Men's Game Reviews - Round 16

Central Districts Lions v Forestville Eagles, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Starplex
Forestville 99 (Riley Luettgerodt 42, Brad Sullivan, Doug McDonald-Taylor 13) defeated Centrals 86 (Zane Reeves 26, Matthew Clark 22, Lachlan Parker, Jacob Templeton 13)

The Forestville Eagles, with so much to play for, took almost the entire match before they could shake off the persistent Lions. Forestville needed a win to seal a finals berth and also depending upon other results, a chance to climb up the ladder to avoid an elimination final in 3 weeks. At halftime only 2 points separated the sides, the Eagles narrowly in front 50-48. The Lions defence had trouble restricting Riley Luettgerodt who finished with 21 points in the half on his way to a game high score of 42 points. Centrals had Zane Reeves and Matthew Clarke who were both active, particularly Clarke who hit five 3 pointers during the half. In the third quarter both sides traded baskets but Forestville were able to slip away to an 8 point lead after Doug MacDonald-Taylor scored with 2:38 remaining in the term. The locals did close the margin to just 4 points at the last break. In the last, the Eagles scored the first basket but two buckets to Lachlan Parker including a 3 pointer closed the margin. When Jacob Templeton scored from the foul line with 2:53 remaining scores were locked at 82-82. MacDonald-Taylor scored the next basket, a three pointer, and from that point Forestville were never headed scoring 14 points to 4 by Centrals, with 10 of those points from the free throw line. Forestville's win has now guaranteed them a finals berth.

Eastern Mavericks v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Mount Barker
Eastern 112 (Ben Madgen 30, Brad Hill 29, Jordan Dodman 18, Shane Breheny 14) defeated South Adelaide 89 (Sammy Gazzo 32, Brian Finnis 19, Steve Pilkington 16, Lachlan Prest 11)

The Eastern men welcomed back Shane Breheny who missed his first game in four seasons against Centrals last round. At the beginning of the game the locals were sitting 6th, two games adrift of Forestville with 3 matches to play.  The South men, having won only 4 games this season, were sitting 8th with a finals berth out of the equation. At halftime Eastern were down by a solitary point, 51-52.  South guard Sammy Gazzo was proving a handful for the Eastern defence bagging 23 points to that stage of the game. Gazzo's haul included seven 3 pointers from 12 shots taken. For Eastern, Brad Hill (20 points) and Ben Madgen (17 points) were the focal point for the Mavericks scoring opportunities.  The locals came out with all guns blazing in the third quarter to seal the result when they scored 32 points to 10. In the first 2 minutes of this period, baskets to Jordan Dodman, Madgen, Cameron Myles and Hill saw Eastern rattle on 10 points before South's Brian Finniss scored. By the end of the quarter a match-winning 21 point buffer had been established when the Mavs led 83-62. The demise of South was only compounded when Mavs guard Will Smith hit two threes in the last to keep the Panthers at bay.

Southern Tigers v Norwood Flames, Sat, July 10th, 8.15pm at Morphett Vale
Norwood 77 (Dan Thompson 17, David Cooper, Corey Ottey 13) defeated
Southern 64 (Tristan Braithwaite 20, Joel Goodenough, Michael Florence 13, Paul Smith 10)

In only his second game back from injury, Norwood's Dan Thompson proved to be the ace up the sleeve for Coach Rupert Sapwell. In a close match Thompson scored all his points from inside the keyway converting at 62%. He also pulled down 11 rebounds, 5 offensively and 6 defensively to go with his points.  All of this was achieved in less than 13 minutes of court time. Scores were tied at the end of the first period 26 all. Norwood up by 4 points at halftime and at three quarter time the Tigers held a 1 point advantage 52-51 after a low scoring third quarter. Southern were able to obtain slight advantage in the third, mainly due to the outside shooting of Joel Goodenough who hit two 3s and Tristan Braithwaite who hit one. Norwood's downfall was its poor scoring rate in the first 5 minutes of the quarter, only Sam Grantham scored a basket from the floor. In the last term the Tigers stayed within a basket until the midpoint of the quarter. At that point of the game Corey Ottey scored and then Todd Matthews backed that up with a basket and a converted foul shot to edge Norwood 5 points clear 63-58. Braithwaite converted from the foul line but then Norwood went on a mini run. Thompson scored the next basket, racking up his 5th point of the quarter, that was followed by a 3 pointer to Matthews and a further 2 baskets to Thompson which set up an unassailable 10 point buffer. As the quarter ended, Southern's only score was a pair of foul shots whilst Thompson added another basket to his tally and Ottey hit a 3 pointer with 14 seconds remaining that was the last basket of the match. Norwood's win moved them up to 2nd position and inflicted Southern's 10th loss from their last 11 games played.

North Adelaide Rockets v Woodville Warriors, Sat, July 10th, 6.30pm at Hillcrest
Woodville 94 (Mark Egel 22, Cameron Wilson 18, Chris Furness 14) defeated
North Adelaide 88 (Pero Vasilijevic 28, Michael Zorich 16, Nick Hambour 14, Rhys Elliott 10)

North hosted Woodville, having won their last three encounters against the Lions, Panthers and Flames, and Woodville fronted having lost their last three games against Norwood, Sturt and West Adelaide, all sides sitting above them on the premiership table. With North in a position to avoid a knock-out final with a win, most punters selected North to be successful at home. Little separated the sides in the first two quarters with North leading at halftime 48-44 after Pero Vasilijevic scored the last two baskets of the half. The 3rd quarter started well for the Warriors with Mark Egel and Ben McKay both hitting 3s in the first 2 minutes of play, the McKay 3 pointer levelling the scores. In a free flowing quarter of basketball both sides were able to post good scores. At the end of the period Woodville had hit 32 points and North had compiled 23 points. Woodville's tally put them in front 76-74, and they had an even spread of scorers with 8 players contributing to the total. In the last, opening baskets to Egel from the foul line and Adam Miller increased the margin to 9 points, the biggest of the contest to that point of the game. As the term wore on, North closed the gap through Michael Zorich, Nick Hambour and Matthew Lycett and with 6:05 remaining, took the lead 82-81. Scores were level with 2:51 remaining after Hambour converted a pair of foul shots. Woodville was able to set up the win after a pair of Vasilijevic foul shots closed the margin to just 2 points 90-88. McKay and Matt Hunt hit four from four from the foul line between them in the dying seconds of the game to claim victory.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Sturt Sabres, Sun, July 11th, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
West Adelaide 77 (Anthony Spadavecchia 26, Kurtis Phillips , Ben Evans 11) defeated
Sturt 71 (Jacob Holmes 20, Corey Maynard 11, Darren Ng, Marcus Ng 10)

West had a major incentive to win this match with the minor premiership guaranteed if they could win at home.  The Sabres' form has been a little shaky over recent weeks with player availability affected by overseas commitments. The match turned into a hotly contested affair with little separating the sides throughout the game. Big first quarters from Bearcat Kurtis Phillips and Sabres Jacob Holmes and Marcus Ng resulted in only a 1 point difference at the end of the first, West up 19-18 after a Ben Evans 3 pointer 6 seconds from the break. At halftime the scores were level 39-39 with West's Josh Bond and Sturt's Mark Bauer doing the bulk of the scoring for their respective sides. In the third, the Sabres broke away mainly due to the efforts of Jacob Holmes who gathered 10 points during this period. He was well supported by Corey Maynard who had his most productive term. At the last break Sturt led 63-55, a significant margin given the closeness of the scores throughout the match to that point of the game. In the last West opened with Phillips, Steve Watts, Bond, Evans and Adam Pearce. Both Evans and Watts scored in the first couple of minutes before Anthony Spadavecchia was re-introduced back into the game with 8:02 left to play. His inclusion turned the game when he scored 15 points for the rest of the quarter to finish the game high scorer with 26 points. Sturt stopped to a walk, only registering 3 baskets and 2 foul shots for the entire quarter. West finished with 22 points for the period and chalked up their 9th win in succession to claim top spot.
