Premier club basketball moved to the new Lions Centre – a converted warehouse across the road from Cowles, and was extremely well lit with a new set of LED lights just installed.

In Men’s Premier club basketball played on Saturday University of Canterbury, spearhead by Paul Stephenson (22) and Josh Petermann with 15 points, repulsed a strong challenge from the Checkers side to win 66-54 after the lead had changed hands in the early stages. University sneaked ahead 30-27 at the turnaround and extended it to 58-39 by the third break before Checkers made a late charge in the fourth.

Lincoln University looks a major threat in this season’s competition finishing with a strong fourth quarter burst to prevail over Atami 82-69. James Cawthorn (24), Ben Williams (16) and James Levings with 14 points were behind the students efforts while Dan Pau’u scored 20 for Atami.

Bold play from teenager Taylor Britt, home from his American college, scored 30 points (13-16) including 3-5 from 3point range and strong rebounding and 17 points from Keiran Ball saw Wolverines outpoint Gators 82-71 despite dominant play by American Stephen Nosworthy with 18 points.

Defending champion Lincoln University looks set to dominate the Women’s premier recording its fourth win, beating Minties 65-38 through the hard work of Tessa Burry with 30 points. Terai Sadler led Halswell to a 55-45 win over University of Canterbury, and Pioneer outstripped Wolverines 81-26.

North Canterbury remained unbeaten but were almost run down by Gators in the final quarter, scrapping home 67-64 after earlier leading 56-45 at the third break. Former Tactix player Gemma Hazeldine produced a dazzling 21 points as her side led 25-13 but that lead was trimmed to 33-25 by the turnaround. A huge foul count against the side began to toll on the team and with Esra McGoldrick having to depart for the Wildcats game just before the break after scoring 10 points, the momentum began to swing towards Gators, led by an action packed 27 points by Megan Ellis.
