Club Basketball Week 4

Week 4

Saturday 16th May

CBA Winter Club Basketball Results

Checkers maintained its lead in the race for the Hoben Trophy when it outpaced Wolverines 79-59 in Men's Premier grade club basketball played at the QE11 Leisure centre on Saturday. Royals kept its unbeaten record in tact with a comfortable 103-63 win over Gators while Atami also outpaced High School Old Boys 103-51.  Checkers and Royals are set to clash on the last Hoban Trophy round on 13th June with the winner likely to claim the Hoben Trophy while perennial champion Atami will need to lift their efforts the previous week when it clashes with arch-rival Checkers to force a possible three way tie.

Royal's Pip Johnston and former NBL player Ben Van Oosten combined well, slotting impressive 24 points apiece while others to respond to the challenge were Awad Gebregziabher and Jordan Simpson. Royals shut down the elusive Cougar Matt Stevenson while Under 23 player Jon Martin made useful court time for the Gators.

The back-bone for Atami ground Old Boys relentlessly as Joel Hart, Paul McFarlin, Ritchie and Scott Howell combined their years of playing together. Hart sunk six threes in his polished 25 points while new comer James Dean slotted three threes in his 13 points.

Checkers marched relentless on with a strong opening quarter, led by the early efforts of play-maker Justin Kent and Willy McVitty while Jeremy Hancock picked up the slack later in the game. Wolverines picked up the pace in the middle stages with Jeremy Charteris (formerly Wright) and Dean Le Warne to the fore but were unable to close the gap on the leaders.

In a top-of-the-table clash in Women's Premier action, Wolverines came from behind in the last few seconds after the clock had been re-set to pip University 67-65 right on the buzzer. These teams are expected to clash in the Patron's trophy final on 6th June. Meanwhile, Minties remained in third place, piping the veteran Royals side 43-41 while North Canterbury notched its second win by thumping Halswell 68-36.

Wolverines opened a 19-14 gap at quarter-time with Erin Rooney in command while Stacey Hickford and Ashlee Rigter led the early University efforts. Melissa Harrison brought University right back in to the game, slotting 13 off her 15 points including three threes in the second spell. The game hung in the balance in the closing quarter and with the scored tied 65-65 the referees reset the time clock for a few precious extra seconds, enough time for Rooney to slot a match winning basket right on full time.

Atami and Gameface Wolfpack remain unbeaten in Men's Division one with Wolfpack drilling the defending champion, Placemakers Wolves 80-44.

Aranui Blue edged clear in Women's Division one, beating last years Grand Final opponent Royals 50-35 while Cashmere recorded its second win, outpacing the previously unbeaten Rangi Ruru 64-55. Checkers recorded back to back wins with a narrow win over Halswell 39-36, thanks to the coaching efforts of Eric Dunn.

Checkers remained unbeaten in Pool A of the Men's Under 23 with a strong 82-61 win over Aranui Academy while Kiwihoops University remain in control of Pool B, beating the previously unbeaten Shirley Boys High U23 85-53. Cashmere High remained unbeaten in Pool A, thumping St Andrews U20 91-45 while Atami, although unbeaten in Pool B, was well beaten by Gameface Wolverines 72-57 in the bye game. The Shirley Boys High U20 team became the second Under 20 side to beat an U23 team, edging out Middleton Grange Gators 55-50.

In the Under 17 competition at Cowles Stadium, Aranui High thumped Linwood/Royals 98-47, Cashmere High outstripped Christ's College 81-52, Ch Ch Boys High Blue hammered Hillmorton High 102-37 and Middleton Grange White scorched past Shirley Boys High 95-59 to remain at the top of the grade with four wins apiece.

CYA and Rebels take an early lead in the Mid-week Women's competition from Aranui and Burnham while Atami and University are still unbeaten in the Men's Mid-week grade.
