Men’s Premier Hoben Trophy Final

Atami retains Hoben Trophy

Atami, the leading team in the Men’s Premier club basketball competition for much of the decade, wrapped up its third successive Alan Hoben trophy with a sound 74-62 win over the steadily improving Gators in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

Atami were well aware of the fast attacking style of Gators that it had beaten comfortably in the first round by 22 points, so quickly took the game to Gators, pulling out to a handy 18-11 first-quarter lead. Paul McFarlin opened the scoring early for Atami followed by back-to-back baskets to Richie Howell who drove strongly through lack-lustre defence. Atami had a fairly tight defence forcing the outside shot from Gators with Jeremy Kench slotting a basket then a triple pointer as Atami threatened to run away with the final.

Gators, a club that looks to be challenging for a Men’s Premier/Under 23 double this season, lifted its intensity in the next two periods of play with little change to the lead. Atami had pulled to a 35-22 lead (15 Pts) nearing half-time but Kaye McKee steadied Gators efforts with several baskets to reduce the deficit to 31-37 at the break. In the second spell, Paul McFarlin splashed several threes for Atami and Kench added to his 14 point tally for Gators. Howell and McFarlin both finished with 15 points while Nathan Hyde worked hard at both ends of the court for Atami, picking up nine points and 13 big rebounds. For Gators Chris duthie was contained to eight points but managed 11 rebounds and the spring-healed Matt Stevenson was shut out, managing just two baskets.

Wolverines takes revenge on Checkers in extra-time 103-95

Wolverines avenged their loss last week to beat Checkers 103 – 95 in the third place play-off game, but it took overtime to do it. It was a great Wolverines team effort with five players hitting double figures and the match tied 87-87 at full time.

In the re-match with Checkers, Lionel Hopgood (20pts) and new recruit Mike Karena (19pts) dominated inside the paint as Mike Kinley (22pts) and Oli Davies (17pts) executed the fast break which was lacking in last week’s game. Wolverines found themselves down by four at half time (39-43) but a big third-quarter saw them outscore last year's champions 30 - 19 to head into the fourth up by seven (69-62). Nat Connell (32pts) for Checkers lead the charge to get his team back into the game and with only a  couple of minutes left in regulation time the Wolves found themselves down 85 – 79 when super sub James Levings (12pts) hit two straight 3's to help send the game into extra period. From there, Wolverines took control of the game outscoring Checkers 16 - 8 in OT to secure the victory.

Connell slotted an elusive 32 points for Checkers with support from former NBL team-mate Ben Van Oosten (16) and Pip Johnston with 12.

Lincoln University downs the University of Canterbury 71-55

Lincoln University also reversed a first round 71-75 loss to Canterbury University powering away with a strong third-quarter to eventually prevail 71-55 in the 5th/6th place match.

Pat Fraser (11) led Lincoln’s challenge against the University of Canterbury Team with authority, setting the moves and distributing the ball to eager hands. Nick Erwood was all over the court slotting 14 points and grabbing six boards against the taller University defence. Marty Davison  had 14 points and nine rebounds and Brent Fisher (10 pts, 8 rebounds) kept UC the gam, but a strong third-quarter from Lincoln saw them out point their  Canterbury counter-parts 21-9 to take a controlling 59-41 lead at the third break.

Scorers were:

Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy Final

Halswell claims the Patron’s trophy

Halswell, one of the oldest clubs in the competition, claimed its first title for many seasons when it defeated long-term champion University 34-30 in the Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy Final.

Halswell came-of-age with a narrow 34-30 win over University in a Final that lacked intrigue and tight defence. Becky Falloon got inside the students defences early with three baskets and a free throw top lead Halswell to a 12-5 first-quarter lead before a stunned University could reply. With both sides maintaining tight defence, coupled with a few too many turnovers the final meandered along as University slowly came back to trail 12-14 by the half-time interval.

Both sides were missing key injured Wildcats players but Rosanna Katene (10pts and 14 rebounds), another Wildcat, pushed hard for University to lead her side to overcome Halswell several times in the second spell and the former Patron’s and club looked set to win another title.

Tash Van Vuuren, playing alongside her mother, Marinda started the last quarter well for Halswell, Anna Williams put Halswell back in front 29-27, Ashlee Rigter sunk two free throws for University to regain the lead three minutes from time. Teenager Jess Ling got Halswell back in front in the hectic last couple of minutes with Marinda Van Vureen sealing the game for her Halswell side from the free throw line a few seconds from time.

Lincoln University outpoints Minties 72-63

Lincoln University out-pointed the 2010 Patron’s trophy winner Minties 72-63 to claim third placing while Pioneer, with a strong first and third quarters, proved too strong for Gators to take the fifth placing match 57-40.

In a fast open running game Lincoln pulled out to a 27-20 first-quarter lead through the efforts of Bridgette Lawn and Fran Edmondson while Hayley Gray and Gemma Hazeldene had to work hard to install confidence in the Minties challenge. After a tight second–quarter, Minties made a small inroad into Lincoln’s lead, closing the gap to 53-58 by the third break. Hazeldene rattled in 27 points for Minties but her moves were much more tightly controlled in the final period as Lincoln matched Minties’ desperate late challenge. The Wildcat captain Shea Crotty put her body through narrowing gaps to slot her hard-earned 18 points for Lincoln while Gray finished with 18 for Minties.

Pioneer takes fifth beating Gators 57-40

Pioneer raced to an early 21-10 lead against Gators while Beth Wyatt responded for Gators to see her side close the gap to 27-30 by half-time. Connie Dick and Abby Rutledge led the Pioneer challenge to regain control with a strong third-quarter. Kimberley Heron (13) stood out for Gators.

Scorers were:

Patron’s Trophy Final: Halswell 34 (Becky Falloon 7) University 30 (Rosanna Katene 10, 14R). HT: 14-12.

Play-off 3rd place: Lincoln University 72 (Fran Edmondson 18, Shea Crotty 18, Bailey McDougall 10) Minties 63 (Gemma Hazeldene 27, Hayley Gray 18). HT: 42-35.

Play-off 5th place: Pioneer 57 (Connie Dick 12, Abby Rutledge 12) Gators 40 (Kimberley Heron 13). HT: 30-27.

Men’s Division One

There was no Men’s Division one played on Sunday due to the Globetrotters playing in Cowles stadium.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

Gators edged two points clear at the top-of-the-table unbeaten with six wins while Wolverines has five from five with the bye on Saturday. The gap has tightened with Atami (4-2) slipping into a share of second place but has played six games. Checkers 9 pts, Lincoln University 8 pts and University 7 points make up the top six although the latter two have a game in hand.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday’s action in Cowles stadium.

Atami v Pioneer (69 – 44)

After a horrific first quarter, at the end of which Pioneer lead 8 – 19, the Atami boys woke up and withstood a determined Pioneer outfit, pulling away for a 69 – 44 W. It was the 3rd quarter where the game was won – Atami ran their full court press leading to some easy transition baskets, while Pioneer only managed a mere 4 points in the period. As it seems to be the trend, Atami’s ‘Big 3’ – Cam Chalmers (18), Alex Dobbs (18) and Bryn McLennan (13) – once again provided the bulk of the scoring. For Pioneer, athletic swingman E.J. Hamilton dropped 12 points, while the consistent Tyla Harrison-Hunt added another 10.

Gators v Lincoln University (87 – 55)

“Too big. Too Strong” were the words of choice in which scholarship player Nick Erwood summed up the match, in a post match interview, as Gators overpowered the Lincoln Bulls 87 – 55. Gators stormed to an early 25 – 12 first quarter lead and never relinquished it with four players hitting double figures – Jordan Duggan (16), Kaye McKee (15), Chris Duthie (14) and Michael Barnes (13). Lincoln’s Pat Fraser provided some resistance with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds), with help from Erwood (15 points, 7 rebounds) and big man Vinny George (10 points).

Varsity v Royals (101 – 45)

Varsity ran away with an easy victory against an undermanned Royals squad, 101 – 45. Unfortunately for Royals, a severe head clash between star swingman Simon Hodgson and Varsity’s Daniel Mulder in the second quarter left Hodgson requiring six stitches and subsequently did not return to the game. Both players should hopefully pass CBA’s stringent concussion test and play in the next round, fortunate that there are no CBA games schooled over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Varsity’s Ollie Crawford killed it down low, amassing 39 points as Royals had no answer for his athletic post game and shooter Jordyn Kauta (12) and forward Finbar Argus (12) piled on more points. For Royals, four players fouled out leaving only 3 players on the court in the final three minutes. Nathan Hight hit a few jumpers on his way to 13 points.

Checkers v North Canterbury (67 – 56)

The defending champions, Checkers pulled away in the last quarter as they fought off a strong challenge from North Canterbury, for a 67 – 56 win. It was neck and neck the whole game with the scores locked at 29-29 at the half time break, and NC hanging on to a 1-point lead heading into the final period. Consistent swingman Scott Edwards worked hard for NC for his 18 points, shooter Liam Connelly hit three treys on his way to 15 points and Angus Forbes added another 14. The Checkers’ twins Isaac and Tyson Silberry slashed their way for 18 and 10 points respectively, while combo guard Jacob Naylor helped out with 12 points.

Scorers were:

Atami 69 (Alex Dobbs 18, Cam Chalmers 18, Bryn McLennan 13) Pioneer 44 (EJ Hamilton 12, Tyler Hunt 10), Gators 87 (Jordan Duggan 16, Kaye McKee 15, Chris Duthie 14, Michael 13) Lincoln University 55 (Nick Erwood 15, 7R, Pat Fraser 13, 10R, Vince George 11), University 101 (Ollie Crawford 39, Finbar Argus 12, Jordyn Kauta 12) Royals 45 (Nathan Hight 13, Simon Hodgson 10), Checkers 67 (Isaac Silberry 18, Jacob Naylor 12, Tyson Silberry 10) North Canterbury 56 (Scott Edwards 18, Liam Connelly 15, Angus Forbes 14). Bye: Wolverines. Points table after six rounds with games played in parenthisis: Gators 12 (6), Wolverines 10 (5), Atami 10 (6), Checkers 9 (6), Lincoln Uni 8 (5) University 7 (5).

Men’s Under 20

Wolverines and Middleton Grange maintained their unbeaten record after five rounds while CH CH Boys High, Cashmere, Burnside and North Canterbury cemented their third placing (4 wins 1 loss) with comfortable wins. Lincoln High, Rangiora and St Bedes College are three teams vying for a top eight finishing spot at the end of the round robin one point behind.

Burnside HS re-groups to defeat Gators 94-45

The defending champion Burnside High bounced back after last week’s heavy humiliating loss to Middleton Grange Gators with a solid win over the Gators club side 94 to 45.

Oliver Fairbrother used his height to control the boards, slotting nine of his 19 points as Burnside took control, running the ball at speed to open up a 34-6 first-quarter lead. Burnside kept up the pressure outscoring Gatorts 30-11 in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 64-17 at the break through the increased efforts of Shou Nisbett and Jahnim Campbell.

As Burnside utilized its bench more often in the second spell Gators made some penetrating baskets through the efforts of Ben Kroening and Oliver Carran, especially in the final quarter.

Middleton Grange Gators thumps Rangiora High 88-51

Middleton’s school team had this game pretty much won in the first quarter when it stunned Rangiora High with its aggressive defence and never really allowed Rangiora to recover. Middleton just had a superior all round shooting game led by Zach Lilburne with 18, Ashleigh Adamson slotting14, Ihaka Pink controlling play and scoring 13 and promising teenage Regan Burnett with 13. Riley Block led the Rangiora response with a hard-earned 19 points with difficulty penetrating the tight Gators defence while Barclay Miller was the only other Rangiora player to reach double figures.

North Canterbury edges Lincoln High School 91-84

North Canterbury leapt to a 14 point lead in the first quarter, ahead 27-13 but failed to keep their foot on the Lincoln throats. At one stage Lincoln held a one-point lead but as North Canterbury put the starting five back on, managed to hold Lincoln at bay. By half-time Lincoln had closed to trail 44-47 with North Canterbury extending the lead to 70-66 by the third break.

Initially North Canterbury held James Cawthorn at bay but he became a factor in the game later as he ran up 33 points with deceptive ease. He had strong support from Stuart Erskine with 16.

Lawson Morris-Whyte played very well for North Canterbury to lead all scorers with 41 points including three dunks (he had 7 last week) but Jordan De Winter (11) and Liam Connelly (20) also kept the score ticking over. All in all a very exciting game.

Wolverines overwhelms a gritty Papanui 105-55

Polished team work from Wolverines saw it race away to a handy 29-14 lead by quarter-time through the efforts of Aaron Gunstone, Hayden Murphy and Jacob Fairhall while Taylor Britt set the moves and out-skipped the Wolverines defence to slot his 25 points for Papanui. Carl Isitt and Jayden Britt also contributed well for Papanui.

After leading 51-24 Wolverines kept up the pressure through the efforts of Chris Johnston.

Cashmere 92 Aranui Academy 43

Cashmere kept in touch of the leaders with a comfortable win over a re-building Aranuii Academy, winning 92-43 after leading the first half 51-17. Joemer Altabano impressed with his 20 point effort for cashmere, George Love again dominated the boards with his height while Jakob Strong-Van Gestel had to work much harder for his 10 points.

Floyd McNabb (15) and Ricky McDonald where the best from Aranui.

Boys High 72 Christ’s College 34

Scott Ralston set Boys High away with two early baskets and, just before the first break he sunk a three-pointer and another basket to see Boys High go ahead 20-11. Nathan Campbell kept up the pressure as Boys High pulled further ahead in the second to take a commanding 40-15 lead but relaxed the pressure as it ran its bench in the second half. For Christ’s College danger man Louis Mann was contained to just nine points.

St Bedes 80 Pioneer 51

A scoring burst by Cole Wilson gave St Bedes College a strong foundation on which to build a winning effort. By the end of the first break St Bedes where ahead 18-7 and stretched that to 38-18 by half-time with efforts from Connor McCrossin and Benjamin Hood. Lauchie Weston put in a consistant effort to raise 14 points for St Bedes while Jeremy Jackson replied with 12 difficult points for Pioneer.

St Andrews 69 Shirley Spartens 38

Shirley Boys High did well to contain the St Andrews challenge holding them back to a 12-17 scoreline by quarter-time  with some confident moves, but St Andrews, aided by the return from injury of the tall Nick Symon (16) and livewire playmaker Zak De Roo (15) St Andrews carried the game to Shirley which crumbled under pressure. St Andrews advanced the lead to 35-17 by half-time with Jayden Chan stepping up to fill the gaps and keeping the pressure on.

Turnovers were costly for Shirley while its Captain, Reece Bonner accumulated a hard-earned 12 points.

Scorers were:

Burnside HS 94 (Shou Nisbett 20, Oliver Fairbrother 19, Jahnim Campbell 14) Gators 45 (Ben Kroening 12, Oliver Carran 10), Middleton Grange Gators 88 (Zach Lilburne 18, Ashleigh Adamson 14, Ihaka Pink 13, Regan Burnett 13,  George Klomp 10) Rangiora HS 51 (Riley Block 19, Barclay Miller 11), St Andrews Coll 69 (Nick Symon 16, Zac De Roo 15, Jayden Chan 12) Shirley Spartens 38 (Reece Bonner 12 ), Cashmere HS 92 (Joemar Altabano 20, George Love 12, Jakob Strong-Van Gestel 10) Aranui Academy 43 (Floyd McNabb 15, Ricky McDonald 11), Wolverines 105 (Hayden Murphy 22, Aaron Gunstone 22, Chris Johnston 19, Jacob Fairhall 17) Papanui HS 55 (Taylor Britt 25), St Bedes Coll 80 (Cole Wilson 23, Lauchie Weston 14, Connor McCrossin 12) Pioneer Pacers 51 (Jeremy Jackson 12), North Canterbury 91 (Lawson Morris-Whyte 41, Liam Connelly 20, Jordan De Winter 11) Lincoln HS 84 (James Cawthorn 33, Stu Erskine 16, Joel Eslava 12) Christchurch Boys HS 72 (Scott Ralston 18, Nathan Campbell 14) Christ’s College34 (Louis Mann 9).

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
