Men’s Premier Championship

Wolverines threw the Men’s Premier club basketball championship wide open when it came from behind with a blistering final-quarter challenge to upset the previously unbeaten Atami 73-65 in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. The double defending champion Checkers continued its climb up the table with a more determined 74-61 thumping of Gators while a re-vitalised University hammered a depleted Lincoln University 90-71.

Atami, Gators and Wolverines sit more comfortably placed for a semi-final berth on September 14th some interesting challenges lies ahead for both University and Checkers, both on the rise with improved performances in recent weeks and it is likely to come down to their clash on September 7th to sort out the fourth semi-final qualifying place.

Meanwhile Premier basketball takes a break this Saturday while players are at the Under 23 Nationals in Tauranga.

Wolverines snatches an upset victory over Atami 73-65

Master coach Jamie Graham was ecstatic by the way his side came back when all appeared lost to beat arch-rival Atami. With a number of players injured and several heading overseas before the season ends life will be difficult for Wolverines to re-produce such a giant-killing effort.

Atami led comfortably 18-12 by the first break and maintained a six point advantage 34-28 at the turnaround through the efforts of Ritchie Howell and Rusty Thompson. Sam Dobbs fired up a lack-lustre Atami in the third quarter with some strong finishing and rebounding, taking Atami to a sound 59-47 at three-quarter time. Slowly and methodically Wolverines kept up the pressure in the final quarter but it was only three minutes out before they levelled 63-63 and began to sense a taste of an upset. Wolverines intensity lifted with Lionel Hopgood grabbing many rebounds, putting back better shots while Michael Kinley threw his body everywhere to chase the loose ball. Joel Stratford and Dean Le Warne dropped in several good baskets before Kinley splashed a triple pointer, quickly followed by one by Stratford after several misses to nudge ahead. Atami were forced to foul to stop the clock allowing Wolverines to consolidate its lead in the closing moments.

Master Coach Jamie Graham added his report

With the Wolverines U23's already beating one undefeated team during the day, the Premier boys tried to do the same as they took on the might of the undefeated Atami. A team they have only beaten once in the entire Wolverines history, spanning over a decade. That win coming in 2010 in a round robin game 85 - 77, which is also the only year the boys have been in the Premier Championship Final which they lost to Atami.

Sorry Jamie, it was the 2009 Grand Final that Gameface Wolverines lost to Atami 87-70
And as the game began it looked as though history would repeat itself as the boys got down early, trailing by 6pts at the end of the 1st qtr, 18 - 12.
The boys managed to stay with Atami in the 2nd qtr as both teams scored 16pts and Atami still leading by 6, 34 - 28.
Atami began to lift their intensity to start the 3rd and began to pull away as the Wolfpack found themselves down by as many as 16pts as careless turnovers started to mount.
Some stern words, (apologies to all children and spectators who heard) from Coach Jamie Graham during a timeout in the 3rd qtr and a cohesive decision from the team to not go down without a fight sparked a much needed boost of energy and intensity as they ended the 3rd qtr trailing by 12pts, 59 - 47.
The intensity did not drop in the 4th as the boys rallied themselves back in the game and with the shot clock winding down with less than 2mins to go, Captain Mike Kinley (16pts) splashed a big 3 which gave the boys a 2pt lead. A moment later Joel Stratford (19pts) hit another 3pt shot giving the boys a 5pt lead, a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to win 73 -65, outscoring Atami 26 - 6 in the last qtr.
Veterans Lionel Hopgood (15pts) and Dean Le Warne (8pts) came up big down the stretch as they took care of all and any rebounds that came their way. Other notable mention goes to Oli Davies (9pts) and James Levings who sparked the comeback with their tenacious defence.
Another great team effort by everyone including the bench who yelled and cheered from the sidelines helping to keep the energy at an all time high.

Checkers got on top of Gators 74-61

Checkers raced away to grab an handy 21-9 against a lack-lustre Gators despite the appearance of Jeremy Kench for Gators with Ethan Rusbatch penetrating strongly through the Gators defence. The pace of the game slowed in the second quarter as Gators re-grouped, reducing the margin to trail 24-33 at half-time. Pip Johnston and Ben Van Oosten led another strong challenge in the third quarter while tight defensive work restricted the usually free-scoring Jordan Duggan and the usual nimble Chris Duthie was shut down. Nat Connell directed operations for Checkers while concentrating on setting up his team-mates rather than score himself. Kaye McKee led Gators efforts in the middle stages but Checkers extended its lead to 54-39 by the third break. In the evenly matched last quarter Checkers capitalised from the free-throw line as Gators tried in vain to turn the game around while Rusbatch was sighted to be limping a little.

University of Canterbury masters Lincoln 90-71

Boosted by a mid-week encounter against the touring Athletes in Action, an American side,  UC outplayed Lincoln University with a solid team effort, especially on defence against an abysmal Lincoln. Key linkman Nick Erwood and James Cawthorn where sitting out injured, leaving to a huge workload to Aled Jones and Joseph King for Lincoln. Zacc Dwan made good use of his extra court time, slotting 12 and grabbing eight rebounds. Isaac Williams also stepped up for Lincoln but University where on fire through the efforts of Brent Fisher (25 pts and 10 rebounds) and Sam Crozier 18 points. New recruit this season ex cashmere High, Harley Campbell added a valuable 10 points. University sneaked ahead 21-17 by quarter-time but pressed ahead 54-34 by the turn around. Lincoln lifted its efforts in the third-quarter to trail 68-57 but their last-quarter challenge went flat as Crozier and Fisher broke the trap to take University to a well-earned victory. King produced some good baskets supported by Stu Erskine late in the game to keep Lincoln’s score turning over.

Women’s Premier Championship

Patron’s trophy winner Halswell raced away to a comfortable 74-41 win over Pioneer to regain outright lead in the Women’s Premier championship while the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 & 2012 defending champion University continued its re-build with a solid 66-50 defeat of a short-manned Minties. Lincoln University enhanced its chances of a fourth placing with a solid 63-39 thumping of Gators.

Premier basketball takes a break this Saturday while players are the Under 23 Nationals in Tauranga.

Pioneer can still make the play-offs but will mean beating Gators on the 31st August and Lincoln losing to Minties, and then turning the tables on Lincoln in the final round on September 7th by two points or more.

The Semi-Finals are scheduled for September 14 with Grand Final day on Saturday September 21st.

University downs Minties 66-50

Minties started strongly against University, heading to a 20-12 lead by quarter-time through the efforts of Olivia Bensley and Sia Ah Tong but in the next period Junior Representative Laken Wairau and former Nelson rep Jaime Campbell piled on the pressure and points flowed as the students advanced to a 38-30 half-time lead. Canterbury Wildcat Hayley Gray endeavoured to break the University defence with some pressure baskets in the third quarter, but restricted to just six players, Minties tired against the rotating students. Canterbury Wildcat Rosanna Katene with support from Charlotte Elley produced some good baskets for University as they pulled clear.

Halswell defeats Gators 74-41

Canterbury Wildcat and Italian player Cecillia Zambrini has got Halswell finally tuned and with commanding ball from Wildcat and Butler Bulldog Lori McDaniel and old hand Anna Williams soon had its game in control, leading 24-13 by quarter-time. Pioneer lifted its efforts in the second quarter, matching Halswell point for point through the efforts of developing player Tessa Boagni and new-comer Maia Hart. After leading 35-22 at half-time, Halswell applied further pressure easing steadily away with Rebecca Falloon contributing a valuable 15 points with support close in from Williams.

Lincoln University 63 Pioneer 39

The Wildcats’ captain Shea Crotty led Lincoln by example, setting up the moves and running the break while Bridgette Lawn and Hannah Turton got inside the Gators’ defences. Beth Wyatt had one of her best games for Gators slotting 17 points with a consistent display. After leading 23-21 at the break, Lincoln piled on the pressure and the baskets followed in the third-quarter outpointing Pioneer 27-7 with Lawn compiling most of her 14 in this period and Turton adding 15 from strong inside and outside moves. Kate McLaughlin and Bailey McDougall added to Pioneer’s woes in the final quarter for Lincoln, the energetic Rachel Harrison continuing to marshal the Gators moves with support from Kimberley Heron.

Scorers were:

University 66 (Laken Wairau 16, Charlotte Elley 11, Rosanna Katene 11, Jaime Campbell 11) Minties 50 (Sia Ah Tong 15, Hayley Gray 12, Libby Bensley 12). HT: 38-30. Lincoln University 63 (Hannah Turton 15, Bridgette Lawn 14, Shea Crotty 14) Gators 39 (Beth Wyatt 17). HT: 23-21. Halswell 74 (Rebecca Falloon 15, Natasha Van Vuuren 12, Anna Williams 11, Cecillia Zambrini 11) Pioneer 41 (Tessa Boagni 12). HT: 35-22.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

The top four of the Men’s Under 23 competition took an interesting turn on Saturday with Wolverines upsetting the unbeaten Gators 72-56 while Atami, which has had some poor efforts in the Top four recently, blitzed a depleted Lincoln University 74-48 to avenge for the two earlier defeats this season.

In the Bottom five, the defending champion Checkers comfortably beat North Canterbury and University, on a high after a grand game against Athletes in Action mid-week, accounted for Royals in a strong game 93-73 leaving the Elimination play-offs on August 31st being a repeat of the weekends encounter. This will find which two teams are to match up against the third and fourth placed teams from the Top four in a Quarter-final on September 7th.

Meanwhile Premier and U23 basketball takes a break this Saturday while players are at the Under 23 Nationals in Tauranga.

A very proud Master coach Jamie Graham added his report

The U23's got off to a great start against the undefeated Gators leading 17 - 14 after the first qtr and extended the lead in the 2nd to go into half time up 7 at 34 - 27.
The 3rd qtr belonged to captain Oli Davies (22pts, 16reb, 6 steals and 5 asst) and Shou 'always showtime' Nisbet (24pts) who scored all bar 3 of the 3rd qtr points. Shou, one of, if not the youngest player in the U23 competition, dominated his more senior opposition as he sliced his way through the Gator’s defence.
The defensive intensity was at an all-time high in the 4th as they shut down Gators allowing them only 8pts as the Wolves pulled away winning 72 - 56.
James Levings (10pts, 4 steals) did a great job of defending danger man Chris Duthie (18pts).
It was a huge team effort by all and the best the team has played all season.

Dan the Man Chan sends his report on Saturday morning’s action in Cowles stadium.

CBA U23 Mens’ Reports – Round 14

Wolverines v Gators (72 – 56)

An outstanding performance by the young Year 11 Shou ‘Shoutime’ Nisbet (24 points) capped off a great team effort by the peaking Wolverines side as they caused an upset against previously unbeaten Gators, 72 – 56. The youthful Wolves side ran off to a 17 – 14 first quarter lead, and then piled on the pressure in the second quarter to lead by 7 points at halftime, 34 – 27. Nisbet and Wolves captain Oli Davies (22 points, 16 reb, 6 steals, 5 assists) owned the third quarter as they combined to score all but 3 points for Wolverines during the period. In the last quarter, the Wolfpack stepped up the defensive effort only allowing Gators to notch up a measly 8 points. Wolves combo guard James Levings (10 points) did a great job of defending Gators and Canterbury U23 point guard Chris Duthie (18 points. Even though Gators were missing lefty swingman Jozef Knottenbelt, it will be a big wake-up call as the Top 4 teams enter the final stretch of the season.

Atami v Lincoln University (74 – 48)

Atami cruised to a 74 – 48 victory over an up and down Lincoln University team. Atami showed what they can achieve with a full roster, after weeks of playing with limited numbers due to injuries. The Atami lads ran out to a 30 – 16 start after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead, winning every ensuing quarter. The Atami ‘guard three’ again did most of the damage with Cam Chalmers (21 points), Bryn McLennan (14 points) and Alex Dobbs (10 points) scoring at will. Kyle Tikao, who many have said has been a steal of a free agent signing, continued his fine form with 15 points, and Lucas Hill ripped down a monster 23 rebounds. For Lincoln, only two players reached double figures – 2012 U19 National champion Joseph King (13 points) and former NBL guard Aled Jones (11 points). Isaac Williams had an impressive 17 rebounds in just over two quarters of play.

Checkers v North Canterbury (75 – 46)

Defending champions Checkers breezed past North Canterbury, 75 – 46 as they displayed their D’Antoni-like ‘7 seconds or less’ basketball game to full effect. Checkers nailed 11 three pointers in the game, with shooting guard Jake Naylor (12 points) hitting 4 of them, including 3 back-to-back-to-back in the first to give his team an early lead. Under-the-radar free agent signing, Elliot Noble, top scored for Checkers with 16 points, while Tyson Silberry and Mitch Eder both had 13 and 12 points respectively. For North Canterbury, only Scott Edwards (12 points) and Ben Buckendahl (11 points) could notch double digits. The next round will feature these two teams squaring off again in a knockout match to determine who will make the Top 6.

Varsity v Royals (93 – 73)

Varsity cantered to a 20-point win over the scrappy Royals unit, 93 – 73. The first quarter was a tight affair, with the students only leading by 5 at the end of it. However, the boys in maroon suffocated the Royals team to only 10 points in the second quarter, whilst running away for 31 of their own. Royals’ struggled to defend the inside-out, one-two punch of pure shooter Harley Campbell (22 points, 4/6 3PT) and dominant centre Ollie Crawford (33 points, 15/22 FG). Varsity captain Rowan Feeney added 11 points alongside former U20 Finals MVP Ed Burry (11 points). To Royals’ credit, they kept the third quarter close, only losing by 2 points and won the fourth quarter by 6 points, thanks to energetic swingman Simon Hodgson (23 points, 10 rebs, 10/20 FG), Josh Burke (12 points), Jade Penn (11 points) and  Nathan Hight (10 points).

Scorers were:

Top four:

Wolverines 72 (Shou Nisbett 24, Oli Davies 22, James Levings 10) Gators 56 (Chris Duthie 18) Atami 74 (Cam Chalmers 21, 8R, Bryn McLennan 14, Alex Dobbs 10) Lincoln University 48 (Joseph King 13, Aled Jones 11, 7R).

Bottom five: Checkers 75 (Aidan Ryan 12) North Canterbury 46 (Scott Edwards 12, Ben Buckendahl 11), University 93 (Ollie Crawford 33, Harley Campbell 22, Ed Burry 11) Royals 73 (Simon Hodgson 22, Josh Burke 14, Jade Penn 11, Nathan Wright 10).  Bye: Pioneer.

Men’s Under 20

A finely tuned Middleton Grange Gators is one of the few, Burnside White U17’s in another, unbeaten teams remaining in this seasons competition, sitting majestically placed on 28 points after another comfortable win.

The defending champion Burnside was joined by Boys High and North Canterbury in sharing second place after Cashmere brought off a stunning 81-73 victory over Burnside, Boys’ High had a comfortable 71-43 over an injury-hit Lincoln and North Canterbury chalked up a ‘tonne’ against Pioneer.

Wolverines slipped into the danger zone in the lower section of the Top eight, well beaten by the fast rising St Andrews College team 75-59 but it will take a miracle for Rangiora High to break back into the top eight even though it beat Aranui Academy 78-56 on Saturday as Wolverines have an easier game against cellar-dwellar Christ’s College in the final round robin game this Saturday. Rangiora would have to beat the highly motivated Cashmere side to have a chance of breaking back.

Key match ups in the final round robin games in the U20 grade this Saturday sees Burnside up against Boys’ High, Cashmere takes on Rangiora and the high flying St Andrews comes up against the might of North Canterbury.

Quarter-final action sees top No 1 seed (MGG) up against the 8th placed qualifier while 2nd placed team plays No 7, 4 v 5, and 3rd meets 6th all one August 31st before another rest day on September 7th. The bottom eight teams will play-off for placings 9-16th. Semi-finals will follow on September 14th.

Cashmere rises to beat Burnside 81-73

Development coach Ben Sheat sent in his report

In one of the more high intensity games of the season we managed to come out on top. It was an up and down game where both sides hit plenty of shots but couldn't stop each other defensively in transition and in the half court. With the game tied for a good period in the 4th quarter we managed to find that next gear and come out with the win which was good. Our Trans D was poor, execution poor and our turnover count was high but we started to find some all right intensity and showed some signs of it all coming together keeping our composure in the 4th to grind out the win.

Joe said before the game that his boys had risen the intensity at practice higher than he had seen before and seemed comfortable to taking on Cashmere.

Roving reporter Bruce Martin continues the story

Kyle Tikao quckly found range for Cashmere while Gai Gainlorenzo got inside the Burnside defence to pick up some quality baskets. After trailing 16-27 Burnside mounted a strong recovery through the efforts of the nimble Jahnim Campbell and Kyle Louis whereas the energetic Shou Nisbett had left his energy in the Wolverines U23 earlier in the morning. By half-time Burnside still trailed 40-46 but kept coming back to lie one behind 62-63 by the third break.

Tikao continued to grab handy rebound ball and along with the towering George Love sneared much needed possession to thwart the Burnside recovery and several late baskets from Love sealed the inevitable Cashmere victory.

Burnside coach Joe Hammond sent in this late report.

A good preparation game leading up to quarter finals for us. Cashmere were solid and I thought they played well on both ends. Kyle Tikao was a major problem for us and was the difference maker. We lost but learnt some valuable lessons. Couple adjustments and we're good to go.

Boys High moves into top gear beating Lincoln 71-43

Boys High challenge got underway with a solid team effort, five different players finding the hoop in the first quarter as Boys High sneaked ahead 14-13. In the absence of the injured James Cawthorn, Lincoln looked to support through the efforts of Sam Riley and Stu Erskine. Nathan Campbell applied pressure for Boys High, eventually totalling 32 points as Boys High sneaked ahead 32-27 by half-time and raced away in the third quarter with a 22-9 run to take a 54-36 lead. Erskine tried to pick up the pace to regain momentum for Lincoln to no avail and Boys High continued to pull away.

St Andrews continues its great form, accounting for Wolverines 75-59

Wolverines started strongly enough with a better team effort with Hayden Murphy leading the charge, putting Wolverines ahead 14-10 by the first break.

A vigorous display by Jayden Chan set up a strong reply from St Andrews and with Nick Symon taking control of the boards, St Andrews went back in front 33-27 by half-time.

Stac’s recently found improved form has transformed this side and with Ben Cushing and Zak De Roo adding to the busy efforts of Chan then St Andrews drew away steadily outpointing Wolverines 21-14 in the third-quarter to lead 54-41. Symon got back into top gear in the final quarter Murphy tried in vain to keep Wolverines in the hunt.

North Canterbury thumps Pioneer 114-59

Contribution supplied by Liam Connelly

The North Canterbury under 20 basketball boys had a dominating performance against a young Pioneer side, grabbing a commanding victory 114-59. Liam Connelly got his shot going early, which helped the North boys get off to an early double-digit first- quarter lead. Through the middle of the game the offensive focus shifted to dominant big man Lawson Morris Whyte who did not disappoint, putting in work on his way to a massive 47 point total including a couple of thunderous dunks. Connelly once again came alight in the fourth-quarter to make sure this contest would not be close, on his way to 31 points including six 3-pointers. Key players Jordan De Winter and Dan Mills worked hard throughout the game to produce 15 and 12 point totals respectively.

Karesse Lavery was the mainstay for Pioneer with a hard-earned 15 points.

Rangiora defeats Aranui Academy 78-58

Contribution supplied by Liam Connelly

Rangiora High School went up against lowly placed Aranui Academy, which saw the high school boys walk away with the win. Star point guard Riley Block pushed the fast break early for Rangiora, either contributing to his own 21 point total, or dishing off dimes to his teammates such as 14 year old Barclay Miller. To go with his own driving play, Miller managed to finish with a respectable 14 points, including a debut slam dunk, which demonstrated signs of big things in years to come. As the game progressed Aranui managed to get some fast break points of their own through the play of Hayden Lee (18) and Jarvis Ataera (14). However their efforts would not be enough, as Rangiora’s interior size in Miller, Will Morris-Whyte, returned from injury and Max Lines was just too great, Rangiora powering to the finish with a 78-58 victory.

Ricky McDonald was another Aranui to show some improved form with 12 points.

Middleton Grange accounts for Papanui comfortably 94-43

A strong early team effort saw the unbeaten Middleton Gators chalk up a heavy 33-6 first-quarter lead with Zach Lilburne (2 three’s) and Ash Adamson (4 threes) standing out. Ten different Gators players got into good scoring positions leaving Papanui struggling as Gators moved to a 55-18 half-time lead.

Adamson dot inside to stretch the Papanui defence even further bring his game tally to 20 points while Gators restricted the usually free-scoring Taylor Britt to a mere 17 points.

St Bedes College 81 Christs College 55

Michael Newton and Lachlan Stark led a good strong challenge by Christ’s College against the arch-rivals St Bedes. Reid Gibbons and Cole Wilson replied for Bedes as they edged ahead 17-15 by the first break. Jaiden Manera added to St Bedes efforts with some handy skills as St Bedes began to get on top. Ben Hood and Gibbens continued strong efforts as St Bedes built on its 36-25 half-time lead to stretch out to a more comfortable 60-42 third-quarter margin. Andy Yeomans added several good baskets for Christs College in the final period but St Bedes had the greater depth.

Boy’s Under 17

Another area of focus this coming weekend will be the development U17 grade where defending champion Burnside (White) looks on target to do a repeat in 2013. Closest contender to take away that honour all season has been Middleton Grange Green.

In the first round encounter this season Burnside prevailed by a good margin 86-63.

The two teams are unbeaten in the Top six round and will clash again this Saturday to earn bragging rights going into semi-finals on September 14 after a two week lay-off.

In the last two seasons Middleton Green has been upset by Wolverines in the Semi’s after strong showings throughout the 2011 and 2012 seasons and will be seeking to break the cycle this year. Standing in its way looks likely to be a quietly determined Shirley Boys High which has been slowly and quietly developing into a strong formidable unit. The winner of the Burnside/Middleton Green clash gets to play fourth place qualifier which will be the winner of Saturdays encounter between

Stac and Boys High as Shirley have already sewn up third placing.

Burnside White comes back strong to beat Shirley Pacers 76-60

Shirley Pacers showed its class as it raced away to a stunned Burnside White, leading 30-18 through the efforts of Will Grocott and Jake Simpson while Kazuki Tsukiji and Kyle Louis responded to get the Burnside team back up and rolling. Blake Alps help lift Burnside into top gear while Oliver Fairbrother got inside the Shirley defences to grab much needed possession.

Middleton Grange Green 82 Christchurch Boys HS 71

Strong early combinations gave Boys High an early advantage over Middleton Green, sneaking to a 14-11 first-quarter lead with Tullan McGuiness and Quinn Clinton dominating play for Boys High. Sam Riley led the Middleton comeback in the second quarter with strong support from Zach Faigan putting the Green machine ahead 32-28 at the turn around. Sam Lees added to the pressure in the second half for Middleton compiling a well constructured 20 points but strong teamwork and defence from Boys High kept the score close.

St Andrews defeats Burnside Green 64-44

A busy Jayden Chan slotted a valuable 22 points giving Stac a strong 37-18 lead at the halfway mark against Burnside Green. Lewis Baker-McMillen showed advanced skills as he slotted an explicit 30 points to keep Burnside efforts in shape while Keith Dela Providencia and Isaac Gilpin added some handy baskets.

In the Bottom grouping of the U17 grade Cashmere Gold edged out Papanui’s development team in a busy encounter 70-68 after the lead had changed several times. Papanui was ahead 37-33 at the half time break, still ahead 56-52 by three-quarter interval but the sharp-shooting Jesse Campbell brought cashmere home in the closing moments with a well compiled 30 points.

St Bedes stopped the Lincoln fill in team 64-55  with a strong third-quarter but Lincoln ran out of time coming back in the last stand.

Middleton White scored a rare win, beating Christs College 65-31 through the efforts of Zachary Walker and  Lewis Seo.

Mid-week Men

The defending champion University, another former champion Checkers White and Burnham are tied on seven points at the top of the table leaving the match between The Bishops and another former champion Raiders swinging to see which teams grabs the fourth place qualifying spot on when they meet on August 28th.

University despatches Checkers White 67-54

Arch Mid-week rivals University and Checkers White fronted up with University forced to look for the outside shot against some tight Checkers defence. University still without its ‘Go to’ man David Baird on his way home from the World masters in Italy, University plundered the boards through the efforts of James Grant, Wayne Eddington, Gareth Cook and Jason Rivett. Rivett marshalled the former students moves with his usual authority while watching closely every Checkers moves.

Checkers slowed the game down to its own pace with Sam McNeill rounding off some precision moves while John Salkeld added to the scoring line. After trailing 26-34 at the half-way mark Nigel Buchanan found range within the keyhole to reduce the margin then looked to sharp shooters McNeil and Terry Brunel to make up lost ground but only one landed from behind the arch. Checkers were forced to foul to get possession back in the closing stages but the wirily University held its cool escaping to a 67-54 victory.

Burnham edge The Bishops 57-54

Burnham had to repulse several strong attempted comebacks from a make-shift The Bishops side before scrapping home 57-54. Craig Wilson slotted four triple pointers to enable The Bishops to keep in touch with the fast breaking Burnham side. An elusive Jack McDougall shot some uncanny baskets to nudge The Bishops even closer but Burnham rode out the challenge through the efforts of Vince Lawford and Nick Collinson while Brad Fraser marshalled the teams’ efforts.

Raiders demolished Bandits 77-32.

Derek Watson is determined that his Raiders will make the Top four play-offs with a gritty run against the promising Bandits whose efforts had slipped quite noticeably in recent weeks. Matt Havill got back on the scoreboard for Raiders with 16 points as did Watson and Julian Thompson while Shannon Buckingham led the Bandits reply.
