The Victorian Metro Boys and Girls have taken out the national title at the Under 16 Australian National Basketball Championships, held in Gosford NSW.

The tournament was contested by metro and country teams throughout Australia and New Zealand from June 30 - July 7.

The under 16 Vic Metro Girls met NSW Country in the gold medal game, winning 66 to 59. Flying out of the blocks early Vic Metro looked set to go through the final comfortably. But NSW Country slowly chipped away coming within 2 points late in the game, before a determined Vic Metro remained undefeated winning by 7.

Coach Ben Cukier was delighted with his team, particularly after early injuries hampered the teams' preparation "our preparation wasn't ideal but the girls stayed focused and got on with the job. It was a team effort with everyone playing their role."

The under 16 Vic Metro Boys defeated Vic Country 69 to 51 in their undefeated run to the gold medal. The 18 point victory the smallest winning margin for them of the tournament.

Vic Metro coach Alan McAughtry was delighted with his teams' undefeated effort and praised their teamwork. "It was a real team effort with all 10 kids contributing. Three weeks ago our defence was really poor, I was pleased with their work rate and in the end we had the best defence of the tournament, a credit to the boys".
