Megan Gilmore has been named Sport Canterbury’s Gary Cockram Hyundai Coach of the Month for June 2013.

Gilmore is responsible for the successful Year 1-8 basketball programme at Kaiapoi North School in North Canterbury, which has run for the past 11 years. Over 90 children are involved with the sport at this school, where Gilmore also runs a “Mini Ball” programme for Years 1-4, with the help of some senior students.

As a representative coach for North Canterbury Basketball, all of Gilmore’s teams have qualified for National tournaments over the last six years. Her biggest achievement is winning third place at Nationals in 2009 with her North Canterbury U13 girls’ team.

Who are you coaching this season?

Currently I am coaching a Kaiapoi North School girls’ team in preparation for the Year 7/8 tournament in Oamaru in July. I am coordinating all of the teams and the programme at the school with help from another teacher and a great bunch of parents, who have stepped up to help. I didn’t apply for any Canterbury Country positions this year as I have three children and the youngest is eight months old. My involvement in representative basketball will continue next year. I am also on the committee for North Canterbury Basketball.
