Club Basketball took its traditional Queen’s Birthday weekend break while 28 representative teams from around the greater Canterbury region are taking part in the annual JIT tournament which is designed to assist selectors in the region to select their representative teams for the U15, U17 and U19 National championships in July and the U23 Nationals in August. Teams from Country (North, South and Mid Canterbury), Metro (Canterbury) along with two from West Coast (Tasman) are taking part. See BBNZ calendar below
Mid-week Men
The Special Olympics basketball team came from behind in the last few seconds to upset their favourite rival Checkers White 90-89 in the Mid-Week Men’s club basketball competition last Wednesday evening. Bradley Garner who is still at school, made many long penetrating runs through open Checkers defence to slot a well-earned 36 points for the Special O team with support from Craig Bennett and Tracey Thompson. Gordon Hayward replied with 26 for Checkers White.
Sam McNeil sunk an unintended three for Checkers inside the last 30s and with the resulting possession the Special O passed the ball to Craig Bennett who represented New Zealand at the SOWG in Athens in 2011. He drove the length of the court and laid in a match winning basket with 1.5 seconds remaining much to the delight of the many spectators and players.
The defending champion University repulsed a strong challenge from new entrant Sphinx to win 68-50, led by strong efforts from David Baird and Stuart McGirr to remain unbeaten. Raiders overwhelmed Pioneer 119-15, a record for the Raiders club which had previously won the grade in 2005, 06 and 2007 under the organisation of Derek Watson.
The Bishops bounced back to hold off a strong challenge from Bandits to win 56-47 through the efforts of Jack McDougall with 22 points.
University have established a commanding lead in the competition and are looking strong to retain their title while another seven teams are closely bunched in the race to find five more places in the Top six split after round 11 games.
Scorers were:
The Bishops 56 (Jack McDougall 22) Bandits 47 (Shannon Buckingham 15, Rijjin Valiao 14), Raiders 119 (Julian Thompson 28, Jonathan Keast 20, Matt Havill 16, Peter Randle 12, Steve Gainsford 10, Derek Watson 10) Pioneer 15, Burnham 64 (Brad Fraser 19, Nick Collinson 13) Royals 27 (Scott Nugent 6), Special Olympics 90 (Bradley Garner 36, Craig Bennett 12, Tracey Thompson 12) Checkers White 89 (Gordan Hayward 26, Sean Wilton 12, Sam Neill 11, Nigel Buchanan 10), University 68 (David Baird 19, Stuart McGirr 15, Jason Rivett 11) Sphinx 50 (James Taylor 12, Sam Yang 11), Lincoln University 58 (David Crooymans 20, Cam Shearer 20) Goauld 26 ( Ashley Bensley 13).

Mid- week Women
The defending champion Halswell Red remained unbeaten, proving too strong for Royals, winning 67-22 with old hands Jo Mumm, Tracey Buchanan, Sue Bennie and Sarah Corkery being reinforced by young blood Gina Papahadjis who has been busy with her trade-mark long running moves. CYA, led by Carmel Gunn, remained in second place, beating Pioneer 42-18 while University and Checkers (4W, 2L) maintained their third placing with wins over Hi-Rollers and Halswell Green respectively.
Buchanan, nee Shearer, was a regular thorn in many Canterbury Wildcat sides in the 1990’s and is still running the courts alongside many of her former Wildcat opponents.
Unless a team forfeits this Wednesday, then Halswell Red and CYA are destined to meet in the first round final on June 12th, Checkers and University compete for third placing and Halswell Green and Royals match up for the fifth play-off.
Scorers were:
CYA 42 Pioneer 18, Halswell Red 67 Royals 22, University 38 (Nina Pau’u 11) Hi-Rollers 34 (Aria Café 16, Hana Mauafu 10), Checkers 45 Halswell Green 32.
