Wildcats in Plate Final

The Canterbury Wildcats have won the Plate section of the WBC championships being played in Porirua with wins over NZ U17 61-48 , and Taranaki 46-44 on Thursday,  and then beating Rotorua on Friday 56-50.

 

On Saturday 8 June 2013 the Wildcats will played the Plate Final for 5th place in the championships against Auckland which had won the play-off against Nelson 57-46.

 

Waikato scored a late basket to clip Otago 61-59 in one championship semi-final while Hutt Valley Porirua beat Harbour Breeze 76-65 in the other semi. Waikato and Hutt Valley Porirua play in the Grand final at 4pm.

 

Canterbury had to play the Finals weekend without the injured New Zealand Junior representative Tessa Boagni and lost the experienced Sonja Akkerman during the tournament.

 

After a slow start, trailing Auckland 10-16 at quarter-time Hayley Gray and Italian Cecila Zambrini closed to trail 24-25 by half-time. Canterbury edged ahead 39-38 in the third-quarter but the tall Auckland side escaped to win 54-48.

 

Lisa Scott hit a free throw with nine seconds remaining to lift Hutt Valley-Porirua Flyers to the 2013 Women’s Basketball Championship crown, upsettting Waikato Wizards 59-58 in the final.

Canterbury Wildcats 46 (Shea Crotty 12, Cecilia Zambrini 11) The Good Home Taranaki Thunder 44 (Toni Scharader 16, Terai Sadler 11).

Canterbury Wildcats 56 (Shea Crotty 21, Cecilia Zambrini 10, 5R, Fran Edmondson 19R) Rotorua Lady Vols 50 (Aroha Haumaha 13). HT: Canty 30-24.

Plate Semi-final: Auckland Lady Hawks 57 (Penina Davidson 13, Amanda Buck 10) Nelson Sparks 46 (Jodi Hikuroa 15, Kat Jones 11).

Plate Final: Auckland Lady Hawks 54 (Jordan Hunter 15, Penina Davidson 12) Canterbury Wildcats 48 (Hayley Gray 15, 9R).

Championship Final: Hutt Valley-Porirua Flyers 59 (Margaret Scott 18, Stella Beck 16) Waikato Wizards 58 (Kalani Purcell 17, Rhaia Spooner-Knight 12)
