NCAA Sweepstake Round 1 Results

The two days have been completed and there have been some close games and lots of upsets especially if you are in the West bracket.

Mark Roughan’s (XCM) team Wichita State (9 seed in the West region) beat CBA president’s Tony Mann’s Pittsburgh team who was the (8 seed in that region 73-55 to advance. Pittsburgh of course has Steven Adams playing there, he had 13points to lead his team but it was not enough.

Mike Barnett’s ST Louis (4 seed in the Midwest) beat Sharon Erwood’s New Mexico State (13seed) 63 – 44. St Louis features Kiwi Rob Loe.

BBNZ Board member Greg Williamson’s Memphis (6 seed in the Midwest) survived a last second 3 point shot from St Marys (11 seed) Aussie star Mathew Dellavadova  to win 54 – 52. He could not lose either way as had both teams covered in this game.

Ray Hastie’s Michigan State (3 seed in the West)  took care of CBA Patron Maurie Henshall’s entry Valparaiso(14 seed). This was the former college of Rams Coach Chris Sparks

Michigan State won 65  - 54

Blase Dowall’s Butler team (6 seed in the East) knocked off Sandra Thomas’s Bucknell(11 seed) 68  - 56. Bucknell was of course the alma mater of the late John Watson who owned our Canterbury Rams team for many years.

CBA accountant Mike Stirling’s (West number 1 seed) Gonzaga survived a torrid battle in what looked to be the upset of the day against Southern, Judge Jane McMeeken’s team. Southern was a 16 seed late in the

game by 64-58

Upset city:

Diana Conner’s Davidson (14 seed in the East) had the biggest upset in the bag until John Caldwell’s Marquette rallied late to come back and take the game in the last minute on a driving layup. Davidson managed to get a late rebound and then threw it out of bounds on a simple pass to their 96% foul shooter. Marquette won it 59-58

Tony Mann’s final entry, California (12 seed in the East) had things tied 28 all at halftime vs Nick Purcell’s  UNLV and went on to win 64 - 61  which  looked good for the $50 until Greg Williamson (12 seed Midwest) entry Oregon beat Craig Robinsons (5 seed) Oklahoma State to trump this by virtue that they were ranked below them in the 64 team field. Add in Graeme Walcotts Mississippi ( 12 seed West) upset of J Carmel’s Wisconsin (5)  57 – 46 and the 5 seeds were having a very bad day. Graeme’s team was originally ranked 4 places below Oregon.

Then Jane McMeekens LaSalle (13 seed West) turned around and upset Peter Crowhen’s (4 seed) Kansas state 63 – 61 to get a look at the money.

This was followed by Nino Nabongs Harvard (14 seed West) beating  Lois lough’s New Mexico (4 seed)  68 – 62 to give the Ninja a chance at the cash. But no one expected Tim Bennetts (15 seed) Florida Golf Coast to knock off (2 seed) Zoe Gilpin’s Georgetown. This could be worth $50 to Timmy B.

Normal Transmission

Normal transmission resumed with Paul Conner’s, overall number 1 seed, Louisville taking care of business against Tony Mann’s North Carolina A&T thumping the 16 seed by 79 - 48   North Carolina A&T had to play their way into the 64 team field by beating Liberty on Wednesday night.

Al Robson’s Michigan(4 seed South)  battled Paul Nanai’s South Dakota (12 seed South) finally winning  71 - 56  and Jamie Graham’s Arizona (6 seed) beat Paul Issit’s Belmont (11 seed) 81 - 64
