Regional coordinators form the Active After-school
Communities (AASC) program in Melbourne recently
participated in a fencing professional development facilitated by Pieter Leeuwenburgh
State Development Manager for Fencing Victoria and Chris Jones of Swordfighters
Australia.
Fencing Victoria
were keen to show off their state of the art facilities at the newly completed
North Melbourne Football Club development. This facility is seen as a major drawcard in enabling pathway
opportunities for children who have participated in fencing programs in the
AASC.
““The State Fencing Centre provides us with terrific
opportunities to train new coaches, develop athletes and further expose the
community to the sport of fencing. Schools students of all ages and adults in the North and the West now
have greater opportunities to try fencing and participate in development
programs, through the work we are doing at the Centre with the City of
Melbourne and the North Melbourne Life Learning Centre” said
Leeuwenburgh
The session saw the regional coordinators put through their
paces with a number of games and activities that replicated a typical AASC
session as well as familiarise themselves with the different types of weapons
used in competition.

Sword Fighters Australia
has been running and coordinating AASC Fencing
sessions for 2 years at numerous Melbourne Metro School
Programs.
With the unique ability to use Plastic
Fencing Masks and Plastic Replica Foils, the sessions are able to teach
children the skills of fencing using activities and fun games.
Providing 20 sets of equipment, a safe environment
(Flat ground inside or outside), has resulted in hundreds of children
participating in sport who may not be "sport orientated".
Chris is an Accredited Australian
Fencing coach, has his Working with Children Check &
Police Check, as well as being an elite level Australian Representative at
home and internationally.
Fencing is an exciting fast paced sport
that is open to girls and boys of any age and allows the interaction and fun
competition between different skill levels.
