University of Canterbury Men’s Premier club basketball team took a giant step towards securing its first Hoben trophy finals berth since 2007 when it came from behind with a massive team effort to outrun and outplay Lincoln University 84-78 in the Middleton Grange new gym on Saturday.

University now leads the Hoben trophy round with four wins and one loss to Pioneer, the other side in contention, with an unbeaten four win record. Lincoln Univeristy drops to third place with three wins and two losses. The Hoben trophy final is scheduled for June 18th.The remaining games in round five will be played this upcoming Saturday with Pioneer playing Atami and Gators up against Checkers.

LU settled into its rhythm very quickly to take a 20-12 lead at quarter-time but the Canterbury students were just starting to gel with huge efforts on defence and offence from Justin Kent and Josh Petermann, prodding the Lincoln Univeristy defence. After UC closed the gap to trail 37-40 at half-time it was point for point, basket for basket, with Nick Erwood and James Cawthorn to the fore for Lincoln and Karl Magon adding depth to Canterbury University attack. Lincoln’s effort fell away after the game was tied 60-60 at the third interval, leaving only Ram Xavier Shaw (18) to continue the battle for Lincoln against the University dominance on the boards, led by Brent Fisher who scored 26 points. With five minutes to play back to back triples from Magon and Petermann pushed Canterbury to a 76-67 lead. Cawthorn (19) and Erwood (15) each landed triples for Lincoln in the closing moments to no avail.
