Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Information and suggestions
Fencing Victoria takes the health and well-being of our community very seriously, as such we would like to provide you with the most up to date information and make some fencing gear specific suggestions. We have sought advice from Dr. David Hughes (Chief Medical Officer, Australian Institute of Sport) & The Head of Sport, Recreation & Racing (Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts & Regions). Dr Hughes recommendations to minimise the risks of infection are that gear should not be shared & that all gear should be disinfected after use.
Our suggestions to clubs are:
Masks: It is possible that the virus can live on metal mesh for days, we suggest masks are not shared and that club masks should be sprayed & wiped with Isopropyl Alcohol 99.8%/vol (Isopropanol). Club masks should also be washed at regular intervals.
Gloves: should be washed and dried thoroughly between use. Clubs may also spray gloves inside (by turning them inside out) & outside with Isopropanol.
Jackets/Plastrons/Breeches: should be laundered between shared use.
Club body-wires: may also be wiped with Isopropanol.
Clubs should either provide or request their members self-provide hand sanitiser (with a high percentage of alcohol)
As with readily available advice, self-isolation is recommended if you have recently travelled or have been unwell.
ADVICE FROM THE VICTORIAN DEPARTMENT OF JOBS, PRECINCTS & REGIONS:
Health authorities are continuing to closely monitor the situation following the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Currently there are no known transmissions of the infection in the community in Victoria. All known cases in Victoria are due to travel overseas or through a direct link with a traveller.
At this point in time our advice around major events/sporting events/creative events and other public gatherings is that they can still go ahead, and people should go about their lives as normal.
Below are several links for further information.
Yours Sincerely
Kayt Spano GAICD
