Canterbury Patagonia Cup Team Finalised
The Canterbury Men’s representative team to play in the 2016 Patagonia Cup Tournament in Bahia Blanca Argentina has been finalised. The team features six players with NBL experience, Marty Davison who has been a starter for the Rams, Brent Fisher, Sam Crozier and James Cawthorn who have all had Rams or Cougars opportunities and Aled Jones and Xavier Shaw who have both played for the Taranaki Mountain-Airs.
The team contains four current Lincoln Scholarship athletes: James Cawthorn; Nick Erwood; James Levings; and Xavier Shaw, a former scholarship athlete in Aled Jones. The remainder of the team is made up of players from the Premier Men’s grade Marty Davison (Pioneer), Brent Fisher (UC), Nathan Campbell (UC), Oli Davies (Pioneer) and Sam Crozier (Formally UC).
Erwood, Levings and Cawthorn were also on the National Championship Winning U23 side in 2015.
The tournament is held in conjunction with Rugby, Hockey and Softball at the El Nacional Club in Bahia Blanca. HSOB Rugby will attend again and have been going biannually since 1999, Canterbury Women’s Hockey has also been in the past. This will be the second time Canterbury Basketball has sent a team having attended in 2014. Coach Terry Brunel, who went as Bert Knop’s assistant in 2014, describes the tournament as a level just below the NBL with the clubs containing a similar youth and experience mix to the Canterbury side. “We hope to win more game this time having had no idea of the level in 2014 and struggling initially with the style of play over there. We also have four players who went last time (Davison, Crozier, Fisher and Erwood) so they will be able to prepare the others for the level of competition”.
The team leaves on the 2nd February and returns on the 18th February. They are playing in the Rams Summer Development League throughout Oct – December and will have two warm up games in Buenos Aries on route.
