Men’s Premier Championship

Atami had to pick up the pace in the second spell to repulse a strong challenge from Gators, pulling away in the final quarter to win 89-74 in the last round robin game of the Men’s Premier club basketball championship played in Bishopdale YMCA on Saturday.

The defending champion Checkers, forced to play without the injured brothers, Bede Marsters and Ethan Rusbatch, failed to win a semi-final berth and were well beaten by a fired up University 81-66 which jumps to third place and a semi-final this Saturday against second placed Wolverines. Meanwhile Wolverines started sluggishly against Lincoln College but powered away in the last quarter to win 85-59. Atami now plays Gators in the 1 v 4 Semi.

University eliminates Checkers 81-66

In the crucial game between Checkers and University the students started strongly to lead 21-18 at the first break through the second with the efforts of Matt Campbell, who flew home from his studies at Victoria University. Matt was supported from the hard-working Brent Fisher.

Daniel Pau’u helped University to widen the gap in the second spell penetrating the Checkers defence while Harley Campbell shot a three pointer as the students forged a handy 42-29 lead by half-time. Checkers ‘danger-man’, Nat Connell was closely marked, limiting him to just 10 points. His former Royals and NBL team-mate Ben Van Oosten (12) broke through tight University defence as Checkers endeavoured to come back but were thwarted by outside bombs from Jordan Kauta, Marty Davison and Matt Campbell. Checkers still trailed 46-57 by the final break but were forced to foul to gain possession and the students capitalised sinking eight free throws to widen the margin. Tyson Silberry (12) and Coree McGrath continued their hard efforts in the final quarter for Checkers in the closing stages but University remained cool under pressure to jump to third place in the competition.

Atami comes back to beat Gators 89-74

Gators forced the pace in the early stages leading 21-16 by the first break, through the efforts of Jozeph Knottenbelt and Chris Duthie. Atami were missing three key players, and were a little slow to respond. Bryn McLennan having already ran to exhaustion in the Under 23 Quarter-final, managed to pick up the pace for Atami. Bryn, with help from Sam Dobbs, started to take control of the boards and Atami slowly narrowed the gap and sneaked ahead 41-39 at the turnaround. Jamin Thomas had stepped up for Gators with three good baskets. Rusty Thompson found range in the third quarter while the ever reliable Ritchie Howell penetrated the sluggish Gators defence to put Atami marginally ahead. Duthie tried in vain to keep Gators in the match, scoring 22 points under tremendous pressure from the roving Atami defence. Gators kept it tight and only trailed 61-64 by three-quarter time. However, Thompson hit several three’s adding to another from Dobbs, which rounded out the match for Atami.

Lincoln University bows out before succumbing 59-85

Lincoln University were looking for an upset to finish their season on a high, taking a handy 36-31 lead at the turnaround after the first quarter was levelled 19-19. After gaining some early fouls Lincoln’s whiz kid Nick Erwood was benched for most of the first half and upon his return picked up the pace while Manuel Nunez-Tenasque plied a cameo slotting 16 points and grabbing a double with 10 rebounds in his last appearance at the Premier level. Oli Davies looked sharp as he weaved and turned through Lincoln’s defence while Dene Le Warne found range to top 17 points to add to his seven rebounds. Wolverines opened the flood gates in the final quarter piling on 36 points to the solitary efforts of Nunez for Lincoln.

Women’s Premier Championship

Halswell had to lift its efforts to repel a late fight-back from a depleted Minties before winning the Women’s Premier championship encounter 49-40. Lincoln which had already secured fourth place, thumped Pioneer 65-28, while University called on some mid-week players before beating Gators 41-29.

Top qualifier Halswell meets Lincoln in this Saturday’s Semi-final while Minties will be looking to have the services of live-wire Jemma Hazeldene as it clashes with the three times defending champion in the other semi. University have a very proud record of winning six out of the last seven Women’s Premier Grand-finals they played.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

CBA Mens’ U23 Reports – Playoffs Round 1

#3 – Lincoln University v #6 – North Canterbury (105 – 47)

An energized Lincoln University destroyed North Canterbury by 58 points in the first of the two knockout games this weekend. Lincoln got off to a fast start, leading 25 -10 after the first period and didn’t let up, winning every subsequent quarter, highlighted by a 35 point effort in the third. NC’s consistent swingman Scott Edwards failed to fire, held to a measly 3/22 FG shooting but still managed 10 points, whilst Sam Haigh-Ward (11 points), Ben Buckendahl (10 points) and Angus Forbes (10 points, 16 reb) all hit the double figure mark. For Lincoln, instant offense machine Nick ‘the der’ Erwood put up his obligatory double-double (31 points, 12/17 FG, 10 reb) and was aided by wrecking ball Pat Fraser (23 points, 16 reb), jack-of-all-trades Joe King (14 points) and Steve Novak-lookalike Zach Hollis (10 points).

#4 – Atami v #5 – Varsity (63 – 57)

Heading into the game on a 7-game win streak, the university students had high hopes of gaining a semi final berth, but were met with a determined effort from the 5-strong Atami team, falling in a heartbreaking 6-point defeat, 63 – 57. Former Varsity-now-turned-Atami players Cam Chalmers (21 points) and Bryn McLennan (16 points) were the chief destroyers for the men in black, whilst captain Alex Dobbs had 18 points and big man Lucas Hill pulled down a hefty 18 boards. The Varsity boys were down 16 points leading into the final quarter but didn’t give up, thanks to some timely three balls from the ex-Cashmere High duo of Ed Burry and Karl Magon (20 points). However, the margin was too big of a deficit to overcome and the Atami team held strong, despite having 2 of their players on 4 fouls in the last 5 minutes. Varsity centre Ollie Crawford had another strong game (15 points, 11 reb) and captain Rowan Feeney dropped 10 points in his final U23 game ever.

Checkers v Royals (93 – 74) - 7th v 8th placing game

Checkers outran Royals in a high scoring match to gain 7th place, winning 93 – 74. Five Checkers players notched double digit scoring numbers – Jake Naylor (20), Isaac Silberry (15), Aidan Ryan (14), Tyson Silberry (14) and Jim McNabb (11). Royals’ superstar Simon Hodgson was limited to only 16 points, but Hugh Munro (17 points) and Josh Burke (12 points) contributed strongly.
