The 2009 Under 18 Youth Girls State team has been selected and there are quite a few new faces in the line up from last yearâs team that toured Victoria.
With over 40 girls nominating from around the state, selection for the upcoming Interstate Challenge against Victoria was competitive and not easy. The Selectors have come up with a great mix of girls from around the state that has a great balance of experience with five girls playing with the Open Womenâs team at the Nationals this year. The team was picked from performances in the Under 18 Youth Girls Club Competition, Womenâs League in both Brisbane and Cairns, Qld State Championships, Cairns versus USA Freedom team and also the Brisbane Lions Cup (school 15-a-side competition).
In 2009 the team includes six girls from North Queensland which shows that interest in Womenâs Football at the north end of the state is alive and kicking. Open Womenâs State players Sarah Sailor and Angie Nadredre will be playing for the Under 18 Youth Girls team which will really strengthen the team. 2008 players Eileen Ludwick and Lauren James will also bring some great experience to team. Mary David, who starred recently for Cairns against the USA Freedom team, and Kathleen Peter from Djarragun College have also been included in the team for the first time.
Other new selections include Cleo Davis, Jane Jacobs and Madi Crowley-Long all of whom competed for South East Queensland Flames at the 2008 Under 16 Youth Girls State Championships. Indy Sleeth who was awarded the Playersâ Player at last yearâs Interstate Challenge has again been selected and will really bolster the back line for the team after a strong year as captain of the Under 18 team, the Gold Coast Warriors.
April Vaughan had a strong appearance in the Brisbane Lions Cup for Helensvale SHS and was unlucky in 2008 not to go away with the South-East Qld Flames due to a bout of glandular fever. With a QAS scholarship in volleyball, April will be a very handy addition to the team as an athlete.
All-Australian player Katie Brennan will be looking for Queenslandâs first win after a great National Championships this year particularly after the Senior girls kept Victoria to their lowest winning margin of the Champs in June this year.
The girls will be playing at Coolangatta AFC on Saturday 19th September and Monday 21st September against the Victorian Under 18 Youth Girls team.
