Wolverines made an emphatic start to the Men’s Premier championship repulsing a strong comeback from the Dave Langrell led Pioneer before prevailing 98-90 in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. University of Canterbury survived a strong late challenge from Atami, hanging on to escape with a narrow 78-76 win while defending champion Checkers, playing without Tall Black trialist Ethan Rusbatch, survived a late challenge from Gators before winning 78-68.

After its shock loss to University in the Patron’s trophy final, North Canterbury bounced back to overwhelm Pioneer 77-34 in the opening Women’s Premier championship round game, despite only having six available players. Lincoln University showed that  they are not going to surrender their championship title too easily, coming back from trailing their Canterbury University counterparts 19-36 at half-time to almost steal a win, before losing 55-58 while Minties too came back against Gators, running out of time with Gators scraping home 35-34.

Dave Langrell set the pattern early, carrying the game to Wolverines and chalked up 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists and with current Ram Marty Davison running hot with 22 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, Pioneer should have taken the game against Wolverines by the scuff off the neck. Pioneer led 20-17 at the first break but resilient defence and fast penetrating moves from Wolverines Mike Kinley (16pts, 9R, 5A), Richard Roger (25), David Gibb (22 pts, 9R) and a lively 15 points and nine rebounds from American bound Taylor Britt guided Wolverines to come back strongly and a powerful second half win. While Wolverines shot 37 from 77 attempts (48%) Pioneer slumped to a poor 39% - 32 from 83 attempts. Pioneer also picked up points from turnovers (25-19) and points off the bench (22-6) but Wolverines all round teamwork saw it safely home.

In a game of changing fortunes University led Atami 23-8 at quarter-time, Atami took the second quarter 28-19 to trail 36-42 at the turnaround, University, with Jeremy Hancock (18) hungry for the ball regained the initiative to lead 67-50 at three-quarter-time while Atami outpointed the students 26-10 in the final quarter, taking and losing the lead in the closing minutes before University scraped home from the charity line. Willem Tolhoek and Matt Campbell stood out for the students while the veteran Rich Howell led Atami by example with 17 points and nine rebounds. Rusty Thomson added a valuable 17 points along with Josh Petermann’s 18.

Nat Connell returned to lead Checkers with 16 points while Isaac Silberry had his best game with 18. Gators Cam Chalmers was contained to 17 points while Middleton Grange’s Jackson Stent notched 14 points.

Wildcats coach, Lori McDaniel, played an anchor role for North Canterbury on defence sending her young charges racing away on the fastbreak, Emily Baker notching 20 points and Wildcat Hayley Gray a valuable 19 points against Pioneer. The veteran Pip Connell led University with 15 points with support from Gina Papahadjis with 12 while Annastasia Tauamiti replied with 13 for Lincoln.

Lincoln Bulls continued to dominate the Men's Under 23 competition as it enters the second round but had to work harder in the second spell to repulse a strong challenge from Gators Green winning 91-67 after only leading 45-42 at the turnaround.
