Men’s Premier Hoben Trophy

 

The defending Hoben Trophy winner, Atami is the only unbeaten team in the Men’s Premier club basketball competition after three rounds with a comfortable 83-61 win over a lack-lustre Gators in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

The defending championship winner Checkers relaxed the pressure on new-comer Lincoln University before winning 84-74 while Wolverines had another top class encounter but was forced to defend very strongly in the final quarter as Canterbury University re-gathered its momentum, Wolverines escaping to a 73-66 victory.

This leaves Checkers and Gators each with two wins and a loss apiece in the search for the two teams to join Atami that will possibly contest the Alan Hoben trophy final.

 

Atami defeats out of sorts Gators 83-61

The ageing Atami team opened its encounter against the youthful Gators, racing to a 23-14 first-quarter lead through the sharp-shooting prowess of Rusty Thompson who splashed three triple pointers in succession. After Thompson was shut down Atami feed the eager hands of Scott Howell who got inside a slack gators defence to slot three easy baskets. Gators inspirational player Chris Duthie was well contained by the Atami defence, restricted to 11 points as was the sharp shooting Jordan Duggan. Several Gators players were struggling to maintain the pace of the game after its Under 23 team thumped Checkers 99-57 earlier in the morning. Kaye McKee continued his efforts for Gators with 14 hard-earned points while a former Canterbury Ram Matt Stevenson was well contained.

Former Ram Paul McFarlin set up many of the Atami moves with Ritchie Howell responding with 16 points while Thompson added another three-pointer to bring his tally to 21. By half-time Atami had stretched its lead to 51-28 while the second spell was much more evenly matched.

 

Connell leads Checkers to beat Lincoln University 84-74

Nat Connell, who has played NBL for several teams, showed his class, piling on a creditable 47 points for Checkers but worked just as hard on defence with 13 rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Checkers raced to a 33-13 lead against a subdued Lincoln University and stretched the lead to 52-25 just before the half-time break. Bede Masters stepped up for Checkers adding 12 rebounds to his hard-earned 11 points while Pip Johnston ran hard for little reward.

Nick Erwood drove the students fight-back in the second half with an outstanding 23 points coupled with 10 rebounds and eight steals adding to his U23 efforts while the sharp-shooting James Cawthorn also plundered 22 points as Checkers relaxed the pressure. Lincoln grabbed 25 points off turn-overs to Checkers 21 and got another 13 second chance efforts.

 

Wolverines escapes University clutches winning tough battle 73-66

University started strongly through the efforts of Willem Tolhoek and Sam Crozier, leading 21-16 by the first quarter break while Lionel Hopgood and Dean Le Warne got inside the students defences to lead the Wolverines reply. University pulled to a 35-23 lead (12 points), the games widest margin before Wolverines slowly assurted stronger pressure on the students through the efforts of Hitesh Pratap and Andrew Kellaway but still trailed 36-38 by half-time. University dropped their guard in the third-quarter with Mike Kinley splashing several three point bombs in amazing 22 points while grabbing six rebounds. Wolverines outpointed University 25-15 in the third-quarter to lead 61-53. Tight defence from both sides kept the scoring low in the final quarter with Wolverines maintaining a narrow advantage from the free throw line and riding out a strong threat, led from University by livewire Marty Davison (18 points and seven rebounds) and Brent Fisher, 14 points and 19 rebounds.

Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy

 

University and Halswell appear heading for a first round robin Patron’s trophy play-off with both teams remaining unbeaten after three rounds. University took a long time to get on top off an improved Pioneer before pulling clear to win 62-49. Minties proved too strong for Gators easing the pressure in the final quarter to win 98-55 while Halswell was well challenged by Lincoln University pulling away in the final quarter to win 58-43.  Former Wildcat Anna Williams engineered a strong second-quarter effort as Halswell got the edge over Lincoln University, leading 29-16. Bridgette Lawn and Mid Cantabrian Hannah Turton helped Lincoln come back in the third quarter while continued pressure from the lively Jesse Baker saw Halswell pull clear in the last quarter, extending it to 56-36, a 20 point lead before winning by 15. Tash Van Vuuren ground out a hard-earned 13 points for Halswell playing beside her mum Marinda.

 

University 62 Pioneer 49

A former Tallfern and former University captain Stacey Hickford (12) boosted the strength of Pioneer and with strong support from the speedy Connie Dick gave the leading Canterbury University side a strong run in the first half, leading the first quarter 16-15 but trailing 26-28 by half-time.

Jamie Campbell from sunny Nelson led the student’s recovery with 16 points while Canterbury teenage representatives Laken Wairau (10) and Maja Burry (11) supported strongly. Wildcat Pip Connell mustered the students’ defences as University pulled clear in the second spell.

 

Halswell 58 Lincoln University 43

Former Wildcat Anna Williams engineered a strong second-quarter effort as Halswell got the edge over Lincoln University, leading 29-16. Bridgette Lawn and Mid Cantabrian Hannah Turton helped Lincoln come back in the third quarter while continued pressure from the lively Jesse Baker saw Halswell pull clear in the last quarter, extending it to 56-36, a 20 point lead before winning by 15. Tash Van Vuuren ground out a hard-earned 13 points for Halswell playing beside her mum Marinda.

 

Minties thumps Gators 98-55

Minties moved quickly into top gear with Gemma Hazeldene, a former North Canterbury player riding the boards for another handy 35 points with support from Hayley Gray and raced to a 25-13 first-quarter lead and quickly extended it to 51-19 by half time. Rachel Harrison, made her presence felt for Gators trying to slow the Minties onslaught while Marnie Block and Kimberley Heron began to find the net to give some respectability to Gators score.

Libby Bensley quickly outpaced her marker to record 14 points for Minties with Sara Phillips and Sia Ah Tong also finding range.

 

The game was a North Canterbury reunion with Kaiapoi’s Gemma Hazeldene leading the charge for Minties. Other former North Canterbury players in the Minties lineup saw promising efforts from Hayley Gray (10), Sara Phillips (11), Sally-Anne Tull and Karla Martin while Gina Trounson (nee Cameron) was the Minties coach. In the opposing Gators team Marnie Block (12) and Kimberley Heron (21) helped keep the score respectable.

Men’s Division One

 

University 75 Atami 55

The Tim Richardson-engineered UC Men's Division One side shook off a slow start with some hard-nosed, lock-down defence to reel off a second half surge over Atami, 75-55. The game was evenly poised through the first half, but four consecutive three-pointers to Chris Grant (19 points) and Joe Hammond saw the side open up a 15-point lead at three quarter time, and cause Atami to rethink its decision to come out in a zone defence to start the second half. UC rookie Jamie Tomars cut hard for his 10 point haul, including one drive through four defenders for the 'and one' finish. Atami was unlucky with their shooting, as the usually reliable Jeremy Phillips not able to find the mark.

 

University U23 102 Pioneer Yellow MD1 35

The UC U23 side had a comprehensive win in a make-up match against MD1 Pioneer Yellow, 102-35. Centre Ollie Crawford had his first in-game dunk in his second season with the club and led the way with 40 points. All players featured in the scoring column, finding holes against the inexperienced Pioneer defence.

 

Wolverines last quarter burst beats Gators 88-54

The Wolverines Div one boys struggled to get going for three- quarters of the match as they went into the last quarter only up 59 - 51 against a determined Gators side. Some stern words from coach Vicky Hudson to lift the intensity on defence was answered as they outscored the Gators 29 - 3 in the last quarter to win 88-54. Jamie Graham scorched the Gators defence from outside the arc scoring 7 x 3pters to finish with 27pts. Stu Brooker (16pts) and Nick Purcell (15pts) hammered them inside as Earl Rickard (12pts) and Paul Havill (12pts) penetrated the open gaps. With many of the team members playing with injuries, having next week off has come at a great time.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

 

 

Lincoln University 69 Atami 57

Lincoln University improved its record to an unblemished 2-0, after dispatching an under-manned, but valiant, Atami team. Atami was without the services of Lucas Hill, leaving them with only seven healthy players for the game. In contrast Lincoln University had its full complement of players available, and used this depth to withstand some early foul trouble, while playing tough defence. Despite this, Alex Dobbs was able to finish with 27 points, and Cam Chalmers contributed a double-double of 13 and 10 boards for Atami. Nick Erwood displayed some hot shooting for LU, to finish with 22 points (10/17 FG). Nick was supported across the board by his team mates in the scoring column, with Vincent George and Joseph King both scoring nine points apiece. Atami had a 20-16 lead after the first quarter, but LU was able to gain a six point lead by the half, a lead they would never relinquish.

 

North Canterbury 85 Royals 35

Daine Parata found more freedom on the likely cellar-dwellars Royals in the Men’s Under 23 club basketball competition splashing in a handy six triple--pointers as he recorded 23 points to help North Canterbury set up a strong 85-35 win over Royals in Cowles stadium on Saturday. Scott Edwards did the hard yards, driving the lanes to also notch 23 points with a useful 11 points recorded by Ryan Handley.

North Canterbury raced to a 26-8 first quarter lead, extending it to 58-25 by half-time but relaxed some of its defence. The pace of the game slowed noticeably in the second half.

Hugh Munro stood out for Royals with a bold 12 points.

 

Wolverines 87 Pioneer 57

The Wolverines U23's got off to another slow start giving Pioneer a glimpse of hope as the scores where tied 30 - 30 at half time. The boys lifted their defensive intensity in the 3rd quarter and Taylor Britt scored 9 of his 12pts to begin the 3rd. The boys dominated the quarter outscoring Pioneer 29 - 8 and put an end to any idea of an upset. Captain Oli Davies found himself in early foul trouble but still finished the game with 22pts. Andrew Kellaway had a double double scoring 14pts, 10reb, Kieran Ball added 14pts, 7reb and Hitesh Pratap finished with 12pts.

Gators 99 Checkers 57

Apart from a turnover riddled first few minutes, the Gators were able to control the tempo of the game as well as the scoreboard from start to finish.

While Checkers were unable to take advantage of their open perimeter looks Gators sharpshooters Michael Barnes and Zach Lilburne seemingly could not miss, hitting four  three’s each, making it tough for Checkers to stay in their preferred zone.

The Gators eventually running away with this one 99-57.

Women’ Women’s Division One/Under20

The UC Women's U20 team stamped their authority on the U20 grade with their third win of the season today against Halswell, 111-16. Coach Sussan Graham had her young (most are 13-15 year olds) troops drilled well and their uncompromising full court match-up defence caused migraines, as they established a 39-0 lead through well-executed transition play before a banked free-throw opened up Halswell's scoring account. UC held a cricket score-like 59-3 lead at the half and cracked the century mark with three minutes to play. Great court vision, unselfish play and superb on-ball pressure were features of the victory.

Mid-week Men

 

Great to see another Deaf group back (Goaulds) in action after a long break and welcome to new entrant Sphinx and a welcome return to Burnham. Nigel Buchanan just can’t slow down for Checkers White and Paul Isitt is getting taller and harder to get around. Watch out for Terry’s lethal outside shot, he missed a few last week but will be back on target pretty soon. Royals is another new group to be welcomed to the grade.

Mid-week players were delighted to be back in Cowles stadium and competition just as keen this season as any others. There is an 8^th team ready at last to join the competition shortly. Welcome to all new players in the grade and enjoy the season. Watch out for Halswell Red as the defending champion takes the court this Wednesday.
