The second Asia Pacific Team Camp, presented by NIKE and the NBA.

Ten Basketball New Zealand athletes have received the chance of a lifetime to learn the game from NBA coaches and players.

Congratulations to Burnside High’s Shou Nisbet and former St Andrew’s College pupil Jackson Stent, who have been selected in the 10 man squad to attend the second Asia Pacific Team Camp and help the National U17 squad prepare for their FIBA Oceania Championship series against Australia in September.

Scheduled for June 13-16 at Nanjing, China, the camp will assemble some of the best junior talent from NZ, Australia, China and Korea, with a focus on both skill and fundamentals, but also team concepts and competitions.

Men’s Premier Hoben Trophy

The defending champion Atami will meet Gators in the Hoben trophy final this Saturday at 4.00pm after the last round robin matches concluded on Saturday in Cowles stadium but Atami’s opposition hung in the balance for the entire final game of the day when the defending Championship winner Checkers held off a determined last-quarter challenge from Wolverines to win 67-60, allowing Gators to claim second place after all three teams were tied on eight points and Gators having a slightly superior Goal Average.

On Friday, Checkers decided to allow Atami to take the two points from the previous week’s game after a double lower leg break to Bede Marsters stopped the game just after half-time with Atami ahead 45-29.  Checkers had decided not to continue the game where it was stopped.

Checkers pips Wolverines 67-60 but it was not enough.

Wolverines Master coach Jamie Graham new exactly what was needed, a win over Checkers would have put his team through or could afford a four point loss whilst Checkers would need an 11 point win to stop Gators from claiming the second placing.

Checkers with the more disciplined team work took an early 22-11 lead by quarter time while Wolverines matched their efforts in the next two quarters. Wolverines trailed 44-55 at three-quarter time, closed the gap to within four points in the hectic closing moments of the last quarter but tight Checkers defence and poorly taken shots by Wolverines saw Checkers take the game, stopping Wolverines’ bid to keep the margin to four points.

Former NBL player Nat Connell ducked and dived through tight Wolverines defences to notch 28 points for Checkers with support from his former Royals team-mates Pip Johnston and Ben Van Oosten. Former Ram and Cougar Lionel Hopgood rebounded the boards strongly for Wolvwerines but had to work very hard to earn his 14 points.

Atami crushed University 88-63

Earlier, Atami secured top placing but needed a strong third-quarter burst to break clear of University before winning 88-63. Sam Dobbs set the pace early, laying in several baskets and sinking a three-pointer with Rusty Thompson mopping up the loose ball and gliding to the basket to give Atami the edge. Willy McVitty replied with some penetrating runs while the speedy Marty Davison dribbled added to Universities play, setting the moves while sinking a basket from behind the arc. Harley Campbell and Sam crozier helped keep the students in the game as University reduced the margin to just five points – trailing 37-42 by half-time.

Atami’s coach Ash Rees wanted to stretch his legs and opened the second spell with a three with Thompson again driving hard for valuable baskets. The flood gates started to open in the third-quarter with Captain Ritchie Howell rebounding strongly and putting back shots a little more easily to accumulate 22 points. Atami maintained a tight defence but lanky teenager Nathan Campbell penetrated to keep the students in the hunt but Atami held them at bay in an evenly matched final quarter.

Gators thumps Lincoln University 92-56

Gators showed that they will be in contention for honours this season with a solid 92-56 win over Lincoln University with seven players hitting double-figure returns.

Gators coach Dave Harrison had his charges peaking at the right time.

Lincoln was stretched to contain Gators as all Gators starters fired up early, racing to a 20-11 lead and 47-23 by the half-time break. The veteran Blase Dowall led Gators by example while his much younger charges found the hoop with relative ease. Matt Stevenson chimed in several handy baskets while Chris Duthie and Alex Jellie readily turned pressure into points.

Jozeph Knottenbelt showed some handy skills as he slotted several good baskets to open the fourth-quarter for Gators and Kaye McKee and Jamin Thomas added more baskets from the bench.

Lincoln’s whiz kid Nick Erwood was tightly contained, given little room to move while Pat Fraser and Joseph King were just as tightly marked by the roving Gators defence.

Scorers were:

Atami 88 (Rusty Thomson 24, Ritchie Howell 22, Sam Dobbs 13) University 63 (Sam Crozier 17, Marty Davison 14, Nathan Campbell 11). HT: 42-37. Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy

Halswell wrapped up top placing in the Patron’s trophy women’s Premier competition with a comfortable 89-36 win over Gators while the defending champion University got back on target, edging out a lack-lustre Minties 54-41. Lincoln University had a tight battle before defeating Pioneer 52-43 leaving Halswell and University to fight out the Patron’s trophy final this Saturday at 2.30pm.

Minties, containing many North Canterbury based players, failed to shine and was beaten by a rejuvenated University 54-41. Minties were badly missing the services of the Kaiapoi based livewire Gemma Hazeldene and outside shooter Sarah Phillips. A win would have seen Minties challenge for the Patron’s trophy but Minties will now play-off for third against Lincoln University.

University was still missing its inspirational leader, Pip Connell, a Wildcats injured player and without her controlling expertise was slow to start but Jamie Campbell stepped up in the second spell and with support from teenage representative Laken Wairau opened up a 21-17 first half lead. Honours were evenly matched in the third quarter but the students drew away in the final period with Campbell winning the battle of the boards, slotting 17 points.

Halswell had six players hit double-figure returns, led by some strong inside play from Rebecca Falloon while Marinda Van Vuuren returned from a spell with 15 points and supported strongly by daughter Natasha with 12. Jess Baker distributed the ball well for Halswell while accumulating 15 points to the cause. Kimberley Heron, another North Canterbury player, contributed 11 for Gators.

Bailey McDougal land Wildcat Captain Shea Crotty slotted 12 points each as Lincoln got the edge over Pioneer while Connie Dick replied with a hard-earned 12 points for Pioneer.

Scorers were:

University 54 (Jamie Campbell 17, Laken Wairau 14) Minties 41(Hayley Gray 10, Lauren Mangan 10). HT: 21-17. Lincoln University 52 (Bayley McDougal 12, Shea Crotty 12) Pioneer 43 (Connie Dick 12). HT: 21-20. Halswell 89 (Rebecca Falloon 18, Jess Baker 15, Marinda Van Vuuren 15, Natasha Van Vuuren 12) Gators 36 (Kimberley Heron 11). HT: 43-19. Final points table: Halswell 10, University 9, Lincoln Uni 8, Minties 7, Pioneer 6, Gators 5.

Men’s Division One

The Ashburton Gannets has been forced to withdraw from the Men’s Division competition after a number of seasons trooping to Christchurch from Ashburton.

The two Canterbury U19 rep teams will fill in the games until the end of the first round robin on July 14th and after a two week break the grade will continue with a Top six and bottom four from August 4th.

The defending champion Placemakers Wolves showed it was on track with a 108-50 demolition of new entrant Pioneer. Led by the ever-green Fraser Costley who slotted 29 and was backed up by his brothers Gareth with 18 and Cameron on 12 while Joshua Manning and Penani Alesana also stood out. Ollie Dawe toiled hard for Pioneer.

Atami got the edge on rival High School Old Boys winning 70-61 with Andy Baird and Paul Cameron having strong games for Atami. Jamie Day and John O’Leary kept the experienced Old Boys attack in touch but Atami pulled clear.

Wolverines showed that they will be in contention for honours this season with a hard-earned 67-55 victory over North Canterbury through the efforts of Nick Purcell and Paul Havill while key player Jamie Graham could only watch injured from the bench.

Scorers were:

Wolverines 67 (Nick Purcell 15, Paul Havill 15) North Canterbury55 (Angus Gourlay 14, Troy Halliday 11), Pioneer Yellow 53 (Micky 13, Benny Magon  19) Gators 52 (Bradley Young 12), University 20 Ashburton Gannets  0 by notified default), Atami 70 (Andy Baird 17, Paul Cameron 14, Ivan Hill 13) HSOB 61 (Jamie Day 15, John O’Leary 15, Craig Wilson 10)Placemakers 108 (Fraser Costley 29, Gareth Costley 18, Joshua Manning 28, Cameron Costley 12, Penani Alesana 12) Pioneer Blue 50 (Ollie Dawe 19).

Men’s Under 23 Championship

Gators and Wolverines both have five from five and have established a gap on the next three teams, Checkers, Atami and Lincoln University. Atami’s (3-2) win over the steadily improving Royals coupled with Wolverines thumping Checkers sees Atami slip into third place alone while Checkers (2-3) and Lincoln (3-1) share seven points but Lincoln has a game in hand in the race to find the ‘Top four’ for round two.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday’s action in Cowles stadium. You could hear the buzz all over Christchurch

CBA U23 Round 5

Atami v Royals (65 – 55)

In what was a surprisingly tight affair, Atami ran out victors against the cellar dwelling Royals team, 65-55. It was a balanced effort for Atami which got the job done with four players reaching double figures – Cam Chalmers (25), Callan Tucker (14), Lucas Hill (11) and Bryn McLennan (10). Atami assistant coach, Rusty Thomson, provided “no comment” after the game, but said that Royals swingman Simon Hodgson (26), “played well”. Royals guard Hugh Munro added another 13.

Lincoln University (85) v Pioneer (30)

It was all one-way traffic as Lincoln University thumped Pioneer by 55 points. The Pioneer boys had a hard time putting the ball in the hoop, emphasized by only scoring 2 points in the third quarter. On the other hand, the Lincoln boys ran well in transition with Pat Fraser (19), Nick Erwood (13) and Joe King (12) all notching up a few buckets. For Pioneer, only Tyla Harrison-Hunt (10) managed to score double digits. Lincoln University Coach James Lissaman was very happy with the progress his team had made since the start of the season, and lamented the fact that his team didn’t come ready to play the previous week.

Wolverines v Checkers (84 – 56)

Captain Oli Davies led his Wolverines squad with 25 points to a solid W against defending champs Checkers. It was a relatively close game until the final quarter, when the Wolfpack decided to showcase their run and gun game with point guard Taylor Britt knocking down a couple of treys on his way to 18 points, and combo guard James Levings adding another 15. For Checkers, Jacob Naylor (13) and Tyson Silberry (12) helped keep the game competitive.

Gators v Varsity (67 – 54 OT)

The Varsity boys nearly caused a major upset as they pushed the undefeated Gators team to the limits, only to fall in overtime 67 – 54. In, perhaps, an analogous situation to the playoff series between the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs, the young and energetic Varsity squad hustled their way to a slight lead; Ollie Crawford leading Varsity scorers with 13. However, this didn’t deter the old and experienced heads of the Gators squad, as they executed their offense well, often finding big swingman Kaye McKee (18) cutting down the lane and Jozef Knottenbelt (14) open on the perimeter. The game eventually came down to the final possession with Gators up by 3. After a lengthy review of the previous play by officials, it was deemed Varsity ball with 7 seconds remaining. Shooter Jordyn Kauta found himself open on a corner 3 and the game was sent to OT (video of the shot can be found on the CBA facebook page here). In the extra period, it was a blowout of sorts, as the Varsity squad made too many errors and Gators capitalising with transition buckets.

Scorers were:

Atami 65 (Cam Chalmers 25, Callan Tucker 14, Lucas Hill 11, Bryn McLennan 10) Royals 55 (Simon Hodgson 26, Hugh Munro 13), Lincoln University 85 (Pat Fraser 19, Nick Erwood 13, Joseph King 12) Pioneer 30 (Tyler Hunt 10), Wolverines 84 (Oli Davies 25, Taylor Britt 18, James Levings 15)  Checkers 56 (Jacob Naylor 13, Tyson Silberry 12), Gators 67 (Kaye McKee 18, Jozef Knottenbelt 14 ) University 54 (Ollie Crawford 13).

Men’s Under 20

Competition remains very tight in the greatest secondary school competition in the country with all sixteen teams going tooth and nail each Saturday. Two teams, Wolverines and Middleton Grange Gators are unbeaten after four rounds while increditably six teams (Rangiora, Burnside, Cashmere, Lincoln HS, North Canterbury and Boys High) are lined up with just the one loss.

Middleton Grange Gators ‘upsets’ Burnside 68-56

Middleton Grange Gators coach Tim Bennetts stifled the suggestion that his team “upset”

the defending champion Burnside High on Saturday with a well-executed victory over Burnside 68-56. It was back to the drawing board for a disappointed Joe Hammond who had his young charges showing strong form despite the loss of several key players and the inclusion of some of the winning U17 team members.

Canterbury representative Zach Lilburne (17) hit the court running for Gators but was quickly fouled. George Klomp opened up the Burnside defence with a triple pointer while Ash Adamson and Peter McLean added to the tempo. Burnside’s early efforts were led by Jahnim Campbell with support from Shou Nisbett (13) but was soon stifled by the Gators defence.

Gators snuck ahead 16-13 at quarter-time but asserted much pressure on the unsuspecting Burnside as different Gators’ players notched telling basket after basket to take the period 23-10 and extend the lead to 39-23. Burnside’s vice-captain Regan Burnett (18) stepped up in the second-half to see Burnside make some inroads into the Gators lead but still trailed 37-48 at the next break. Oliver Fairbrother (14) made strong efforts for Burnside in the final quarter but Gators remained with a tight defence and honours were shared in the period 19-19.

Lincoln High 53 Gators 50

Stu Erskine stepped up his presence with a well-executed 25 points to lead Lincoln High to a narrow 53-50 win over the Gators club side. After some scoring difficulties were sorted out the teams settled down to a close encounter with Lincoln leading at the first break 15-10, Gators closed the gap slightly by half-time through the efforts of Oliver Carran (12) and Taripi Neilson (11). Lincoln’s James Cawthorn had a quiet game restricted to just 11 points whereas he usually glides in 25-35 points but sunk some telling free throws late in the game as Gators fought back through the efforts of Daniel Johnson with 13 points.

Rangiora High beats Pioneer 84-41

Rangiora High produced one of its best performances so far this season in beating Pioneer 84-41. All nine players scored with four reaching double figures, led by a steadily improving Alex Ross with 12 points, Riley Block and Rupert Jackman both 11 each and Lucas Campbell with 10. After a slow start and leading 13-8 at the first break, Rangiora piled on the points and the pressure to hammer Pioneer 26-12 to extend the lead to 39-20 by half-time. Rangiora recorded another 45 second half points with Ross blasting three triple pointers with ease. Contributions off the bench came from Will Morris-Whyte and Jesse Harding.

Cashmere routs Christs College 99-45

George Love and Kyle Tikao both slotted 23 points with ease as Cashmere fired up against Christs College out at Bishopdale. By quarter-time they had opened up a 31-6 lead and raced away to a 49-16 half-time break. Joemer Altabano (14) made good use of his extra court time for Cashmere while it was Harry Beadel and Louis Mann that struggled to find the net for a game Christ’s College line up.

Wolverines 73 Shirley Spartens 36

Shirley started strong enough running out to a 19-11 first-quarter lead but Jacob Fairhall (11) led a Wolverines challenge in the remainder of the match to run out comfortable winners 73-36 and keep their unbeaten record intact. Chris Johnson (11) and Hayden Murphy (16) responded well for Wolverines whereas Shirley lacked a consistant scorer. Will Grocott fresh from a big effort in the U17 team managed a burst with eight points for Shirley watched by a proud Grand-dad, CBA and BBNZ life member John Grocott. John was seen with a whistle around his neck despite having ‘retired’ last season.

St Bedes 83 Papanui High 78.

Papanui High gave everything it had to try and win its first Under 20 game since its promotion from the Friday night competition. The fast-runing elusive Taylor Britt (38) ducked and dived through slack St Bedes defence to lead his team by example and Michael Chu (12) responded in support. By the first break Papanui was looking in control, leading 30-22 and the response from St Bedes was slow coming. Connor McCrossin (28) found small openings in the Papanui defence that he exploited in full and by half-time had closed the gap to trail 43-44. In the second half Cole Wilson (12) slotted some telling baskets and as St Bedes lifted the intensity on defence Papanui struggled to break through but managed to stay within striking distance. New coach Nick Lahey could be well pleased with the young Papanui side and a win will be not too far away.

North Canterbury prevailed over Aranui Academy 86-48.

North Canterbury had to work a little harder against Aranui Academy which has dropped from the Under 23’s to re-establish itself with many new players. North Canterbury prevailed 86-48. Lawson Morris-Whyte used his height to advantage to run in an impressive 40 points with ease and when he wasn’t rebounding or driving the boards, he even splashed a couple of triples for good measure. Jordan De Winter was his usual tower of strength, defending stoutly and driving the lanes or splashing from behind the arc for his 15 points while Liam Connelly had a more quiet game. By half-time North Canterbury where in control, ahead 48-19, kept up the pressure in the third-quarter to lead 72-26 before relaxing the pressure in the fourth period when Daniel Mills made good use of his extra court time with 11 points.

Wolverines and Middleton Grange lead the U20 grade unbeaten on four wins while both Rangiora and North Canterbury are among six teams in the grade all with three wins and a loss a piece all in the race for a Top eight placing in the play-offs.

Boys High outplays St Andrews 70-47

A tight first quarter saw Boys High narrowly in front 16-14 at the first break and slowly crept ahead 34-24 by half-time with the tall Nathan Campbell (21) using his height and advanced ball skills to good use. Zak De Roo (13) master-minded the Stac attack but was lft to run to far at times and had trouble breaking the Boys High defence. Jayden Chan (11) also executed plays well but lacked support.

Honours were pretty well even in the third period of play but Boys High pulled clear to a comfortable win through the increased efforts of Scott Ralston (13) and Joshua Campbell with 10.

Scorers were:

Middleton Grange Gators 78 (Regan Burnett 18, Zach Lilburne 17) Burnside HS 56 (Oliver Fairbrother 14, Shou Nisbett 13), Lincoln HS 53 (Stu Erskine  25, James Cawthorn 11) Gators 50 (Daniel Johnson 13, Oliver Carran 12, Tarapi Neilson 11) Rangiora HS 84 (Alex Ross 12, Riley Block 11, Rupert Jackman 11, Lucas Campbell 10) Pioneer Pacers 41 (Kyle Spriggs 16, Jeremy Jackson 11), Wolverines 73 (Hayden Murphy 16, Chris Johnston 11, Jacob Fairhall 11) Shirley Spartens 36 (Will Grocott 8 ), Christchurch Boys HS 70 (Nate Campbell 21, Scott Ralston 13, Joshua Campbell 10) St Andrews Coll 47 (Zac De Roo 13, Jayden Chan 11), North Canterbury 86 (Lawson Morris-Whyte 40, Jordan De Winter 15, Daniel Mills 11) Aranui Academy 48 (Javis Ataera 14, Hayden Lee 14 ), Cashmere HS 99 (George Love 23, Kyle Tikao 23, Joemar Altabano 14) Christ’s College 45 (Harry Beadel 11), St Bedes Coll 83 (Conor McCrossin 28, Cole Wilson 21, Lauchie Weston 12) Papanui HS 78 (Taylor Britt 38, Michael Chu 12, Josh Oquenda 11).

Boy’s Under 17

Shirley Spartens and defending champion Burnside White remain in control of the Boys Under 17 grade unbeaten after five rounds while Middleton green and Boys High trail with just the one loss.

Outstanding efforts on Saturday  saw Will Grocott slot 31 points as Shirley Boys accounted for Middleton White 71-41. Grocott is coached by his father David, a former teacher at Burnside while his Grand-father, CBA Life member John Grocott also watched proudly

The defending champion Burnside White strong first half paved the way to a narrow 80-74 win over another strong side from Cashmere Gold.  Kazuki Tsukiji (16) led the early efforts for Burnside while Olver Fairbrother (20) and Kyle Louis (22) stepped up the pressure as the game progressed. Jesse Campbell and Taine Tikao replied to keep Cashmere in touch with 14 points respectively.

Mid-week Men

University had a comfortable win over Special Olympics to take the lead in the MW competition, the only team unbeaten.

After a number of years in the grade the steadily improving Bandits, led by Ben Flintoft, finally cracked arch-rival Checkers with a come-from-behind win in the closing stages to snatch victory 51-46 with Rijjin Valiao (17) doing the damage for Bandits. Checkers where without former Tallblack Paul Isitt and sharp-shooter Terry Brunel. Flintoft came onto the court later in the game despite injured ribs and landed two crucial baskets.

Returning entry Burnham sneaked past Raiders in another hotly contested encounter with the tall soldier, Vince Van Dorn notching 14 points to give Burnham a 45-42 win.

Scorers were:

Goauld  20 The Bishops 0 by forfeit,  Burnham 45 (Vince van Dorn 14, Brad Fraser 14) Raiders 42 (Pete Randle 9), Bandits 51(Rijjin Valiao 17, John Harris 10) Checkers White 46 (Nigel Buchanan 15, Sam McNeill 12, Chris Chapman 11), University 76 (Nick Gee 30, David Baird 26) Special Olympics  66 (Bradley Garner 18, Jason Roberts 10, Tim Thompson10),  Sphinx 96 (James Taylor 21, Jilong Zhang 20, Victor Chu 14) Pioneer 47 (Alex Kelliher 16, Mark Valentine 11), Lincoln University 48 (Matty Risi 16, Fabian Kupe 11, David Crooymans 10) Royals 35 (James McPherson 10).

Mid- week Women

Halswell Red gave little joy as it demolished University 80-14 with a former University Women’s Premier player Gina Papahadjis running in 19 points while two former Canterbury Wildcats Jo Mumm and Sue Bennie showed they still had the moves as they slotted 14 points apiece. Carmel Gunn (18) led her CYA team to a solid 46-19 win over Royals and now leads to a showdown this week between the two unbeaten sides in a replay of last year’s final won by the Halswell Red mean machine.

Scorers were:

CYA 46 (Carmel Gunn 18, Nicole Pickard 12) Royals 19 (Denise Ryan 8),  Checkers 46 (Katelin Russ 14, Nicola Sorrell 11) Hi-Rollers 20 (Aria Café 12), Halswell Red 80 (Gina Papahadjis 19, Jo Mumm 14, Sue Bennie 14) University 11 (Nina Pau 8), Halswell Green 20 Pioneer 0 by forfeit.
