Wildcats Rally Falls Short Against Rotorua

6 April 2013, Rotorua Energy Events Centre

The Rotorua Lady Vols saw an opportunity to put pressure on the Wildcats, with Point Guard Shea Crotty out nursing her injured ankle. The move paid dividend for Rotorua, to the tune of 20 turnovers committed by Canterbury in the first half. Despite the one-sided stat, the Wildcats headed into half time clinging to a 24-23 lead, on the back of their trademark defence once again.

This didn’t last though, as Rotorua was able to improve its shooting from 29% in the first half (9/31) to 52% in the second (15/29), using a 10-1 run to start off the third quarter to build a lead they would never relinquish. The Wildcats did show some mettle, albeit it a little too late, as they were able to cut the Lady Volunteers’ lead from 14 with two minutes remaining, down to 6 with over half a minute remaining. This was as close as they got though, as Aroha Haumaha was able to hit her Free Throws, and Gabriella Adams followed this up by blocking Charissa Theyers’ 3 point attempt which would have cut the lead to five had she made it.

Tessa Boagni continued her strong showing, with her second straight Double-Double to the tune of 17 Points and 10 Rebounds, as well as registering two blocked shots. Pip Connell made life tough for the home team, hitting on two three point attempts to finish with 11 points.

The story for Rotorua was Captain Aroha Haumaha, who finished with 29 points on 12/17 shooting, 7 Rebounds, and 5 Assists. Final score of the game was a 61-53 win for Rotorua.
