Our Sharon proved how just valuable she is to all you club basketballers and what an extra-extraordinaire stats person she is on Saturday. Not only did she miss going to Auckland for a work conference, she was seen taking stats for two games at once when one Men’s game ran late due to an injury break earlier in the day and the starting of another Men’s Prem game on time on the other court. It was amazing to watch. Well done Sharon and thanks for the dedication!!!!.

Other contributions from clubs with stats and copy would be appreciated and used whenever possible.  Email: bruceymartin@hotmail.com

Men’s Premier Championship

In a day of upsets all around University continued its improved efforts to outplay a dis-organised Gators 85-65 in the Men’s Premier club basketball championship played in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Long term champion Atami became top qualifier for the Semi-Finals on September 14th with a convincing 87-51 win over cellar-dwellar Lincoln University while Wolverines secured second placing and semi berth with a round still to go this Saturday when it defeated a badly depleted defending champion Checkers 78-64.

Checkers have now lost the two brothers, Ethan Rusbatch (kneecap) and Bede Marsters (double leg fracture) with season ending injuries while Nat Connell was sidelined short term after minor surgery on a troubled hip. Checkers now face a tough encounter this Saturday against a fired up University and also has the disadvantage of needing to beat University by more than seven points. Depending on the result of the Atami/Gators game, University could end up as high as third and a semi against Wolverines.

Wolverines 78 Checkers 68

Ben Teale stepped up for Checkers, slotting a valuable 20 points to keep Checkers in touch with a very determined Wolverines and with support from the Silbery brothers, Tyson and Isaac, managed to level the game 20-20 at quarter-time. Michael Kinley led the Wolverines response, throwing his body everywhere chasing the loose ball while Lionel Hopgood got inside the Checkers defence. Jacob Naylor kept Checkers in touch in the second quarter while the sharp shooting Joel Stratford (17) piled on the points and pressure for Wolverines, the game locked 36-36 by the turn around. Even coach Kenney Perkins had to spend quite some time on the court to aid his Checkers team.

Wolverines stretched the Checkers defence as it piled on the points in the third-quarter through the on-going efforts of Hopgood, energetic defence from James Leving and some outside bombs from Nino Nabong while Ben Van Oosten penetrated for Checkers to slow the ever increasing scoreline. By the third break Wolverines where in control 59-51 and Levings capped off a solid game with several enterprising baskets.

Master coach Jamie Graham sent in this report

The Premier boys secured 2nd place overall with a scrappy win over defending champs Checkers 78 - 68.
Checkers who had several key players out with injury didn't go down without a fight as the first 2 Qtrs stayed even at 18 - 18 and 36 - 36.
The Wolfpack started to pull away in the third as Lionel Hopgood (16pts) hit a 3, followed by 2 from Nino Nabong (9pts) and another from Joel Stratford (17pts) as they went into the 4th up 59 - 51.
Captain Mike Kinley (14pts) and James Levings (10pts) helped keep Checkers on the back foot with great intensity on defence and execution of the offence as they cruised home for the win.
Memorable moment in this game was watching Lionel Hopgood go ‘Dikembe Mutombo’ on Checkers as he picked up 6 blocks.

Atami bounces back to beat Lincoln 87-51

Atami bounced strongly with more determination after last week’s loss to Wolverines, racing to a 24-10 first break through the efforts of Scott Howell and Nathan Hyde while Lincoln, unable to break the defence tried several outside shots. Ritchie Howell and Sam Dobbs added to Lincoln’s woes in the second quarter while Lincoln’s playmakers Aled Jones and Nick Erwood were closely marked. Manuel Nunez-Tenasque stepped up for Lincoln managing a valuable 14 points and nine rebounds. Lincoln was forced to bench Jones with four fouls and an out of touch Erwood and took advantage to take a 64-37 lead by three-quarter time and extend the lead in the final quarter. Atami capitalised with 16-4 from turnovers and 39-27 points off the bench and also led second chance points 15-9.

University knocks Gators down

University upped the pressure in the second quarter after marginally ahead 17-16 and raced to a 46-26 half-time lead with little response from a lack-lustre Gators. Gators have lost the use of the sharp-shooting Jordan Duggan but its big men failed to get inside the students defences and the elusive Chris Duthie was tightly contained. The ever alert Marty Davison marshalled the University moves well with Sam Crozier and Brent Fisher on hand to complete the moves. Daniel Pau’u and Nathan Campbell added to the students strengths about the court.

While Matt Stevenson was the main contributor in the first half for Gators Jeremy Kench and Kaye McKee led a small but brief comeback in the third period, reducing the margin by five points, trailing 43-58. The last quarter was neck and neck with Stevenson finishing off some strong moves for Gators while University added 10 vital points from the charity line to keep their nose in front.

Women’s Premier Championship

Championship leader and Patron’s trophy winner Halswell held of a determined challenge from triple defending women’s premier champion University (six titles in the last seven seasons) before winning 42-37. Lincoln University came from behind with a strong second-half to defeat Minties 56-47 and book fourth place in the semi’s on September 14th. In a bottom of the table clash Gators outpointed a depleted Pioneer 45-44.

Halswell outpoints University 42-37

In a tight defencive game Halswell established a 21-17 led by the turnaround against Univesrity through the efforts of Marinda Van Vuuren and the hard-working Emily Baker while University found it difficult to break the Halswell defence. Former Wildcat Bridgett Salkeld led the Halswell challenge in the second spell while current Wildcat Rosanna Katene led the students reply by example. Halswell manage to maintain a five point buffer most of the second spell to maintain its lead in the championship round.

Lincoln fights back to upset Minties 56-47

Minties made a positive start against Lincoln taking a 14-8 through the efforts of Olivia Bensley and Sally-Anne Tull and received strong support from division two players Estelle Uren and Amiria Rule, a New Zealand International rugby player. With Jemma Hazeldene absent and Hayley Gray also not available Minties began to struggle but were still ahead 29-22 at the turn around when Lincoln made its moves, led by captain Hannah Turton (16) and solid efforts from Bridgette Lawn and Charissa Theyers to win by nine points and secure a semi-final berth against Halswell with a final round still to play.

Gators pips Pioneer 45-44

Gators have fort long and hard all season, guided by the elusive Rachel Harrison and under the excellent coaching of Blue (Eric) Rees but like most teams numbers are dropping off near the season end. Chelsea Beaton stepped up to give Gators an early start and Anastasia Taumiti broke through sluggish Pioneer defence to take a handy 21-15 lead going into the first break. Pioneer too was reduced to five players and Emma Symon and Abby Rutledge responded to the challenge.

After trailing 23-32 at the turn around, Pioneer continued to fight back but Kimberley Heron lifted her efforts to keep Gators ahead, eventually holding on for a narrow 54-44 win.

Scorers were:

Halswell 42 (Emily Baker 19) University 37 (Rosanna Katene 10). HT: 21-17. Lincoln University 56 (Hannah Turton 17, Bridgette Lawn 10, Charissa Theyers 10) Minties 47 (Olivia Bensley 14, Sally-Anne Tull 13). Men’s Division One

Top six round robin

With perennial champion Placemakers Wolves outpointing arch-rival Wolverines 72-68 in a classic battle Placemakers, Wolverines and Atami have secured a semi-final berth on September 15th leaving this week’s battle between University and Checkers to sort out the fourth qualifying spot. Top qualifying spot should go Placemakers but an unexpected loss could see three teams tied with a losing margin of more than four needed to change the pecking order.

Master coach Jamie Graham sent in this report on the classic matchup between his Wolverines side and stablemate Placemakers Wolves.

A lack of discipline and poor execution again cost the Div 1 men as they lost their top of the table clash with the Placemakers Wolves 72 - 68.
Wolverines where up by as many as 10 in the first half as Paul Havill (21pts) and Jamie Graham (14pts, 4 3pters) shot the ball well from the outside.
But the Placemakers Wolves showed why they are the champs as they poured on the pressure in the third taking the lead going into the final qtr.
It was a tense 4th qtr as both teams battled to keep the number 1 spot, but in the end the superiority of the Wolves showed and the Wolverines where once again left to lick their wounds.

University 76 HSOB 71

Old Boys were slow to shut down the elusive Chris Grant who slotted 29 points, including the go ahead basket in the final minute for University with Tim Richardson dominating the rebounds while returning 18 Points. Martin Maunsell (16) kept the Old Boys challenge going, including hitting three consecutive three pointers in the third stanza.

 Atami 93 Checkers 51

James Burrows (19) and the veteran Ivan Hill slotted a key 18 points as Atami accounted for Checkers 93-51. Checkers now have to account for the experienced University team to progress to the Semi’s.

CBA U23 Mens’ Reports – Round 15

Brought to you by Dan Chan and Raghav Pratap

Checkers v North Canterbury (58 - 61)

The defending champions were sent packing in dramatic fashion in their knockout encounter against North Canterbury, falling 61 - 58. A slow first half by Checkers saw NC hold a 2-point lead at the half with specialist sharpshooter Liam Connelly (25 points, 4 3pt) causing a heap of grief from behind the three point line. A revitalised effort in the third quarter, sparked by Jake Naylor (12 points) and the twins Isaac (10 points) and Tyson (12 points) Silberry, saw Checkers end the quarter up 49 – 43. However, poor decision making in the fourth by the men in red led to easy transition efforts from NC’s Anton Tureav (10 points) as the country lads clinched a spot in next week’s quarter final against Lincoln University.

Wolverines v Lincoln University (79 – 64)

After an enthralling duel between these two heavyweights in their previous matchup, this bout was a slugfest as both teams looked to stamp their authority early, trading blows most way through the first quarter. Some quickfire treys from scoring machine Oli Davies (35 points) and lightning quick guard Taylor Britt saw Wolves edge ahead, but the stubborn Lincoln Bulls showed great resistance with the scholarship ‘Big Three’ of Nick Erwood (16 points, 11 reb), Aled Jones (18 points) and Joe King (11 points) all notching double figures. Lincoln’s resident seven footer Vinnie George also toiled hard toward a double-double (10 points, 13reb). However, the reintroduction of Wolves big man Kieran Ball sparked new life into the Wolfpack’s defense, proving a menace on the boards and also recording a game high 3 blocks. Wolves jack-of-all-trades guard James Levings chipped in with 17 crucial points. The cohesion showed by the young wolves squad in the latter stages of the game proved to be too much for a struggling Lincoln side who shot a measly 25/85 FG, as Wolverines were able to clinch the win by 15 points and earned the Sprite Spark of the Game for their 14-0 run late in the 3rd quarter. This result means Wolves were able to claim outright second on the ladder, and earn a timely and much needed break with a handful of their young superstars all participating in the Secondary School Prems this coming weekend.

Atami v Gators (60 – 75)

Gators comfortably dispatched a determined Atami outfit, 75 – 60, as they got back onto track after last week’s upset loss. Gators took a decisive early lead, up 23 – 10 at the end of the first, thanks to ten points in the quarter from centre Jamin Thomas, who ended the game with 12 points. However, Atami fought back hard to win the next quarter – with the scoring duo of Cam Chalmers (12 points) and Bryn McLennan (17 points) leading the way – but were still down 37 – 27 at the halfway point. Gators proceeded to extend the lead down the stretch with timely buckets from athletic swingman Jozef Knottenbelt (18 points), recent U23 National Tournament team guard Chris Duthie (17 points) and ever present midrange bank threat Alex Jellie (10 points) as they pulled away to eventually win by 15 points.

Varsity v Royals (80 – 79 OT)

Varsity pipped a tireless and energized Royals team at the post for a thrilling 1 point victory in overtime, as they overcame trying circumstances (only 5 players) to win 80 – 79. The game was tight throughout - epitomized by the fact that there were 22 lead changes, and 9 ties – with Varsity up 1 point at the end of the first quarter. However, the men in blue fought back in the second, due to some sweet jumpers from Hugh Munro (13 points) and Josh Burke (12 points), to lead at halftime, 35 – 30. The students owned the 3rd quarter, showing off some impressive outside shooting with Harley Campbell (20 points) and Jordyn Kauta (18 points, 4 3PT, 10 reb) all connecting from deep as Varsity took a 4-point lead heading into the final period. But it was all Royals’ Simon Hodgson time in the fourth as he willed his team to level the score at 68-all at the end of regulation. Hodgson was everywhere on the court and it showed with his stat line of 36 points, 5 3PT, 50% FG, 9 assists and 7 steals. In overtime, it was a see-sawing affair which led to a tense finish. Varsity were up 1 point with 0.9s remaining but Varsity point guard Dan Chan almost went from hero to zero as he bricked a free throw allowing Royals one more shot for the game – luckily for the students, Hodgson’s deep turnaround fadeaway three just skimmed the rim. The standouts for Varsity were sneaky forward Finbar Argus (19 points, 9/14 FG, 17 reb) and potential MVP candidate Ollie Crawford (18 points, 50% FG, 29 reb).

Master coach Jamie Graham sent in this report on Wolverines clash with Lincoln

The Wolverines U23 match against Lincoln University had a lot riding on it with winner going straight through to the Semi and Loser having to play a Qtr Final.
The match began at a hectic pace with both teams scoring easy early. It was basket for basket as the 1st qtr ended at 20 all.
Taylor Britt (8pts) started the second qtr strong nailing 2 3pters and a lovely floater over 7 foot Vincent George.... The Wolverines defence started to tighten up as they began to pull away leading at the half 37 - 32.
The 3rd qtr belonged to Oli Davies (35pts, 4 asst) as he scored 15pts of the 17pts scored including 3 3pters as the Wolfpack extended the lead to 10pts going into the final qtr, 54 - 44.
The Wolves piled on the pressure in the 4th as they extended their lead to 15 cruising to victory 79 - 64.
Kieran Ball (9pts, 12reb) in his first game back from what looked like a season ending injury and James Levings (17pts, 7reb, 5asst) had huge games as everyone contributed in the win.
One of the highlight's was watching The Pratap Knight (0pts, 11reb, 1block) sending his younger brother's shot Raghav, back down his throat with a monster block.

BOTTOM FIVE ELIMINATION PLAY-OFFS

North Canterbury puts out defending champion Checkers 61-58 by Bruce Martin

In the Men’s Under 23 grade in Cowles stadium North Canterbury put out the defending champion Checkers in an Elimination play-off encounter which sorted out the two teams from the bottom five to contest the Quarter-finals this Saturday. North Canterbury came withering back in the final quarter to eclipse Checkers 61-58 through the sharp-shooting prowess of Liam Connelly who shot 25 points. Checkers led the first quarter 16-14 but the slower starting Northern boys were kept in touch by outside shooting from Reid Van Keulen, Connelly and Scott Edwards. Angus Forbes added to the action in the second spell with more pressure baskets from Connelly and Van Keulen, North Canterbury took a 33-31 half-time lead. Isaac and Tyson Silberry led a Checkers comeback in the third but a mighty team effort from North Canterbury with further hard work from Angus Forbes saw the Northerners outpoint Checkers 18-8 in the last quarter to claim the game and a Quarter-final berth against the strong Lincoln University side this Saturday.

Men’s Under 20

In the very competitive Men’s Under 20 schools grade, Middleton remained unbeaten, dispatching Wolverines 86-47 in the 1 v 8 Quarter-finals, Burnside fired up to thump St Andrews 75-44, Boys High repulsed a strong last minute challenge from North Canterbury, winning 70-66 while a more determined Lincoln High upset Cashmere High 74-63.

TOP EIGHT QUARTER-FINALS

1 v 8 Middleton Grange overpowered Wolverines 86-47

Middleton Grange takes on a firm favourite position for the coming play-offs and is the team to beat as it accounted for a lack-lustre Wolverines easily 86-47. Zach Lilburne and Ihaka Pink quickly penetrated sluggish Wolverines defence to race to a 22 -7 first-quarter lead and with additional help from Regan Burnett extended it to 50-22 by the half-time break. Jacob Fairhall and Hayden Murphy toiled long and hard for Wolverines while Aaron Gunstone was the only Wolverines to break the defence and slot 13 points. Lilburne was busy at both ends of the court, defending his patch strongly and being on hand for the easiest of paces to sink 22 points while Pink distributed the ball well as well as slipping in a handy 16 points.

2 v 5. Burnside swung into top gear to down Stac 75-44

Being one of the top seeds at this week’s SS Premierships in Nelson, Burnside has been well prepared by coach Joe Hammond and after some mediocre efforts in the last month put that behind them as they ran full tilt at the unpredictable St Andrews side and almost blew them of the court. Whle Shou Nisbet and Jahnim Campbell set the moves Oliver Fairbrother got inside the Stac defence for an easy pass under the basket slotting 17 points. Jahnim Campbell took his chances too as the gaps opened up leaving his marker well behind.

St Andrews toiled hard and long but was always in catch-up mode and well contained by a swarming Burnside defence. After being ahead 15-14 at the first break Burnside rattled in 20 points to just four to St Andrews with the small Jayden Chan left to pick up the pieces and return the ball under constant Burnside pressure.

3 v 6  Lincoln upsets Cashmere 74-63

Kyle Tikao led cashmere’s early effort while Sam Riley got Lincoln High into action with Lincoln sneaking ahead 15-14 at quarter break. James Cawthorn then started to let loose for Lincoln, free from a bothersome ankle injury to glide through slack Cashmere defence as Lincoln started to pull away, leading 40-29 by the turnaround. Stu Erskine followed in hunting the loose ball to add to the depth of the Lincoln’s offensive moves. The highly experienced Assistant coach for Cashmere, Russell McCormack did all he could to spring some life into Cashmere but Lincoln’s defence was strong. Alex Irvine put in a mammoth effort all around the court setting moves, collecting stray balls and sneaking in a handy 19 points while Tikao produced 19.

Cashmere held ground in the second spell with Lincoln leading each of the last two periods by one point but was unable to bridge the gap and head to the SS Premierships without a semi to come back to.

4v 5 Boys High repulses last minute effort from North Canterbury to win 70-66

Hopes were high as the North Canterbury Under 20’s side took on Christchurch Boys High in the 4v5 quarter-final and things were not looking so promising as they trailed 13-18 at the first break despite some pressure baskets from Lawson Morris-Whyte. North Canterbury closed the gap a little in the second-quarter, still trailing 34-36 but the gap opened further as they slipped behind 49-53 by the third break, not helped by costly turnovers from a number of players. TheBoys High captain Nathan Campbell stepped up the pressure on North Canterbury with his younger teammates responding well under pressure and normally easy baskets began to miss the target for North Canterbury. Connelly was restricted to just 13 points and Lawson finished with a hard-earned 26. Jordan De Winter and Daniel Millz lifted North Canterbury for one final assault in the last few minutes but in pushing for a desparate basket and rebound with 51 seconds remaining Millz landed with a thump, suffering a compressed disc and two fractured elbow bones. When the game resumed, Andre Tamagushiku slotted a key three pointer to give Boys High victory 70-66 and to rob North Canterbury of a place in the semi’s and put an end to a promising season.

Scott Ralston added a handy 11 points for Boys High, ready to step up as required while Joshua Campbell and Josh Chin were never far from the action.

The matriarch of the Royals club, Cathy Hyland, has her side all primed and ready to take on all challenges in the play-offs ahead. The 2009 champion side is still much intact and primed not to let the title slip away like it did against Checkers in last year’s final when it was beaten 54-49.

Title holder Checkers has been Royals closest opposition this season  with Royals winning 56-49 and 75-62 while the margins in most other games have been many times bigger. Checkers also lost to arch-rival Minties in round one

Halswell has had a disappointing season by its standard and will not make the play-offs leaving this weeks results to sort out the pecking order with Minties, Checkers and Gators separated by one point. In this Sunday’s final round robin match-up Checkers should account for Gators and Minties beat Halswell leaving Royals and Gators in the 1v4 semi and Checkers and Minties in the other semi on September 15th.

Scorers were:

Royals 75 (Pina Lissaman 17, Jo Casey 15) Checkers 62 (Helen Neighbourr 26, Shaylyn Davis 12), Gators 45 (Lori Haisty 17, Megan Lane 10) Halswell 28 (Andrea Velandia 10). Bye: Minties.

Mid-week Men

Raiders 49 The Bishops 31

Raiders made a more determined effort to capture a top four semi-final berth accounting for The Bishops with a solid all round team game. Jason Ray had a busy night all around the court and look out Checkers when Matt Havill takes control of the boards for Raiders. Raiders cunning defence shut down the quick firing Jack McDougall and slowing the pace while containing Simon Meggat, another regular contributor for The Bishops.

Checkers White slips (Ed – not the verb I’d use) past Burnham 57-38

Checkers White lifted up its momentum as the fast running army boys from Burnham thrust everything at them. Sam McNeil exploded with back to back triple pointers late in the first half to give Checkers a handy 24-13 half-time lead while Vince Lawford and Brad Fraser where left to set up the moves for the soldiers. Former Canterbury Ram Paul Isitt got much of the action for Checkers in the second spell running in a stream of baskets early in the second spell to top the scoring with 20 points while the usually energetic Nigel Buchanan had a much quieter game.

With Raiders upsetting Burnham several weeks earlier in meant that the defending champiom University which had a win by forfeit over Bandits, topped the ladder alongside Checkers but on the head to head finished in first place and will now meet Burnham while Checkers White plays Raiders in the other Semi-final this Wednesday night.
