Undermanned Breakers Beaten

The Gold Coast Blaze hammered an undermanned New Zealand Breakers 94-71 in the final regular season match of the season on Sunday night.

With the minor premiership already wrapped up, Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis rested strike weapons Cedric Jackon, Gary Wilkinson, Daryl Corletto and CJ Bruton ahead of the playoffs.

In their place development players Josh Bloxham, Dion Prewster and Morgan Natanahira were called into the side.

Blaze coach Joey Wright only rested Adam Gibson (calf tightness), allowing the rest of his roster to get some form ahead of the playoffs after recent losses to New Zealand and Townsville.

Wright's men responded, punishing the Breakers with a staggering 12 three-point buckets made at 67 per cent.

Guard Chris Goulding led the shooting spree with four straight triples in the first quarter on his way to 20 points, while Mark Worthington (13 points) and Adris Deleon (14) also reached double figures.

Tom Abercrombie (15) and Alex Pledger (12) toiled for the visitors, but with the depth of talent rested for the match the club could never truly threaten.

But Henry (11 points, 9 rebounds) and Bloxham (10 points, 2 assists) showed glimpses of the club's future.

Lemanis praised his young players' efforts, explaining the final round travel to Townsville and the Gold Coast forced him to rest his star players.

"It's one of those unfortunate situations with the scheduling ... there's a lot of travel involved in it," he said.

"I sat with our medical staff during the week and we planned it out. They were very cautious of not overloading people with niggles this weekend.

"I enjoyed the way that those (young) guys played, it was a good opportunity for them to be rewarded for all the work they put in during the season.

"Those guys come in and bust their asses at training every day."

Wright was pleased with the way his players shot the lights out, but pointed to their defensive efforts as reasons to be optimistic for the playoffs.

"Those were tough shots, we were seven-from-seven from the three-point line at one point," he said.

"They played hard - they could have not played hard (with New Zealand resting players).

"When we're playing the best defence we can play, I think we play the best defence in the league."

The game opened as a three-point shootout with Goulding - promoted to the starting lineup - burying three-consecutive long bombs on his way to 14 points for the quarter.

Worthington added 12 including two triples to hand the Blaze a 31-23 advantage at the first break.

Deleon caught fire in the second term, peeling off 10 quickfire points to set up a commanding 55-34 half-time lead.

The young Breakers showed some pluck in the third quarter as the Blaze took the foot off the pedal, winning the term 22-15, before the Blaze rallied in the final quarter with a 9-0 run to seal the win.

Gold Coast (third) travel to Perth (second) for its first playoff match on Sunday while New Zealand (first) host Townsville (fourth) in Auckland on Friday.

Gold Coast Blaze 94 (Goulding 20, Deleon 14, Worthington 12, Hudson 10, Garlepp 10)
New Zealand Breakers 71 (Abercrombie 15, Pledger 12, Henry 11, Vukona 10, Bloxham 10)
