McDonald's Thompson and Whelan Round Three Preview

St. Margaret’s prevailed over Avonside Girls’ High last night 71-59, meaning our Whelan Trophy Divisions are a little clearer now. In the #McDsTT, Papanui eased ahead of Ellesmere 71-55 in a game the late Larry Thompson would have loved to have seen (his son Josh coaches the Ellesmere team, while Papanui High School was his professional place of work).

A couple of double headers are on tap tonight (5:15 and 7:00 tip times unless otherwise mentioned): St. Andrew’s hosts the Christchurch Girls’ High ladies first, and then Christchurch Boys’ High plays the StAC boys in the later game; Ashburton (at 52 Oxford Street) has Rangi Ruru visiting, and then the Rangiora Boys; Kaiapoi’s teams have interesting matchups. First, against their close neighbours from Rangiora, and then the St. Thomas boys; the Middleton Grange ladies host Burnside at 6pm, and then their male counterparts have a chance to win the Dowson Cup off of Burnside at 7:30pm.

In single game action, Villa Maria hosts their first ever game, as Hillmorton visits at 5:15pm, and Ellesmere hosts Cashmere in a game that will decide which team gets the right to move into Division I of the Whelan Trophy. At 6pm Lincoln High is looking for their first win, but will be facing a tough Hillmorton team. At 7pm Cathedral College has a game against Hornby High as part of their open night; St. Bede’s hosts the preseason #1, Christ’s College; and last week’s cardiac kids, Linwood College host Riccarton.
