Women's Game Reviews - Round 14

North Adelaide Rockets v South Adelaide, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Hillcrest
North Adelaide 81 (Jo Hill, Shannon McKay 20, Tayla Corbell 13, Stana Zecevic 11) defeated South Adelaide 67 (Claire Johnson 14, Rachael Litster 11, Sarah Peddle 10)

North’s victory over South restored the team back into the top five at the expense of the Southern Tigers, but the teams still remain equal on 7 wins each. North and South opened this match with plenty of free flowing basketball with a combined score of 52 points for the first quarter, North in front 31-21. North hit five 3 point shots during this period with Shannon McKay scoring three of them on her way to compiling 11 points for the quarter. North won the second and third quarters by a couple of baskets before starting the last quarter with an 18 point lead 69-51. That margin got out to over 20 points in the last before South trimmed the score back towards the end of the game. Jo Hill finished with a double – double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. South interestingly took 19 more shots on the night than North.

Southern Tigers v Central Districts Lions, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Morphett Vale
Southern 88 (Madelaine Cunningham 17, Ashleigh Spencer 14, Gilly Hendrie, Stephanie Gates 13) defeated Centrals 55 (Amber Land 18, Elizabeth Oermann, Maryanne Eime 8)

Southern needed to bounce back after their disappointing result against the Eagles the night before and did so by comprehensively winning the last 3 quarters of their match against the Lions. The third quarter was where the damage was done with guards Madelaine Cunningham and Gilly Hendrie doing most of the scoring. At 4:53 remaining Shenae Hosking scored the Lions’ last basket of the quarter, scores 45-33.  The Tigers went on to score the next 15 points before Amber Land broke the run 38 seconds into the last term. At that time the Tigers were in complete control with a 25 point lead, 60-35.  Southern’s win keeps their finals hopes alive with 4 minor round matches left to play.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Norwood Flames, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Port Adelaide
West Adelaide 75 (Irene Sourlatzis 20, Nikita-Lee Martin 16, Trudy Holland 14, Sam Woosnam 11) defeated Norwood 50 (Rachel Herrick 14, Cara Boothey, Breanna Gleeson 10)

With West surprising losers the night before against the Panthers on the last basket of the night they were fired up for a good performance at home against the Norwood Flames. Both clubs are locked together and fighting for that all important third place at the end of the minor round. West led 17-6 after an Irene Sourlatzis 3 pointer with 2:52 of the first quarter left to play. To that point of the game Norwood had struggled offensively with centre Rachel Herrick the only solid contributor. West had a number of scorers led by Trudy Holland, Nikita-Lee Martin and Irene Sourlatzis who went on to be the game high scorer. By halftime Norwood had fallen 17 points behind when they produced their lowest first half score of the season (19 points). Four West 3 pointers in the third period including two to Sam Woosnam in 6 seconds of play only compounded Norwood’s problems further when they fell more than 25 points behind. Norwood never threatened, but the positive from the game was Breanna Gleeson who scored 10 points at 100% conversion rate, showing promise in only her second match.

Woodville Warriors v Sturt Sabres, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at St Clair
Sturt 60 (Caroline Burgess, Brooke Sidebottom, Conor Holmes 10) defeated
Woodville 50 (Katherine Perkas 12, Claire Christie 11, Ashleigh White 8)

In a low scoring first quarter little separated the sides at the first break, the Sabres in control 12-9. Both sides found it difficult to buy a basket, scores level 5-5 after 5:17 of play had elapsed. In the second quarter the Sabres edged away mainly due to the efforts of Hannah Richards and Kara Hargreaves on the scoreboard. Woodville had their best quarter in the third when they piled on 26 points whilst holding Sturt to just 12 points. Early in the term Woodville fell behind by as much as 10 points before leading by 5 points at the three quarter time break after Ashleigh White scored with 5 seconds left in the period. In the third,Ingrid Richards and Katherine Perkas scored 13 points between them with Claire Christie hitting two 3s to create the lead. In the last, opening baskets to Conor Holmes and Monique Bowley reduced the margin when they both scored and Sturt regained the lead 51 – 46 with 2:41 left to play. By then, Woodville had both Brooke Gathercole and Katherine Pekas fouled out and with time running out they were forced to foul to stop the clock. In the last minute Sabres Caroline Burgess hit 6 from 6 from the foul line to create the final margin.

Eastern Mavericks v Forestville Eagles, Sun, June 27th, 1.15pm at Mount Barker
Forestville 75 ( Mia Newley 25, Jess Fergus 21, Jessica Mahony 14) defeated
Eastern 69 (Tess Madgen 25, Cody Lange 15, Alex Wilson 8)

Eastern started well in the first half when they led midway through the second quarter 30-20. The margin was established with good outside shooting from Tess Madgen, Jamie Fricker and Cody Lange. With both sides desperate for victory (Forestville chasing top spot by the end of the season and Eastern looking to grab a finals berth) it was a tough and tight contest. The class of WNBL players Mia Newley for the Eagles and Tess Madgen for the Mavericks shone through, and they both finished with a double – double, Newley with 25 points and 15 rebounds and Madgen with 25 points and 11 rebounds. At the end of the contest the difference beween the two sides was the additional scoring options that Eagles guards Jess Fergus and Jess Mahony were able to provide.
