Nominations received for Executive Director Positions Are:
Julie Burbidge: Nomination for FV Director position, May 2019
I am a senior fencer member of Fencing Victoria, fencing epée, and a club member of both Melbourne Fencing Centre and Olympia-Monash. I returned to fencing in 2015 after a long break but I first started fencing in 1989 at Monash University, originally fencing both foil and epée. Throughout my fencing career I have competed successfully at both state and national level and I currently fence in both open and veteran competitions.
I recognise Fencing Victoria as having a vital role in supporting all its members to enjoy their connection to fencing. I am keen to assist Fencing Victoria to maintain members’ engagement in the sport, to encourage and expand participation at both local and national level, and to support local club and fencer initiatives which foster strong ties with the international fencing community.
Outside fencing I hold the position of Copyright and Intellectual Property Manager at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), a statutory authority within the Victorian state government. My work equips me with proven administration skills and a sound knowledge of governance and legal compliance which can be useful to the Fencing Victoria Board. I have also just recently completed training as a Member Protection Information Officer, with the aim of helping Fencing Victoria to implement more robust complaint handling and resolution processes.
I have not been on the Fencing Victoria Board before, nor involved in the committees of Fencing Victoria’s predecessor, VAFA.
Emily Marotta: Nomination for FV Director position, May 2019
I have been a part of the Fencing Victoria community for almost 14 years and I have absolutely loved being a part of this community.
If successfully nominated to the Fencing Victoria board I would bring a number of skills with me. Firstly, I have experience as an elite fencer and would bring that perspective with me to the board. It gives me a unique perspective on all matters that we would discuss as part of the board. It also means I have relationships with other fencers in that group, which gives me a keen insight into this membership of Fencing Victoria.
Secondly, I have been a fencing coach for almost 10 years, and through this have had a different perspective of fencing and what members of this sector of our community would benefit from. Coaching has also given me skills, such as having being able to converse with parents and learning how best to negotiate difficult situations.
Finally, I also work full time as a Podiatrist and I think that the skills I have acquired through this would benefit me on the Fencing Victoria board. I work as part of a large dynamic team, and I have developed skills such as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. I also work with people from different parts of society, those from all multicultural and socio-economic groups, giving me a unique perspective on all of the different communities that belong to the community that is Fencing Victoria.
I look forward to hopefully re-joining the board of Fencing Victoria.
Emily Marotta
