Women's Game Reviews - Round 12

Woodville Warriors v South Adelaide Panthers, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at St Clair
In a game of contrasting halves, South Adelaide won the first half 39 – 30, while Woodville won the second half 37 – 20 on their way to recording their 4th win of the season. The Warriors’ win inflicted the 3rd straight loss on the Panthers. Early in the contest the sides were evenly matched with South slipping away towards the end of the first quarter after Claire Johnson and Ursula Richards hit from outside. Both sides traded baskets in the 2nd quarter, and South finished the quarter with 8 individual scorers while Woodville finished with 7. By the end of the third period Woodville had closed to within 3 points, 49 – 46, with South struggling to find a consistent avenue for scoring. In the last, opening baskets to Claire Christie and Katherine Perkas put Woodville in front for the first time since early in the first quarter. Woodville set up a mini break halfway through the last quarter, then Christie and April Brown both struck, knocking down 3s to set up a match-winning break with less than 2 minutes of play remaining. Warriors guard Alissa Hampton finished with 11 points, her highest score of the season, to help her side to a second half revival and victory.

North Adelaide Rockets v Forestville Eagles, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Hillcrest
The loss by the North Adelaide Rockets dropped them out of the top 5 after Southern defeated Eastern. Forestville did the damage early when they established a break to lead 31 – 12 at the end of the first quarter - three pointers from Eagles Jessica Mahony and Alex Duncan in the last minute of play not aiding the Rockets cause. By the end of the 2nd period, Forestville extended the margin further to 20 points and at half time they led 46 -26.  A pair of 3 pointers to North’s Shannon McKay kept the margin from blowing out further. In the third North rallied against the trend of play, at one stage piling on 14 unanswered points. The run was led by Jo Hill who compiled 8 points for the quarter and at three quarter time only 3 points separated the sides. North’s recovery in the third evaporated in the last as Eagles guards Jess Fergus and Jessica Mahony did the majority of the scoring. North were unable to mount a challenge and Forestville cleared out in the last 6 minutes winning by 13 points.

Southern Tigers v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Morphett Vale
The Southern Tigers set up their 5th victory in a row late in the first quarter and in the early minutes of the second term when they outscored Eastern 25 – 7. In that 10 minute period of the game they set up what turned out to be a match winning break, leading at halftime 43 – 25. Tigers Stephanie Gates and Robyn Jennings were the leading scorers in the first half with 10 points each. Eastern had an off shooting night and by the end of the game the team had taken 97 shots but converted only 21 of those at 22%. In contrast the Tigers fired off 73 shots on the night but connected on 32, a conversion rate of 44%. The Tigers finished with 5 players in double figures led by the trio of Madelaine Cunningham, Gates and Jennings who all finished on 16 points. Tess Madgen for Eastern played a lone hand, finishing the game high scorer with 25 points, and there were no other players from Eastern in double figures. The victory by Southern lifted them into 5th place at the expense of North Adelaide who lost.

Norwood Flames v Sturt Sabres, Sat, June 19th, 6.30pm at Mars
Sturt ended Norwood’s 5 game winning run when they defeated them 61 - 48 in a hard fought encounter. Norwood was hampered by the absence of Rebecca Duke who is averaging 11.7ppg and the injury to Jess Foley (21.0ppg) which happened in the first minute (she took no further part in the game). Only 4 points separated the sides at halftime with Sturt in front mainly due to the efforts of Monique Bowley who scored 12 points in this period in a low scoring encounter. There were no other players from either side who were in double figures. Both sides struggled offensively in the 3rd but by the midpoint of the term the Sabres had set up a 13 point margin after a basket to Caroline Burgess. Norwood closed the margin to just 4 points at the last break after Jordan Walker-Roberts, Cara Boothey and Lisa Ackroyd scored. In the last quarter Katrina Fitzpatrick was the surprise packet hitting two 3 pointers and another basket, and her output helped edge the Sabres back in front after the Flames had momentarily taken the lead 42 – 41. In the remaining 5 minutes Sturt scored 20 points to 6  to establish the winning margin of 13, 61 - 48.
