Hampton Football Club, and the umpires who started this initiative with the SFL four years ago, will sport pink this Mothers Day weekend (12-13 May) as players compete in the fourth annual Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) Pink Footy & Netball Day.
BCNA’s Pink Footy & Netball Day runs from 12 - 13 May 2012 and is a chance for footy and netball clubs across Australia to show their support for, and pay tribute to, women and families from their local communities who have been affected by breast cancer.
Money raised over the pink weekend will go directly to BCNA to support its work in ensuring women diagnosed with breast cancer anywhere in Australia are provided with the very best information, services and support possible.
Michael Bennett from the Hampton Football Club urged locals to get behind the club this Pink Footy & Netball Day. “It’s the first time we have hosted the Pink Footy Day in conjunction with the SFL Umpires Association, and we are extremely pleased to be involved in this cause.”
“Pink Footy & Netball Day is a great opportunity for the whole community to put on a show of strength and support for women and families affected by breast cancer,” Michael said. “We hope that everyone will come down, wear some pink, get involved and cheer on the teams.”

BCNA CEO Maxine Morand, herself a breast cancer survivor, says Pink Footy & Netball Day is a great way for sporting communities to demonstrate their support not just for women affected by breast cancer, but for their families and friends too.
“When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer her loved ones go through their own difficult journey. Getting involved in Pink Footy & Netball Day is a way clubs can support those who support our women,” Maxine said.
“More than 14,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. The funds raised via Pink Footy & Netball Day are critical to the work BCNA does in offering women from all over Australia, ongoing and up-to-date information, services and support.”
Ms Morand added that not only does Pink Footy & Netball Day raise funds to provide information and support for women, but also provides a meaningful way for clubs to get together in celebration and remembrance of the women in their club and community affected by breast cancer.
“Currently one third of women diagnosed with breast cancer live outside major cities and face additional challenges, such as isolation and loneliness, as well as limited contact with specialist health professionals or travelling long distances to receive treatment. One of the most important reasons for BCNA to host Pink Footy & Netball Day is to make sure that these women know that they are not alone on their breast cancer journey.”
