McDonald's Thompson and Whelan Round Eleven Recap

McDonald's Thompson and Whelan Round Eleven Recap

The Shirley Boys’ High Spartans looked to have the Quarter-Final matchup against Ashburton in the bag early on, as they raced out to a 35-12 lead after one quarter, and were up by 24 points heading into the final quarter. This was not the case, as Ashburton gave Shirley all they could handle here, outscoring them 18-33. Shirley escaped with a 94-84 win that far closer than it seemed would be the case. Sean Kelly and Josh Thomson both had 25 points each, with Kelly also dishing out six assists. Hamsa Shire (15p) and Joel Jeffrey (14p) also scoring well for the Spartans. St. Andrew’s finished on a high, as they overcame 21 points from Rchi Lugtu, 16 from Tom Hughes and 12 from Liam McIvor to claim 9th place in Division I 75-66.

In Division II of the Thompson Trophy, Papanui proved they are the team to beat, holding Hornby scoreless in the first quarter (30-0) en-route to an easy 104-27 win. Sam Archibald led all scorers with 37p, while Ben Hussey (18p) and Josh Briones (13p) played well in a game where all of Papanui’s players made it into the scoring column. Ellesmere had an early lead over Hillmorton, but gave up a 17-0 run, and could not reel the well-drilled Tigers team back in, falling 77-50. Ihaia Kendrew (30p), Rhys Kershaw (10p) and Brad Cross (10p) did the bulk of Hillmorton’s damage, while Jerome Taefu (21p) had Bailey Clark and Isaac Nurse (10p each) providing some hope for Ellesmere.

Linwood was not quite able to make a comeback like they did the first time they played against Lincoln, but acquitted themselves well with only seven active players. Rhoi Sanchez (20p), Tangaroa Faletolu (15p 15r), and Dehn Mitchell (16p 7r) the key performers for Linwood College, as Lincoln claimed 9th place 78-70.

Rangi Ruru stamped their claim to the number one seed in the Whelan Trophy competition, with a huge 84-53 win over Middleton Grange. Middleton gave up an 18-4 run in the second quarter, and could never recover, with the depth Rangi Ruru possessed being telling. Esra McGoldrick had 22p, along with Alice Sproat (20p), Connie Taylor (14p) and Bailey Chamberlain (13p) all scoring well. Middleton’s big three of Aimee Book (14p), Megan Ellis (11p) and Lauryn Hippolite (10p) will need to perform better if they face Rangi Ruru again this year. In Division II Hillmorton and Lincoln had a very high scoring game, with the Tigers eventually prevailing 81-77, as they jumped ahead of Lincoln at the start of the fourth quarter. Lincoln’s Samantha McCrone (26p) was well backed up by Maddy Craig (18p) and Kate Herman (16p), while Hillmorton had both Michelle Scott and Kennedy Vallance score 24p each. Holly Iafeta had 19p and Hollie Carlisle-Reeve had 11p.

The semi-final slate is now all set; with Middleton Grange and Cashmere high school hosting the four Division I matches.
