BBNZ Secondary School Nationals - Day Five and Burnside Boxscore

National AA Secondary Schools Basketball Championships – Nelson Day five Semi’s

By Bruce Martin

Burnside High school boys bounced back from Thursday’s disappointing  three-point loss (70-67) at the hands off Nayland College in quarter-final play to beat Auckland Grammar school 72-63 in the 5-8 semi’s and will now play off today for a creditable fifth placing against Tauranga Boys College at 2.15pm today.

Proud mum Sharon E sends her report:

Great game this morning, got off to a good start with Nick scoring the first 9 points, including a triple and still their guys hung off him!  Cashmere led 27-19 at quarter break and 48-32 by half-time.

Mark Kelly is a class player and we struggled to stop him inside. Unlike the other teams we played against, Auckland Grammar didn’t have a BIG big. Whilst taller than our players Kelly was more wirey than HUGE and almost unstoppable in close. Also hit a couple of outside shots showing he is the whole package. Aik Ho rotated his players often to try and keep them fresh. Our lead at half time (16) should have seen us win comfortably but they hit a few shots then Oli fouled out with about 5mins to go and they started to press. Forced a few turnovers and all of a sudden it was a 7 point game. Joe called a time out, we inbounded from the baseline, big pass up court (one way of breaking a press!) and Nick scored under the basket. Then a fast break lay up Shou (Nisbet) and the lead was back up to 11 with a minute or so to go, we then traded baskets and took the win!

While Jahnim’s (Campbell) shooting wasn’t the best today, he came off battered and bruised and was huge in the first quarter for us. Shou became that vital third scorer we lacked last night.

The third quarter was squared 14 points apiece with Burnsides biggest lead 62-42 (20 pts) just before the third-quarter break. Auckland outscored Burnside in the final quarter 17-10. Burnside’s shooting improved to 29/71 (41%).

Go Burnside, finish with another win! Best of luck from all the CBA family.

Both Aranui High and Cashmere High teams avoided the wooden spoon with Aranui pulling away from Lynfield College to win 87-69 while Cashmere edged out Otumoetai College 69-66 and now will meet each other to fight out 21st placing.

In the Grand Final of the Premierships in Dunedin last month Otago Boys High beat Nayland College 55-41 and while Nayland reached the main semi’s by ousting Burnside, Otago Boys slipped down the championships ladder and will play Massey College in the 17th place play-off.

In the Main semi’s last night Westlake toppled Hutt Valey 91-73 while the defending champion Rosmini put out Nayalnd College. Rosmini will meet Westlake Boys High in the Grand Final.

Arch-rivals Rangiora High and Christchurch Girls High will clash in the ninth place play-off after both sides recorded strong wins in the 9-12 Quarter-finals yesterday. Rangiora over-powered Buller in style, winning 64-36 while Girls High polished off Hawera High school 71-60 with a strong game.

The Cashmere High girls got back the winning feeling with a solid 72-49 win over Marlborough Girls College 72-49 and faces Tauranga Girls College to battle out 13th placing. The Cashmere High Girls can arrive home with heads held high as they almost upset the championships in Pool play ending in a triple tie in pool play on four wins and one loss but was unlucky to be relegated to the Middle quarters on countback and was pipped by two points in the quarters by Hawera High school.

Rangiora High has a score to settle with Girls High after it was beaten 58-52 in the Premierships Final while Rangiora had been victors twice in the schools competition during the season.

Rangiora is attending a record seventh Nationals under coach Clinton Olson.

In the main semi’s Mt albert Grammar beat arch-rivals Auckland Girls Grammar 52-43 while Hamilton Girls High pipped Rangitoto College 73-71. Mt albert and Hamilton Girls meet in the Grand Final.
