Thirteen Canterbury Teams Book National Championship Tickets

Christ’s College, led by Max De Geest and Maxwell Darling, continues to be a force in South Island Basketball when it edged Cashmere High 62-56 in the Grand Final at the AA Secondary Schools Basketball Premierships in Dunedin on Saturday. This was a reversal of the recent Thompson trophy Final when Cashmere defeated Christ’s 62-60.

In the play-off for third Shirley Boys High thumped Waimea College of Nelson 94-47 while Middleton Grange beat Burnside High 58-43 to claim 5th place. All six teams qualify for the National Championships in Palmerston North in October 2-7th.

In the Girls Grand Final, Christchurch Girls’ High was beaten by St Hilda’s of Dunedin 43-58.

Other Girls teams to qualify were Middleton Grange, which pipped Whelan trophy champion Rangi Ruru 67-66 in the third place play-off, and St Andrews College which thumped Otago Girls High 70-48 in the play-off for 5th placing.

Rangiora High boys beat Christchurch Boys’ 73-63 in the play-off for seventh place at the AA Secondary Schools Basketball Premierships in Dunedin on Saturday. Rangiora was edged 75-80 by Burnside and Middleton Grange beat Boys High 79-62 in the 5-8 semi-finals meaning both CBHS and Rangiora narrowly missed on qualifying for the Schick National Championship.

In the key 5-8 Girls Semi-final St. Andrew’s College, spearheaded by Junior Tall-Fern Charlotte Whittaker, beat Rangiora High 82-39, the first time in a long time that Rangiora, a team on the rebuild, failed to qualify.

In the Single A Tournament, another four teams from our competitions qualified, with the Boys’ Final being an all Christchurch contest, with Division II Champion, Hillmorton High defeating Catholic Cathedral College 83-57. The girls’ Single A Premierships were held in Westport. It was a round-robin contest with the top five qualifying for the Schick Championships. Buller High finished unbeaten with a perfect 7-0 record, but was followed by Ellesmere College (6-1), and Hillmorton High (5-2).
