COACHING SAFETY NET LAUNCHED

Basketball New Zealand, in a pilot programme with Sparc, officially launched its online “Coaching Safety Net” on Monday.

The programme introduces coaches to a code of ethics and basic safety concepts for players and coaches in basketball, available in a 30-minute online module on BBNZ’s website, www.basketball.org.nz.

“This is an introductory course, helping coaches understand the basic roles and responsibilities that they have as a coach,” BBNZ’s coach development officer Bill Eldred said.

“It goes through things like basic coaching, a code of ethics, injury prevention and treatment and safety guidelines. It is aimed mainly at beginner coaches but hope that all coaches will complete it in time . . . Coaches can do it in their own time, at their leisure, and it should no longer than 30 minutes.”

The Coaching Safety Net also identifies key elements of a coaches role, responsibilities to their players, information about providing a safe environment and identifying key strategies for coaches and managers protection.

Basketball New Zealand is taking part in the pilot scheme along with Surf Life Saving New Zealand, with one of Sparc’s aims being to create a generic coaching safety net that can be used by other sports to develop and manage their coaching communities and to expand the learning experiences for coaches in the future.
