Competition football in the north east of Tasmania began around the 1900's during the tin mining boom. Many small associations existed in the area from Scottsdale to Goulds Country.
There have been many changes in the northeast during the century and with it came changes to the football scene. After a break during the 2nd World War, football resumed in 1945.
The governing body reformed and became the NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL UNION, under the guidance of Harry Horsburg as Secretary and George De Haas as president. The clubs in the competition were Ringarooma, Legerwood, Branxholm, Derby, Winnaleah and Pioneer.
In 1967 Bridport joined the N.E.F.U., in 1982 the Scottsdale Crows and in 1985 Lilydale joined, making a six team competition again. 1993 the Fingal District Football Association disbanded and the St Helens club joined us and in 1997. The 2001 season saw Fingal go into recess and eventually re affiliate with the NTFA. Before the 2011 season Lilydale moved to the NTFA Div 2 and 2012 Ringarooma went into recess leaving the NEFU with a five team competition encompassing the Dorset and Break O'day Municipalities. In 2013 St Helens changed their name to East Coast Swans and their colours included orange as per GWSydney
Registration numbers for seniors and reserves total approximately 400. Our Under 16's competition provides football for 120 boys, and the introduction of Under 13's and Under 10's has been a bonus for all clubs. There are upwards of 160 young hopefuls at 9.30 am start each Saturday to show their skills.
