This is the second year in a row that Calamvale has won the Under 15 Youth Girls Lightning Premiership. This year however they were pushed all the way by a gutsy Kedron outfit.
The 2008 Under 15 Youth Girls Lightning Premiership had five teams competing - Calamvale Gold, Calamvale Blue, Kedron, Morningside and Jindalee. The concept of the Lightning Premiership is to introduce new players in each team to the game in a fun and fast environment. And it certainly was fast.
Right from the first whistle, Kedron made it clear they were a finals contender with a sound 9.1.55 defeat of competitive Calamvale Blue side 3.1.19. Jindalee being the newcomers to the competition (and some of the smallest Under 15s anyone has ever seen) also got off to a great start with a 9-7-61 win over Morningside 0-1-1 that did well to put in a team as they have struggled for numbers over the past year.
In the next round with Calamvale Gold winning convincingly over fellow clubmen Calamvale Blue and Kedron solidly beating Jindalee, it was always going to be a two horse race to the finals.
In the final between Kedron and Calamvale Gold it was neck and neck at the halftime break with the scores locked at 2 goals 1 a piece. There was some fierce tackling and some great individual skills shown by both teams in the first half and it was difficult to pick a winner at this stage. Early in second half however, Calamvale Gold went away to a couple of goal lead and never looked back with some fantastic teamwork to move the ball down to their forwards. The backline was also inspirational in defence with accurate kicking down field to keep Kedron to just the one goal for the second half.
Calamvale Gold winning the final 5.3.30 to Kedronâs 3.1.19. A fantastic final that hopefully bodes well for a good quality season with Yeronga also coming into the main season.
They unfortunately were unavailable for the preseason cup.
Thank you to Kedron FC who hosted the event and also for the ladies in the canteen and the timekeepers.
Good luck for the upcoming season girls!
