McDonald's Thompson and Whelan Round 11 Recap

In Division I of the Thompson Trophy, Cashmere continued with their strong play, taking a win over St. Thomas. For the visitors, Izaac Beever led the way with 24p 7r, while Jacob Sue (16p), Mahonri Tauiliili-Pau (15p 7r) and Sam Irving (15p) all reached double figures. Christ’s College had an upset win over Shirley 76-73. The Spartans did have strong games from Sean Kelly (17p), Eacan Westwood (14p), Joel Jeffrey (11p) and Bailey Hern (6p 17r) in the loss.

Middleton Grange has also looked much better in the latter portion of the competition. Getting a win over Ashburton 74-63. Angus McWilliam has come back from an early season injury with a vengeance – 28p 18r, with Jonte Britten (17p) and Pedro Makaafi (10r) filling in around him. Burnside came out on top of Christchurch Boys’ High in a back and forth game 77-70. Toby Gillooly’s 42p and 19r for the visitors being the deciding factor, as he was able to stamp his mark on the finish of the game, collecting crucial rebounds and ensuring his team ran good sets on the offensive end. Isaiah Morris (11p, 7a) was also extremely composed down the stretch. For CBHS, they can take some consolation from the competitive game without their star point guard (Quinn Clinton) playing. Jack Ansell (27p, 8r) and Ben Harris (16p) being the best of Glenn Lang’s bunch.

Division II of the Thompson Trophy had a fantastic game between Hillmorton and Lincoln High, with Inga Solofuti’s Hillmorton team escaping with a narrow 97-94 win. In other action a shorthanded Riccarton High team accounted for Hornby 87-70, despite All-Star Logan Brunton (23p 11r), Joseph Ordonez (18p) and Rylu Dequita (16p) scoring well for the home team.

The Whelan Trophy had the top eight teams confirmed, with two pools now about to play for a chance to compete in the semi-finals. Christchurch Girls’ High headlines Pool A, with Ashburton, Avonside and St. Andrew’s joining them there. Pool B has Rangiora and Rangi Ruru, with Burnside and Middleton Grange. The Bottom Four has Cashmere, Ellesmere, Lincoln and St. Margaret’s.
