cashmere strength before Love sprained an ankle.

Liam Connelly tried to keep North Canterbury in touch with the unstoppable Cashmere side, slotting three triples in the first half on the way to compiling 27 valuable points while Jordan De Winter and Daniel Mills did more of the ground work.

Cashmere had extended its lead to 45-25 by half-time but the pressure eased in the final quarter with stronger efforts from De Winter and Callum Ross for North Canterbury found some openings in the absence of the tall Love.

Rangiora High holds off a late challenge from Gators to win 52-45

Barclay Millar lead the Rangiora efforts in the opening quarter, taking Rangiora to a 19-11 lead but the Gators club side, with only one win under its belt this season, came back strongly to find chinks in Rangiora’s defence. Stephen Collins and Oliver Carran slotted good baskets and tighter defence by Gators slowed the scoring with Rangiora ahead 34-23 at half-time. Gators continued to threaten Rangiora’s lead, forcing many turnovers much to the concern of the two Rangiora coaches. Miller closed the game out for Rangiora with 19 points with a number of free throws late in the game.

ChCh Boys High races away from Aranui Academy 98-58

Nathan Campbell towered above the Aranui side, slotting a hard-earned 28 points from all around the basket as his Boys’ High team pulled out to a comfortable 28-16 lead by quarter-time but Aranui, led by the Ataera brothers Jarvis (16) and Javan (10), arrested the momentum leaving Boys high ahead 46-31 at the half-time interval. From there the points flowed in the second spell with Tom Davison and Lawrence Botting making good use of the extra court time while Hayden Lee and Floyd McNabb made strong efforts for the Academy.

Middleton Grange Gators 101 Christs College 38

Teenage National representative Zach Lilburne set the pace for MGG as it set about demolishing Christs College with its fast flowing game. Lilburne squeezed through the College defence to slot six baskets as Middleton cleared out to a 24-10 first-quarter lead and added more by running in 27-5 in the second quarter as the lead was extended to 51-15 by half-time. Ashleigh Adamson and Ihaka Pink added another 17 points each to add to Gators effectiveness in the second half. Lauchie Weston (12) and Connor McCrossin stood out for the College.

St Andrews pips Papanui High 69-63

St Andrews repulsed a strong challenge from the ever-improving Papanui High, holding off a strong fourth-quarter fightback to win 69-63. Nick Symon dominated the boards while Jayden Chan set the moves for St Andrews while Taylor Britt was all around the court, splashing 37 points with every twist and turn of his body.

Shirley accounts for Christ’s College 59-37.

Shirley received a strong wake-up call from Christ’s College as the College came back strongly in the third-quarter to close the gap to 35-30 but Connor Page led the great Shirley escape in the final quarter, finishing with 15 points as Shirley extended its led 24-6 in the final period of play to take the game 59-37.

Scorers were:

Burnside HS 82 (Shou Nisbett 21, Jahnim Campbell 18, Logan Woodill 12, Oliver Fairbrother 10) Lincoln HS 75 (Stu Erskine 29, James Cawthorn 14, Sam Riley 14), Rangiora HS 52 (Barclay Miller 19) Gators 45(Oliver Carran 20), Middleton Grange Gators 101 (Zach Lilburne 22, Ihaka Pink 17, Ashleigh Adamson 17) St Bedes Coll 38 (Lauchie Weston 12), Shirley Spartens 59 (Connor Page 15, Patrick Roger 12) Christ’s College37 (Olliver Jones-Allen 16), St Andrews Coll 69 (Nick Symon 23, Jayden Chan 19) Papanui HS 63 (Taylor Britt 37), Christchurch Boys HS 98 (Nathan Campbell 28, Joshua Campbell 18, Tom Davison 12) Aranui Academy 58 (Jarvis Ataera 16, Javan Ataera 10, Floyd McNabb 12, Hayden Lee 12), Wolverines 63 (Chris Johnston 21, Jacob Fairhall 13, Hayden Murphy 10) Pioneer Pacers 46 (Karesse Lavery 8, Jamie Wright 8, William Brown 8), Cashmere HS 93 (Alex Irvine 23, Kyle Tikao 17, George Love 15, Sam Oldroyd 14) North Canterbury 67 (Liam Connelly 27, Daniel Mills 13, Jordan De Winter 13).

Boy’s Under 17

Burnside White despatches St Bedes 84-34

Burnside White, the defending champion maintained its iron-tight grasp on the U17 competition, dispatching St Bedes 84-34 with ease. Burnside High co-ordinator, Lesley McLaughlin, is proudly looking to a double repeat as both her school teams are at or near the top of the ladder, ready to defend their 2012 titles.

Oliver Fairbrother, who also fronts for the schools U20 side, got quickly up to speed, dominating the boards at both ends while racking up 31 points with support from Blake Alps and Kyle Louis. By the first break Burnside where miles in front, up 33-2 before relaxing and started to use its bench. Jaiden-Lee Manera stood out for St Bede’s with Ollie Weston and Josh Donnelly finding small gaps in the Burnside defence.

Gators Green edged out Shirley Spartens 86-71

Two other contenders for honours in the development grade this season Shilrey and Middleton green slogged out a thrilling encounter in the Bishopdale Y on Saturday and after the dust had settled it was Middleton that emerged the victor 86-71.

Amosa Faitaia-Nanai (19) and Sam Riley (17) did the hard work early for Middleton with some handy baskets while Sam Riley and Andrew Nicholson helped push Middleton ahead as Shirley threatened to take the game.

Conner Page found small gaps in the Gators defence to get Shirley’s challenge started while Will Grocott and Jake Simpson added extra punch as Shirley got back in the game.

Both Shirley and Middleton Green share second place in the competition with one loss apiece.

Stac thumps Middleton White 66-43

Jayden Chan is already showing advanced skills of his older brother Dan the Man and fresh from slotting a key 19 points for the Colleges U20 side he was back mesmerising the Middleton White team with a solid range of ball skills, adding another 25 points with deceptive ease. Ben Collerton also helped to push St Andrew’s to a 17-8 first-quarter lead while Ben Cushing added several more baskets but Middleton pulled back some baskets of their own through the work of Pedro Langilangi and Tim Barnes, reducing the gap to 21-25 by half time.

The flood gates opened in the second half and St Andrews pulled away comfortably with Chan in full flight. Lewis Seo slotted most of his valuable 13 points for Middleton in the second spell.

ChCh Boys 72 Papanui 51

Sajad Ahmadzadah gave Papanui a good start off with three handy baskets  but Boys’ High replied quickly through the efforts of Quinn Clinton and Jack Ansell, pulling to a 24-16 first break lead and extending it to 45-28 by half-time. Michael Knopick added more strong baskets as Boys’ High pulled clear in the second spell.

Burnside Green 86 Christs College 86-41

Lewis Baker-McMillan and Toby Gillooly got Burnside green under way with some sound baskets but hard work from Lachlan Stark and Matthew Boyce for Christ’s College ensured Burnside was held to a 16-13 lead at quarter-time. The flood gates then opened with Baker-McMillan (28) and Gillooly (31) scoring at ease and tighter defence restricted the Christ’s College scoring.

Scorers were:

Middleton Grange Green 86 (Sam Lees 19, Amosa Faitaia-Nanai 19, Sam Riley 17) Shirley Spartens 71 (Will Grocott 19, Connor Page 14, Jake Simpson 14, Patrick Rogers 10),  St Andrews Coll 66 (Jayden Chan 25, Ben Cushing 13, Ben Collerton 10) Middleton Grange White 43 (Lewis Seo 13),  Burnside White 84 (Oliver Faorbrother 31, Kyle Louis 19, Blake Alps 18) St Bedes Coll 34 (Jaiden-Lee Manera 8, Ollie Weston 8), Ch Ch Boys HS 72 (Michael Knopick 15, Jack Ansell 14, Quinn Clinton 11) Papanui HS 51 (Alem Gebrekirstoss 15, Tane October 11), Burnside Green 86 (Toby Gillooly 31, Lewis Baker-McMillan 28, Isaac Gilpin 10) Christ’s Coll 41(Michael Newton 11), Cashmere Gold 20 Cashmere Maroon  0 by default.

Women’s Division One/Under 20

Recap from Pina Lissaman for Royals 69 Gators 35.

Gators started out strong with some good outside shooting and drives to the basket, this saw them take the lead after the first quarter by two. Play then turned scrappy and Gators lost their composure and racked up a technical foul and accidentally broke a Royal’s players nose. Cool heads and experience from the Royals team were too much for the under manned Gators, with Royals comfortably winning 69 – 35.

The Canterbury Wildcats assistant coach Pina Lissaman practiced what she teaches with a well compiled 22 points, rebounding strongly while Candice Costley followed her husband and brothers-in-law’s lead from earlier in the day to drive through lack-lustre defence to slot 18. Hannah Manning replied with 14 points for Gators.

The defending U20 champion University leads the combined grade with 11 points after it comfortably beat Rangi Ruru 74-44 while Royals, containing many of the 2009 champion side shares second place on 10 points with the defending WD1 champion Checkers but Royals is unbeaten with a game in hand. Halswell U20 remained ahead of its parent side Halswell WD1 with a solid 88-23 win over Cashmere High and Haslwell WD1 accounted for Pioneer Pacers 66-33.

After a combined round robin over 11 weeks the grade will divide into their separate sections with the games between the teams in the same competition counting as the first round with points carrying over into a second round robin.

Mid-week Men

The defending champion University tightened its grip on the Mid-week Men’s competition with a solid 71-43 win over the new (Deaf) club entry Goauld, coached by Jake LaBerge. Led by the evergreen David Baird, the students waltzed through the Goauld defence to win 71-43 in the Graham Condon Centre.

It a very tight match Burnham edged out The Bishops 54-52.

The highly athletic Nigel Buchanan leapt all around the court like a spring chicken, grabbing 17 points to lead Checkers White to a comfortable 76-37 win over Pioneer. Raiders, determined to make the Top 6 split, repulsed a strong challenge from the new entry Sphinx to win 50-35.

In a scrappy game Bandits pulled away with a strong second half effort to down Lincoln University 62-37 after only leading 32-26 at the break and consolidate a share of second place with Checkers White and Burnham.

Mid- week Women Cup Competition

The defending champion Halswell Red should have too much depth for arch-rivals CYA in this Wednesday’s Mid-week Women’s Cup Final. The speedy Gina Papahadjis ran in 37 effortless points as Halswell hammered Checkers 90-19 last Wednesday. CYA had a steady 82-40 over a gritty and determined Hi-Rollers with livewire Carmel Gunn picking up much loose ball to slot 34 points while Ingrid Kaptein found an extra wind slotting 20 later in the game. Olly Nicholas steadied the Hi-Rollers with 15 points with a regular14 point contribution from Aria Cafe. University slowly edged clear of Halswell Green in a tight battle to claim third placing with a narrow 30-24 win.

Royals rebounded strongly and shot more accurately as it defeated Pioneer 49-15.
