As previously advised, the AFF has mandated use of the Foil Lame Bib for all National Competitions from January 1, 2009.
The first such competion will be the D.H.McKenzie event in Canberra April 17-19, 2009.
In the AFF announcement, it was stated that "The AFF understands that some international manufacturers, as well as some local Australian suppliers, are making available kits to adapt the bibs on existing foil masks"
This has not materialised and currently, only new FIE level (1600 NW) maks are available with the new Foil Lame Bib.
Fencing Victoria events do not require FIE level masks. As such, it has been decided that until manufacturers and equipment suppliers are in a position to provide either the retro-fitting of a kit (also known as a lame "sock") or produce a non-FIE Foil Mask incorporating the conductive bib, use of masks incorporating the conductive bib will be voluntary.
This position will be reviewed following conclusion of the D.H.Mckenzie event and a date for implementation for FV events announced.
**THIS EXEMPTION APPLIES TO FENCING VICTORIA STATE COMPETITIONS ONLY**
The AFF Requirement that "from 1 January 2009, for all AFF national foil tournaments for all age groups, the requirement will be to have a mask with the conductive bib" remains in effect.
Other State bodies have not clarified the postions for their State events - fencers intending to compete interstate/internationally are encouraged to check with the relevant governing body as to equipment requirements.
Also, fencers intending to compete in Canberra in April are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to obtain the necessary FIE level mask early to practice with the expanded target area offered by the lame bib.
