Women's Previews - Round 5

Sturt Sabres v Forestville Eagles, Sat. April 14, 6:30pm at Pasadena

When traditional rivals Sturt and Forestville meet, the results are often unpredictable. The Eagles would be smarting from their loss in last year's grand final, but buoyed by the performance of Round 4 player of the week Dee Ranford in last week's upset victory over North. Sturt couldn't be happier with their undefeated 4 game road trip to start the season, and the performance of Angela Marino and Bowley cubed has been impressive. What better way to highlight the rebirth of the Sabre Cave than a rematch of the 2006 Grand Finalists?

North Adelaide Rockets v Woodville Warriors, Sat. April 14, 6:30pm at Hillcrest

North were disappointed to lose to Forestville last week, and may take their frustration out on Woodville. Tania Dhu has been a rock in both wins and losses, and Erin Lorenzini is scoring consistently. The Rockets also have a number of juniors contributing, including Lauren Mansfield and Jamie-Lee Peris. Woodville have again showed signs of improvement this year, Jodie Barratt continues to be the most consistent Warrior, and Woodville would be buoyed by the form of Sharna Breavington a reserves victory against a reasonably full Eastern group this week. ABA games are at a different level, however, and you would expect North to recover strongly in this one.

Norwood Flames v Southern Tigers, Sat. April 14, 6:30pm at Mars

Norwood were outclassed by a superior Bearcat outfit last week, but their full court defensive pressure has caused problem for every opponent this far. Without Natalie Hurst and Kellie Abrahms, Nicole Romeo has been forced to work harder to create her own opportunities in offence this year, but has continued to provide excellent defensive pressure against more experienced point guards. The Tigers sat out last week, and would be keen to keep in touch with league leading South and Sturt. Expect Tracey Beatty to dominate against the shorter Flames, but expect in-form guards Leah Cannon and Tamara Walker to have a good battle with Norwood's backcourt.

South Adelaide Panthers v West Adelaide Bearcats, Sat. April 14, 6:30pm at Marion

The Panthers are a revelation this year, sitting with Sturt undefeated atop the premiership ladder. One could argue that they are yet to play either the favoured Sabres or Bearcats, and their victory over Forestville was in the absence of Dee Ranford. Still, they have done everything necessary so far, and this game will be a great opportunity to gauge their progress. The Bearcats started the season slowly, but unleashed against Norwood last week. The pre-season absence of Lauren King, Sam Woosnam and Jess Mahoney has affected them, but with a month of training, they appear to be gearing up towards full strength. You should see great front  court matchups  between  Jenine  Browne, Kerrin Truslove, Woosnam and King, and also at the point guard position between former Hall's  medallists  Jess Mahoney and Vikki Kelson. This one is too close to call.
