Erin Rooney Named First Team Atlantic 10

Stuff.co.nz reports on Erin's most recent accomplishment, as well as her team's  success this season:

Canterbury basketballer Erin Rooney has played a significant role in her American college team, Fordham University, reaching this weekend's Atlantic 10 conference final.

The Tall Fern shooting guard scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and had six assists in her team's 66-55 semifinal victory against Temple University.

Rooney had a scoring surge of 13 points in eight minutes which helped Fordham draw clear of Temple in the second spell. The final will be played on Monday.

The previous day Fordham had accounted for St Louis 65-48 in a quarterfinal and Rooney was solid with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.

Rooney's team has had its best year in three decades, finishing its regular season 22-7 and the Atlantic conference 12-2. In her final regular season game she scored her 1000th point for the school.

She also achieved first team honours in the Atlantic 10 conference after the stellar regular season.

Rooney netted 14.4 points per game and ranked first on the team in assists (3.7 per game), third in rebounding (5.1 per game), second in steals (1.7 per game), second in free throw percentage (83.2 per cent) and first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2).

At regular season's end, Rooney was tied for sixth in the league in scoring, ranked ninth in assists, second in free throw percentage, 13th in steals, tenth in assist-to-turnover ratio and fourth in minutes played.

First team selection marks the only time since Fordham joined the conference nearly two decades ago that a Ram has received the honour from the Atlantic 10.

Rooney started all 29 games for the Rams, scoring in double figures 25 times and scoring at least 15 points on 16 occasions.
