Men’s Premier Championship

Atami maintained the lead in the Men’s Premier club basketball championship, pulling away with a confident 72-55 win over Lincoln University in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Canterbury University needed a strong showing to keep it in the hunt for play-off contention, and, after trailing Gators 29-36, came back with a blistering finish only to run out of time to narrowly lose 63-66. Mike Karena, a former Nelson player, gave his Wolverines side a farewell cameo, slotting 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Wolverines demolished a lack-lustre double defending champion Checkers 83 points to 64.

Atami plays it cool beating Lincoln 72-55

Lincoln started its challenge against long-term champion Atami with great confidence, leading 15-6 very early but Atami coasted back to trail 21-22 by the first break. Lincoln again challenged strongly in the next quarter, opening out to a 29-23 lead through the efforts of the visiting Zacc Dwan, Manuel Nunez and Vinnie George while Atami watched closely every move of whizz kid Nick Erwood.

Sam Dobbs and Paul McFarlin set up a much stronger response from Atami, leading to many fast-breaking moves as the Lincoln’s shot began to miss under tighter Atami defence in the third quarter.

Nathan Hyde put fear into the Lincoln’s defence as he charged away on the end of one fast break, the big man gliding in a well-judged lay up while team leader Ritchie Howell added to Atami’s cause with many second chance baskets. Although the lead changed hands nine times Atami’s experience showed as it upped the tempo at will.

Wolverines powers away from Checkers 83-64

Checkers coach Kenny Perkins will welcome back key player Ethan Rusbatch from NBL duties (Taranaki Mountain Airs)with open arms this Saturday while also seeking out Nat Connell who was unavailable on Saturday. The Wolverines ran the ball quickly from all around the court as it raced to a 25-13 lead with early efforts from Mike Kinley and Lionel Hopgood while Checkers Pip Johnston with 12 defencive rebounds along with Ben Teale did their best to stall the Wolverines attack. Joel Stratford continued to show improved confidence after injury with a solid 18 points and nine rebounds, many in the second quarter while Karena began to assurt his authority around the boards, using his height and strength to dominate.

Wolverines grabbed 49-3 points off the bench and 23-12 second chance points as its dominance of Checkers continued. Checkers however did manage 17-9 points off turnovers.

Sir Jamie Graham added his comments

In Mike Karena's last game for the Men's Premier team, the boys wanted to make sure it was a memorable one as he heads back to Texas to play college ball.
The boys didn't disappoint as they raced out to a 25 - 13 qtr time lead with Mike Kinley scoring 8 of his 14pts in the first quarter.
Joel Stratford had his best offensive game since coming back from injury as he scored 18pts, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
Mike Karena made sure his last game was a good one as he top scored with 25pts and threw down a spectacular put back dunk as the pack cruised to a 83 - 64 victory.
The boys would like to wish Mike Karena all the best as he embarks on his next journey.

Gators defends off strong University challenge 66-63

Long term Varsity mentor Piet Van Haselt had his University primed ready to challenge title contenders Gators and came up with a solid determination. While Chris Duthie blazed away for Gators with several three pointers University got inside the Gators defence through the efforts off Marty Davison, Matt Campbell, Brent Fisher and Ollie Crawford. After the match was level 19-19 at the first break, Jozef Knottenbelt picked up the workload for Gators in the second-quarter to help Gators take a 36-29 lead by the turnaround. The Grand Master Blaze Dowall showed he still had many skills to offer as he blocked shot after shot to deny University as the students came back with a strong fourth quarter challenge, helped by twooutside shots from Harley Campbell still finding confidence after an injury break. University was down 47-57 at the last break but ran out of time as they continued to close the gap to lose by three.

Men’s Division One

Wolverines, double defending champion PlaceMakers Wolves and Atami share the lead with one loss apiece while University slips into fourth spot with two losses. With one round remaining this Sunday North Canterbury have finished with 15 points and have a bye this week and a non-competition game against Royals U23 side while the remaining top six berth will depend on the result of this Sunday’s Checkers/HSOB clash. Old Boys should have too much experience for Checkers who need to do almost the impossible and defeat HSOB by seven points or more. Should Checkers upset the three teams will be closely tied on 15 points but Checkers job will be much harder as it won’t have the services of its leader Bob Weatherford.

North Canterbury 85 Pioneer Blue 65

North Canterbury almost secured a place in the top six of the tough Men’s Division one grade when it divides after the holiday break with a comfortable 85-65 win over cellar-dwellars Pioneer Blue. Corey Crampton compiled a hard-working 25 points with strong back-up efforts from Troy Halliday (19) and Reilly Price with 19 points. Ollie Dawe (17), Abdulah Naasar (12) and Sallem Richards with 12 points where the force behind the Pioneer Blue challenge.

Atami 81 Checkers 65

CBA board member Jeremy Phillips stepped up for Atami to repulse a strong challenge from a determined Checkers side to pull away to a 81-65 win while Marc Ritchie (16) and Alex Kerr with 14 points led the Checekers reply.

Wolverines MD1  74 Checkers MU23  71

Hot shot Jamie Graham sent in his report

The Div 1 boys had to come back from 10 points down early in the 4th qtr to beat the Checkers U23 team 74 - 71 in a battle against experience vs youth.

Carl Willocks (14pts) playing with a huge hangover in true wolfpack style shot well from the outside and Nick Purcell (14pts) was huge inside the paint. Jamie Graham (11pts) nailed three 3pters to help in the comeback. Editor comment: Modest young Man

Men’s Under 23 Championship

The grade has just divided into a Top four with Wolverines, Gators, Atami and

Lincoln University playing a double round robin where competition is really intense while the defending champion Checkers comes up against University, North Canterbury, Royals and Pioneer in a single round robin before four of them play-off in two elimination games to see which two sides join the top four in a quarter-final showdown on 7th September. Watch this space gents. Grand Final day is Saturday 21st September.

Dan Chan sends his report on Saturday morning’s action in Cowles stadium. Look for the double OT thriller.

CBA U23 Mens’ Reports – Round 10

Varsity v North Canterbury (88 – 57)

Varsity eased to a comfortable 31-point victory over an undermanned North Canterbury side, 88 - 57. After escaping with an 8-point win earlier in the season against NC, the Varsity boys were out to prove a point but it was in fact NC who started out strongly, winning the first quarter 19 – 17. However, it was all one-way traffic afterwards – strong defensive pressure from 2011 and 2012 U19 Canterbury reps Matt Campbell (17 points) and Karl Magon (13 points) led to some easy transition buckets for the students. Once again, the depth of the Varsity squad showed, with five players hitting double figures – in addition to Campbell and Magon, Ollie Crawford (18 points, 11 reb), Jordyn Kauta (13 points, 9 reb) and Rowan Feeney (10 points) all contributed strongly. For North Canterbury, representative guard Liam Connelly put up a strong fight with 23 points and 5 steals.

Gators v Lincoln University (100 – 90, 2OT)

The game of the round saw Gators prevail with a 100 – 90 win in a thrilling 2OT match. Gators led for most of the match, until a 12-point comeback in the fourth quarter saw Lincoln fight back to force OT after a tense final few minutes of regulation where Gators were unable to capitalize on some free throw attempts. Through OT, Lincoln couldn’t keep up with the pace of the game and succumbed after two periods of extra time. Lincoln’s superstar free agent acquisition Zacc Dwan proved why he was a NZ U20 rep, dropping a double-double – 33 points and 14 boards, while Lincoln’s Nick Erwood (26 points, 12 rebs, 11/14 FTs) and Aled Jones (13 points, 8 reb, 7 assists) both played an epic 49 minutes each. For Gators, swingman Kaye McKee was the pick of the bunch with an outstanding 21 points and 20 rebound game, on 8/14 FG. Point guard Chris Duthie was solid with 19 points, as was shooter Jordan Duggan (17 points, 4 3PTs), lefty Tom Mulvihill (15 points, 5/7 FG) and jack-of-all trades Jozef Knottenbelt (11 points). Power forward Alex Jellie almost had a double-double with 9 points and 11 boards.

Royals v Pioneer (72 – 60)

Royals came out on top in a rival clash between the arch-enemy Pioneer, 72 – 60. Royals started off strong winning the first quarter, 22 – 10, with all but three points coming from Simon Hodgson and Josh Olds. Pioneer coach Marty Davison was unable to rally the troops until the fourth quarter, where Pioneer won 25 – 15, but it was too little, too late. Royals’ captain, Hodgson continued his Monta Ellis-like numbers with 30 points, with contributions from Josh Olds (22 points) and Josh Burke (11). Pioneer’s Tyla Harrison-Hunt notched 17 points with help from Jimmy Davis (11 points) and Mikey Graham (10 points).

Wolverines v Atami (70 – 58)

Wolverines began their Top 4 round robin strongly, with a solid win over Atami, 70 – 58. Earlier in the week, Atami signed free agent centre George Love to fill a gaping need for depth at the centre position and he was able to contribute immediately with 13 points. He was joined by the usual contributors Bryn McLennan (11 points) and Cam “Twinkle Toes” Chalmers (22 points) but it wasn’t enough as the clinical Wolves eased to victory, despite Atami winning the final quarter by 10. Wolverines’ captain Oli Davies (15 points) top scored for the ‘pack’, with centre Michael Karena (13 points) and guard James Levings (11 points) also notching double digits.

Master coach Jamie Graham sent in his view of the game

The U23's got off to a hot start against Atami as they raced out to an early 10 point lead with Oli Davies (15pts) and James Levings (11pts) leading the way.
By the half they had a handy 13 point lead 42 - 29. Will Lovell back from injury was a monster on the offensive glass going after everything he could get his hands on.
The boys lifted their defensive intensity in the 3rd only allowing Atami to score 9pts in the quarter and went into the 4th up 60 - 38.

Scorers were:

Top four: Gators 100 (Kaye McKee 21, 20R, Chris Duthie 19, Thomas Mulvihill 19, Jordan Duggan 17, Jozef Knottenbelt 11, 5R) Lincoln University 90 (Zacc Dwan 33, 14R 6A, Nick Erwood 26, 12R, Aled Jones 13, 8R,7A, Vincent George 10) in Double overtime, Ft: 78-78, 1st OT: 85-85. Wolverines 70 (Oli Davies 15, Michael Karena 13, James Levings 11) Atami 58 (Cam Chalmers 22, George Love 13, Bryn McLennan 11). Bottom five: Royals 72 (Simon Hodgson 30, Josh Olds 22, Josh Burke 11) Pioneer 60 (Tyla Hunt 17, James Davis 11, Michael Graham 10), University 88 (Ollie Crawford 18, Matt Campbell 17, Karl Magon 13, Jordyn Kauta 13) North Canterbury 57 (Liam Connelly 23, Angus Forbes 11). Bye: Checkers.

Men’s Under 20

Seven teams have cemented places in the Top eight with Middleton Grange Gators the only unbeaten side to date. The defending champion Burnside showed it is determined to repeat last years’ efforts showing good signs of a recovery after a setback several weeks back are one point back while hovering in third place are Boys High and Wolverines. North Canterbury shares 5th pace with Wolverines and Lincoln College (three losses apiece) on 17 points while Rangiora, beaten by St Bedes on Saturday, shares the 8th spot with three other sides including St Bedes, St Andrews and Gators (the club side) with just five more rounds remaining.

The 8th placed qualifier will have its work cut out as it will likely have to face the unbeaten MGG in the Quarter-finals planned for Saturday August 31st.

Burnside eventually takes control over Wolverines 83-67

Developing Coach Nick Purcell sent in his report

Wolverines U20 looked to bounce back from last week’s loss but had their work cut out for them against the defending champions Burnside. Wolverines played with a lot more intensity than the previous week and control of the game see-sawed back and forth. Captain Jacob Fairhall led the team with 19 points along with a strong performance from reliable big man Hayden Murphy (14 points) and the welcome return of Sam Chadwick (10 Points) from an ankle injury. Wolverines held a 1 point lead 37-36 at the half but Burnside rallied back and headed into the final quarter up 5 points 56-51. Burnside's dynamic duo of Jahnim Campbell (22 points) and Shou Nisbet (25 points) took control of the game combining for 18 4th quarter points.

Bruce takes up the story. Burnside’s Jahnim Campbell drove through early slack Wolverines defence showing advance athletic skills, grabbing heaps of rebounds and putting back a number of tough baskets while Shou Nisbet set the moves with some strong penetration and uncanny timing of his outlet passes. Jacob Fairhall led the Wolverines challenge by example, setting the moves while also controlling the defence. Hayden Murphy (14) and  Sam Chadwick added to Wolverines strengths as they continued to keep Wolverines intouch with Gators. They closed the gap back under much pressure and took a narrow 37-36 lead at the half-time beak. Master strategist coach Joe Hammond had his Burnside players finely tuned and responded to his call to edge slightly ahead putting much pressure on the Wolverines play-makers, forcing the Wolverines shots to miss their mark and the game then slipped away.

Middleton Grange almost took it too coolly, pipping STAC in catch-up game 62-61

Last Thursday Middleton Grange came out all guns blazing in a catch-up game against St Andrews College, racing away to a 22-5 lead and brought on their bench too early. Stac came back through the increased efforts of Nick Symon while Zak De Roo marshaled the St Andrews challenge with precision, closing the gap to 22-29 by the turnaround.

Honours were pretty even in the third quarter with Middleton holding to a 46 -38 lead but Stac where not finished yet and outscored the Gators 23-16 with a final burst from Jayden Chan and more big putbacks from Symon. The Gators hit two very tough shots to score the final five points of the game. Ash Adamson and George Klomp where the only Middleton players to reach double figures.

Middleton Grange Gators outruns Aranui 79-49

Zach Lilburne and Jonny Suddens got the green machine back up and running after nearly dropping its first game on Thursday, racing away to a 27-12 against a plodding Aranui Academy. The bench played its part as the game progressed but Jarvis Ataera was able to penetrate a little for Aranui through slackening Gators defence but by the turnaround Gators had pulled away to lead 49-29. Gators softened its defence even further in the third quarter but Aranui were slow to take advantage of it with only Ataera able to break through. National and CBA Under age representative Lilburne produced more good baskets as Gators extended its lead and remain unbeaten.

Lincoln subdues Stac 81-51.

St Andrews got off to a rocketing start against Lincoln which was missing the services of NZU16 rep Sam Riley who was at the OZ State champs. Ben Collerton got the St Andrews challenge under-way while the unmarked Jayden Chan splashed two three pointers from behind the arc to give his side a handy 14-7 lead by the first break. Once the formidable duo of James Cawthorn (35) and Stu Erskine (29) got their radar working Lincoln began to race ahead 27-22 by half-time and extended it to 54-41 by three –quarter time. Nick Symon rose to the challenge to keep Stac’s  points turning over in the third-period but Lincoln upped the anti in the last quarter to pull easily away to a comfortable win.

North Canterbury demolishes Shirley Boys High 98-50

The North Canterbury Men’s Under 20 basketball side cemented a place in the grades top eight with a re-sounding 98-50 demolition of Shirley Boys High in Cowles Stadium. Lawson Morris-Whyte was almost unstoppable as he splashed in an amazing 54 points from close range including a number of ramma-jammers above the heads of the smaller Shirley boys. Other steady efforts came from Liam Connelly in the second half after North Canterbury had lead 63-28 at the turnaround, Jordan De Winter a reliable 14 points and a strong defencive effort while Daniel Mills continued his hard work about the court.

Shirley relies heavy on a number of its developing players from the U17 team with Patrick Roger (15) and Connor Page to the fore while Will Grocott often excels.

St Bedes College outplays Rangiora High 61-53

Rangiora High slipped down the table in the Under 20 grade after it was defeated 61-53 by a more determined St Bedes College. St Bedes established an early 14-8 first quarter lead through the efforts of Connor McCrossin (20) and Reid Gibbens, extended it to 37-27 by half-time with Cole Wilson penetrating for St Bedes before Rangiora came alive in the third quarter through the efforts of Barclay Miller (16) and Will Morris-Whyte on 15 points. Lucas Campbell showed some enterprise later in the game but by then St Bedes had the game under control.

Cashmere High up and running against Pioneer

Cashmere were excused foir being a bit slow out of the blocks with its mentor Ben Sheat away with the NZU16 side in the land of Oz but his assistant coach Russell McCormick had some stirring to do and they came out firing after only taking a 11-7 first quarter lead. The man made mountain George Love hauled down many rebounds and glided in a number of delicate lay-ups as he raced to his 22 points. Meanwhile Joemer Altabano and Alex Irvine had to work hard to secure any lose ball as Cashmere edged ahead 26-17 by the turn around. Jakob Strong-Van Gestel and Sam Oldroyd added to Cashmere’s challenge as they extended the lead to 53-33 by the next break. As Cashmere relaxed its defence a little the William Brown and Nick Kwant were able to slip in some handy baskets.

Boys High was strongly challenged by Papanui, pulling clear in the last quarter 82-52

The Taylor Britt led Papanui High gave ChCh Boys High a good work out holding the more higher placed Boys High to 16-18 at the first break and only trailed 29-40 by half-time. After early baskets from Joshua Campbell and Scott Ralston the Nathan Campbell led Boys High increased the pressure with the tall Campbell using his power to drive the lanes to slot his best effort this season with 31 points. Papanui with Britt well marked and only slotting a quiet 23 points held doggedly on through the third-quarter but the flood gates opened in the final period with Campbell and Ralston slotting a succession of baskets.

Gators too strong for Christ’s College 89-42

Gators out manoeuvred the hard working Christs College 89-42 through the efforts of the tall Tarapi Neilson (34) with back up from Harry Smit and Cyrus Eade while Oliver Jones-Allen had to work twice as hard to earn his 14 points. Gators took a while to settle , only leading 14-9 but slotted key baskets with ease to see Gators stretch the lead to 42-19 by half-time. Mid-week Men

The defending champion University remained unbeaten despite the absence of sharp-shooting David Baird while team organiser Jason Rivett stepped up to supply 23 points as University beat arch-rivals The Bishops 67-46 who appeared to be missing regular scorer Jack McDougall. The Bishops also qualify for the Top six sharing 5th place with Raiders.

Burnham overwhelmed the Special Olympic team 107-61 to move into second place on the table as the grade now divides into a Top six, bottom six for another round robin over five weeks.

Raiders, also a former three times champion back in 2005-2007, secured a top six placing with a solid 79-34 win over Royals with Matt Havill again to the fore with 20 points.

Bandits took a share of third place with a solid 96-35 win over Pioneer through the efforts of Shannon Buckingham (30) and Nelson Santos on 25 points

Lincoln University opened strongly against new entrant The Sphinx but was strongly challenged in the second half before winning 74-65. Three times former Champion Checkers White where a bit slower out of the blocks without the services of Paul Isitt and Terry Brunel but where carried to a 69-59 win over the deaf club entry Goauld through the elusive efforts of Nigel Buchanan on 20 points. Ashley Bensley again showed sharp skills slotting 20 points in reply for Goauld.

Scorers were:

University 67 (Jason Rivett 23, Nick Gee 11, James Grant 10) The Bishops 46 (Simon Megget 16, Diederick Van Heyningen 11), Checkers White 69 (Nigel Buchanan 20, Brendon Cowles 12, Chris Chapman 11) Goauld 59 (Ashley Bensley 20, Alex Field 16, Matthew Flynn 12), Raiders 79 (Matt Havill 20, Julian Price 10, Steve Gainsford 10, Jason Ray 10) Royals 34 (Sam Sloane 11), Burnham 107 (Dayne Hunt-Irvine 30, Hugh Basabass 24, Vince Van Dorn 24, Takerei Searancke 20) Special Olympics 61 (Bradley Garner 21, Craig Bennett 12), Lincoln University 74 (Fabian Kulpe 21, Matty Risi 17, Rion Kelson 10) Sphinx 65 (James Taylor 24, Peng Hou 21), Bandits 96 (Shannon Buckingham 30, Nelson Santos 25, Rijjin Valiao 11) Pioneer 35 (Alex Kelliher 13).

Mid- Week Women Championship

Halswell Red had a comfortable win over sister side Halswell Green, winning 53-25 with Kirsty Jones stepping up in the absence of Gina Papahadjis while the veteran Jo Mumm showed she still had the skills to show learnt from her Wildcat days. A lack-lustre CYA was strongly challenged by an improving Checkers side, sneaking home 37-29 in a low scoring encounter and the Hi-Rollers thumped Pioneer 62 -29 with Aria Café and Mary Jane Jones leading the Hi-Rollers efforts.

The game off the night saw the matriarch of the Royals club, Cathy Hyland, play a double trump with the Beukenholdt sisters (Adrianna Fenemore and Tina Cronshaw) stepping out of retirement to boost the flagging efforts and carry Royals to a much needed 65-34 win over University, the final margin not reflecting the closeness of the encounter as both sides gave it all they had. Both wore glasses but Aidy soon discarded hers when they went flying, shooting four baskets from her favoured spot outside the key while Tina also lost hers but re-gathered them to slot 10 points for Royals while the veteran Denise Ryan could hardly missed, collecting 20.

Scorers were:

Halswell Red 53 (Kirsty Jones 14, Jo Mumm 14) Halswell Green 25 (Karen Radovonich 6), CYA 37 (Briar Woodhead 8) Checkers 29 (Chrissy Willetts 9), Royals 65 (Denise Ryan 20, Sally Couper 12, Tina Cronshaw 10) University 34 (Chrissy Bell 11, Kate Dore 10), Hi-Rollers 62 (Aria Café 18, Mary Jane Jones 17, Olly Nicholas 11) Pioneer 29 (Julia Thomson 12).
