Breakers Win Both Games

A return to form by Gary Wilkinson and another near triple-double from Cedric Jackson helped the NZ Breakers extend their winning streak to an ANBL-best four in Adelaide tonight.

The Breakers used a 9-0 start to the final quarter to pull clear of the bottom-placed Adelaide 36ers and emerge with a 86-73 victory after an evenly contested first three quarters.

The win takes the defending champions' road record to 4-2 for the season and their overall mark to a league-best 9-3, with a two-game lead over the Perth Wildcats.

Wilkinson, the league MVP contender, exploded back into form after a quiet couple of weeks as he's worked through a niggling injury.

The big American finished with a season-high 30 points on a sizzling 13-of-18 shooting. He also had five boards, an assist and a steal in an emphatic reminder of his qualities.

The Breakers survived a horror night from the previously hot-to-trot Thomas Abercrombie, who missed all nine of his shots and was held to just a single point to go with seven rebounds and three assists.

But Jackson had another of those complete games with 11 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and a pair of steals. He continues to prove what a great pickup he was with his speed, defensive mindset and all-round capabilities.

Mr Consistent Daryl Corletto added 15 points, Mika Vukona had 13 points and five boards, while backup centre Alex Pledger backed up his Thursday career-high with a handy 13 points and seven boards in 15 minutes on court.

The Breakers had trailed by a point (44-45) at the major break, largely thanks to a 15-point first half by Wilkinson and another efficient display by guard Corletto who had 10 points on four-of-seven shooting.

They did well to stay in the game considering the previously in-form Abercrombie missed all seven of his shots in the first half and failed to trouble the scorers. But with Wilkinson running hot - he missed just two of his nine first-half shots-and point guard Cedric Jackson finding the open men well to tally eight assists, the Breakers stayed in the race nicely.

They then got their noses in front in a low-scoring third quarter, before taking a firm grip in the opening minutes of the fourth.

The North Shore club next hosts the 6-5 Cairns Taipans in Auckland on Friday night.

NZ Breakers 86 (Gary Wilkinson 30, Daryl Corletto 15, Mika Vukona 13, Alex Pledger 13) Adelaide 36ers 73 (Daniel Johnson 17, Diamon Simpson 16, Chris Warren 16, Stephen Weigh 8) at Adelaide Arena. 1Q: 23-27, HT: 44-45, 3Q: 61-60.
