Men’s Premier Hoben Trophy

Atami bounced back from a lack-lustre opening performance to demolish new-comers Lincoln University 90-45 in the Men’s Premier Hoben trophy basketball competition played in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

Last year’s championship winner Checkers also bounced back with a sound 80-68 defeat over Canterbury University while the Gators-Wolverines clash had all the hallmarks of a final with Wolverines eventually prevailing a tight battle 67-61.

 Atami 90 Lincoln University 45

Atami played with clinical precision to despatch an unco-ordinated Lincoln University. They raced to a 25-3 first-quarter lead, shutting out the students with tight defence and sending eager guards away with strong penetrating runs. Lincoln responded in the second quarter outpointing Atami 15-13 but trailing 18-38 at the half-time break through the efforts of Isaac Williams and Nick Erwood. Atami again dominated the second spell with Rusty Thompson probing small gaps in the students’ defences while slotting a polished 28 points. Ritchie Howell led Atami’s domination on the boards with 15 points and seven rebounds while the guards Paul McFarlin (19) and Sam Dobbs (11) also featured. Atami scored 38 points off Lincoln’s turnovers, slotted 15 against nine three-pointers and scored 23 more from second chance efforts. Atami also took far more shots, landing 36/83 (43%) while Lincoln replied with 19/56 (34%).

Wolverines edges Gators 67-61

Interest grew as an intriguing battle unfolded in Cowles stadium as Gators led Wolverines early 15-8 but by quarter-time Wolverines had edged ahead 26-20 through the efforts of Mike Kinley and Lionel Hopgood. Former Nelson representative Chris Duthie livened up Gators efforts with some penetrating play, slotting 13 points while grabbing 15 rebounds. Gators closed the gap slightly, trailing 37-40 by the half-time break. The third-quarter was hard grasping play, rugged uncompromising defence from both sides and tight marking leading to only 12 points being scored in the period. As the tension mounted in the final quarter, a fired up Kinley put his body through torture as he chased every rebound hard, winning 12 drove through the smallest gaps to slot 21 points and then threw his body all over the court in hunting the loose ball. Hopgood was closely marked with players hanging on his arms as the foul count mounted while Oli Davies (14) and Dean Le Warne (11) responded to Wolverines call. For Gators Jordan Duggan, Kaye McKee and Matt Stevenson made their impressions. Gators had their chances in the closing minutes but astute coaching from Jamie Graham saw Wolverines ride out the Gators challenge which was mentored by returning coach Dave Harrison.

Checkers 80 University 68

Ben Van Oosten (22) returned to Cowles to join forces with his former Royals and NBL team-mate Nat Connell (29) to give Checker the advantage over University in the final quarter. Honours for the match were pretty even, Checkers nudged ahead 19-16 by quarter-time and 36-33 by half-time. Marty Davison led the students attack with strong ball skills, setting up many promising moves but the Checkers defence held firm. Harley Campbell stepped up for University with some strong penetrating baskets while Nathan Campbell returned for a pre-season injury break to make his presence felt. Bede Marsters controlled the defence for Checkers while Pip Johnston and Isaac Tilberry lent strong support.

New entry Pioneer started strongly against Gators and maintained a narrow advantage before sneaking home against 48-40.

University Canterbury 67 Lincoln University 37

Laken Wairau and Tessa Burry led Canterbury University as it eased to a comfortable 21-10 first-quarter lead and extended it to 42-22 by half-time. Jamie Campbell, daughter of well-known former Canterbury basketballer Al, used her height to grab many rebounds. Halswell 55 Minties 49

Halswell and Minties, two of the oldest women’s’ clubs in the competition, fort out another typically gritty encounter with Becky Falloon and Italian import Cecilia Zambini (14) leading the way for Halswell. Gemma Hazeldean was again to the fore for Minties with 26 points and 13 rebounds but lacked support. Canterbury Wildcat Hayley Gray worked hard for little reward while Sara Phillips failed to find range for Minties.

Pioneer 48 Gators 40

Connie Dick was an inspirational leader for Pioneer as they got the edge over Gators. Rachel Kerstin showed a quick turn of speed slotting 11 hard-earned points in the absence of Girls high players Gabby Edmondson and Tessa Boing.  Gators were struggling with a heavy foul count in the first half but, after trailing 15-22 at half-time lifted their efforts in the second spell to put forward many promising moves to close the gap before losing 40-48. Men’s Division One

Wolverines are a regular team on the radar to challenge for top honours in the grade but all sides will keep a close eye on the regular champion Placemakers Wolves Blue. Carl Willocks has made a welcome return to basketball, setting up many promising moves for his side. Master blaster Jamie Graham was not at his best but Nick Purcell got inside the Pioneer defences and Stu Brooker mopped up much loose ball.

For University they accounted for High School Old Boys 66-56. Joe Hammond scored easily in the post (last week he made his points from the outside), and Chris Grant scored off a lot off isolations, and punished  the defence when they tried to go under screens.  It was a close game in the first half, and University managed to build a 10 point lead by the end of the 3rd, which they were able to hold through the whole fourth quarter

 Scorers were:

Wolverines 90 (Carl Willocks 17, Stu Brooker 16, Nick Purcell 15) Pioneer Blue 44 (Ollie Dawe 18, Salem Richards 16), Checkers 67 Pioneer Yellow 64,North Canterbury 87 (Corey Crampton 24, Simon Falloon 20) Ashburton Gannets 42 (Mike Johnstone 20, Jamie Carlson 11), Wolves Blue 89 Gators 48, University 66 HSOB 56. Men’s Under 23 Championship

Under 23 reports written by Daniel Chan

Checkers, Wolverines and Gators are the only unbeaten teams in the MU23 grade after two rounds of play.

Checkers v Pioneer (70 – 60)

Pioneer supercoach Marty Davison nearly rallied his troops to an improbable victory against defending champions Checkers, narrowly losing 70 – 60. Checkers maintained a small buffer throughout the game, but could not pull away, with the feisty Pioneer team getting stops and transition buckets to keep it close. Pioneer guard Lance Henderson led all scorers with 17 points, with help from former Cashmere forward Jimmy Davis (11). Hunia Manuel top scored for Checkers with 16, followed by three point specialist Aidan Ryan (13) and shooting guard Jacob Naylor (10).

 Gators v North Canterbury (114 – 43)

It was a rout of epic proportions as Gators turned up the heat on North Canterbury - the final margin of victory a staggering 71 points. The depth of the strong Gators squad showed, with Jozef Knottenbelt (21), Chris Duthie (20), Kaye McKee (18), Jordan Duggan (17) and Alex Jellie (14) all notching up double digits.  However, the story of the day came from point guard Duthie, who posted a ridiculous stat line of 20 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists and 9 steals – 1 assist and 1 steal off a quadruple-double. North Canterbury’s Scott Edwards provided the only form of resistance with 16 points.

 Wolverines v Royals (107 – 61)

Former St Bede’s combo guard James Levings led all scorers with 26 points as the young Wolverines side remain undefeated this season. Levings received help from school boy superstar Shou Nisbet (18) and captain Oli Davies (17). Wolverines centre Kieran Ball (14) dropped his first double-double of the season after recovering from major off season knee surgery.  For Royals, ex-Shirley Boys’ swingman Simon Hodgson dropped 20 points with Josh Burke adding another 10.

Atami v Varsity (63 – 51)

Shooting guard Alex Dobbs led his Atami side to victory against Varsity with a big 28 points, on an efficient 11/18 FG performance. Atami guard Callan Tucker added a handy 12 points. Varsity led 29 – 26 at the half, but the Atami boys turned up the intensity in the second half, getting some valuable turnovers.  Consistent Varsity big man, Ollie Crawford, provided another double-double with 13 points and 13 boards and captain Rowan Feeney dropped a cool 15 points.

Scorers were:

Atami 63 (Alex Dobbs 28, Callan Tucker 14) University 51 (Ollie Crawford 15, Rowan Feeney 13), Wolverines 107 (James Levings 26, Shou Nisbett 18, Oli Davies 17, Keiran Ball 14) Royals 61 (Simon Hodgson 20, Josh Burke 10), Checkers 70 (Hunia Manuel 16, Aidan Ryan 13, Jacob Naylor 10) Pioneer 60 (Lance Henderson 17, Jimmy Davis 11), Gators 114 (Jozef Knottenbelt 21, Chris Duthie 20, 11R, 9A, 9S, Kaye McKee 18, 13R, Jordan Duggan 17, Alex Jellie 14, 9R), North Canterbury 43 (Scott Edwards 16).
