Four National Championships Up For Grabs

Four Canterbury Red and three North Canterbury Under 13 and Under 15 basketball teams head to their respective National championships on Sunday, a greatbreeding ground for future Canterbury Rams and Wildcats or Tallblacks and Tallferns. Mid Canterbury will also field an U13 Boys and U13 Girls team.

Quarter-Finals are on Wednesday, Semi’s on Thursday followed by play-offs and Finals on Friday.

 

Under 15 National Basketball championships – ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie, October 8th-12th.

The Canterbury Red boys U15 basketball team heads to the National championships at Wellington this week seeded sixth and is in Pool 3 along with Harbour, Waikato Black and New Plymouth. They meet Waikato Black on Monday afternoon with the other two pool games on Tuesday.

The North Canterbury Boys are in Pool two along with second seed Rotorua, Auckland A and Porirua.

In the Premierships held at Nelson in July Canterbury edged out North Canterbury 44-39 in the Grand Final.

The top seed is Waitakere West Premiers in Pool 1. Other South Island boys teams to qualify are Nelson Blue and Otago A. Auckland beat Waitakere West Premiers in last year’s final.

The Canterbury Red Girls are seeded third after winning the Southern Zone Premierships in July, beating Otago A 44-39 in the Grand final while Nelson Blue edged out North Canterbury 68-64 in the third place play-off.

Canterbury, in pool 3, meets Waikato B first up on Monday morning and Harbour Bay on Monday afternoon and Hawkes Bay on Tuesday afternoon.

Nelson Blue, North Canterbury and Otago are the other South Island teams to qualify while top seed in Pool one is Harbour A in Pool one and Thames Valley in pool two is second seed.

Rangiora, under Coach Jess Baker, has been training hard since May, it does not have a lot of height, their skill level has been enhanced and expects to be competitive with the North Island teams with speed and determination on defence. One player, Tyler Courtney has been playing with the Rangiora High team at the Secondary Schools Nationals.

Defending champion Waitakere West which beat Waikato in last year’s final is seeded fourth while Harbour A is top seed.

Meanwhile, the Canterbury Red boys U13 basketball team heads to their National championships at Tauranga and are seeded 5th in Pool 4 along with 4th seed Auckland, Wellington Black and Waikato Gold. They meet Wellington on Monday afternoon with the other two pool games on Tuesday.

Much is expected of the Canterbury Red Boys after it hammered Mid Canterbury A 111-54 in the Grand Final of the Southern Premierships in July at Nelson while Nelson Blue beat North Canterbury 54-46 in the Play off for 3rd place.

Mid Canterbury is seeded 6th in pool 3 while North Canterbury is in Pool 2.

Auckland also beat Waitakere West Premiers in last year’s final. Harbour is top seed, Waitakere West Premiers is second while Auckland is fourth. Canterbury Red finished 6th pace last year while North Canterbury came home in 12th place.

Special Rules Applying to U13s

BBNZ Internal Regulations 2008 Volume 1 Page 32; 10.5.2:

(a) Boys will use the size-6 ball.
(b) Girls will use the size-5 ball.
(c) The three-point line will be ignored and the use of zone defences is banned.

The Canterbury Red Girls are seeded 6th in Pool 3 and meets Hawkes Bay on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday morning plays Waitakere West A followed by third seed Waikato in the evening.

Waitakere West Premiers are top seed in pool one with Rotorua seeded second in pool two. Other South Island teams are Nelson Blue, Mid Canterbury and Otago.

Under 15 National Basketball championships  ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie, October 8th-12th

The Canterbury U15 Boys Basketball team, under coach Ben Sheat, made a resounding start to the Boys Under 15 National championships being played at the ASB Sports centre, Kilbirnie in Wellington winning 117-31 while in the U15 Girls tournament Canterbury chalked up two strong opening wins.

The Canterbury boys play New Plymouth first up Tuesday morning and then the strong Harbour side late in the afternoon for a place in the main quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The defending champion and top seed Waitakere West Premiers are looking strong with two powerful wins on the first day.

The Te Haere Stirling coached Canterbury Red Girls, seeded third, looks set to improve on its 12th placing last year thumping Waikato B 63-31 in the morning and Harbour B 82-64 last evening. They meet Hawkes Bay Tuesday afternoon with a place in the Top 8 quarters already assured for Wednesday.

The Canterbury Under 13 Boys team, coached by Craig Robinson, made a positive start, whipping Wellington Black 75-35 in the afternoon and meets Waikato Gold on Tuesday morning before a much tougher encounter against Auckland A in the late game and hopefully a place in the top 8 quarters on Wednesday.

Waitakere West Premiers, Counties-Manukau, Harbour A and Palmerston North Green all recorded two wins to progress to Wednesday’s Top 8 quarters.

 

Meanwhile the Canterbury Girls, under coach Tony Irvine, started with an improved effort to down Hawkes Bay 59-44 on Monday. They play Waitakere West A first up Tuesday morning, a win to put them into Wednesday’s Top 8 quarters before they clash with 3rd seed Waikato A at teatime on Tuesday.

Rotorua, Waitakere West Premiers, Counties-Manukau and  Porirua all recorded two wins to progress to Wednesday’s Top 8 quarters.
